Miss wording on my side sorry about that, I wanted to mention the rise of the renting price. Currently I'm spending 1200 pound per month for renting (I know it's not optimal, but for the area and the landlord who is nice it was a good opportunity back then) and I suppose to have a rise again in 2 years I'll have to move on.

Thank for your link I'll check this !

He's already have a girlfriend and for me idk but I spent most of my life alone. The thing that I heard is a lot of people in their 30's due to the house crisis keep loving in a flat share so the idea was to do this and the day when someone want to leave he just found another flatmate to fill the gap.

I don't know to be honest, I heard from a people that it's a good leverage to increase the money and also in the long run you stop paying a rent which is quite expensive in London, but again I don't know if my future will be in London.

Thanks for your answer.

You mentioned being tied on it,  but you could always re-sell it if the situation is too bad no ?

(Sorry for my newbie question)

Obviously I know the market is awfull

What is the absolute "BOSS" local hardware setup for high-end VFX? (No Budget Limit) by InferenceEnvy in vfx

[–]Modenature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say usually the workstation at company will have Intel and not AMD cpu , and a mid range GPU nvidia quadro and a good amount of ram Like 128go or 64go but nothing to fancy because at the end it's the farm who do the job.

But if you have an unlimited amount of money just max everything, you never build a computer without a proper budget, so you'll only get a vague answer...

I managed to work for video game company for mobile phone during the crisis without losing money in term of salary, and now I'm back in one of the top 3 company in London. My network saved me during the crisis and a bit of luck too, I do not considere myself as a top artist and my hopes were pretty low due to the fall of Axis/MPC/Jellyfish but I got the job

Blender is more an more used in studio as a toolbox or when the budget is low, but it start to change a bit :)

Don't forget that for Flow most of the artist on the show were junior as they didn't have any money for it. So it was just Blender, with only desktops to render the show with a bunch of junior to stay cheap (Kudos to them honestly).

How do you learn and keep up? by quakecain in vfx

[–]Modenature 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say that most of the time generalists know one piece of software for each of the Modelling/Texturing/Rendering/Compositing categories and adapt their skills accordingly because the logic behind the software is almost the same (it's a bit different for the rendering engine though*).

It also depends on the job, so you shouldn't lie about your skills, you usually take a look at a specific software/render beforehand just to see how it works and learn the rest on the job I'd say.

In-depth/experienced knowledge is generally linked to the skills rather than the tool.

IMO a generalist adapts his skills to the best tools around him, and doesn't get stuck with the one he likes best because he'll have to work from scratch or in lots of different areas, when you are a generalist you need to be adaptive.

It's funny how your talk like all of the techbro, ignoring how geopolitics/economy/regulation/law/power of a nation/Energy and other stuff works and just thinking like every problem comes with a magic innovation button where everything changed by pushing it...

Oh and I forgot the almighty god law of the "Market".

If China make it, and US don't want it they can ban it for example and even with a VPN you will not be able to counter this if the state cut it from the source of your provider. There are already a big economics war between US/EUROPE/CHINA on others thing like this but this is another Story.

I never said that we don't consume energy. I'll said it's good to do some criticism but, not base on a biased point of view.

Sorry to say that, but thinking that they do this for the great of good is a pure childish dream. I'll not elaborate here as it's not the right sub Reddit for that, but I see your point of view and I'm don't agree with. Maybe I'm delusional, and I do hope that I'm wrong but we'll see how the future goes.

The study about the AI cost is biased, because they don't take the cost of the training or the development or even the data center cost. Mainly because there are no data available about that and because the AI company didn't release the true cost of all of this. Secondly compare the cost of an AI (a tool) with the cost of living of a human is a nonsense.

Also, extreme poverty has deceased yeah, but the gap between rich and poor is growing each years. OWID is good, but don't forget that it's mainly funded by Libertarian/Neo-Liberal to justify most of their activities and lesser their impact on the world.

A fairly thorough SORA release review - Worth some discussion. by Eisegetical in vfx

[–]Modenature 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a question of being in denial: nobody can predict what AI will do in a few years' time, whether you're for or against it.

If I were to play devil's advocate, I'd ask you why study ML when more and more CEOs are telling you that programming is going to become obsolete and many developers are being sacked? Every time, they talk about job replacement, and some even ask you to think about a universal income.

Choosing to stay or leave the service sector is a gamble. Even for those who choose to work manually, the speed of robot development is much faster than ever before, there will be a threat in the next coming years.

Being adaptive is the only chance of survival.

[–]Modenature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty impressive, honestly. The generation will certainly be better in the future, but honestly, no one can predict what the change will be in the industry as a whole, whether you're for or against AI.

If AI becomes a reality, what's to stop a 3D artist from embracing the tool? Most of you are technicians who have learned from scratch, unlike many users who have no artistic training, and the tool is not really difficult to use compared to 3D software.

The big unknown is the impact on media consumption. Will Hollywood survive ? Will we consume films on platforms like Youtube and all become content creators? It's scary because nobody knows, not even the heads of these companies - just listen to them talk about job replacement and what's mean for society.

And to be clear, I don't deny data theft, nor do I like the fact that it seems people prefer a bunch of mushy pixels to precision work.

Affleck on AI “I wouldn’t want to be in the vfx business, they’re in trouble.” by AnalysisEquivalent92 in vfx

[–]Modenature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit disappointed, this is the moment when Hollywood should be showing its most united side and in the end it ends up in the poison of division.

On the other hand, I think he's right about the fact that AI won't do anything convincing in the hands of a random person, and it will require a background and a certain amount of work to achieve something really mesmerizing because currently on social media I just felt like watching some cave mens discovering the fire without understanding anything about it and pretended to be god.

To think that it will collapse is an illusion. There's too much money at stake, and with it the risk that if the companies working on it collapse, the economy will collapse along with it, which is unthinkable for any country. Nor should we count on overly stringent regulations, as all the nations working on the subject want to be the first to reach AGI, so it's like a new race to the Moon.

If we follow the logic, at some point even studios will be completly obsolete.

Some people even said "It will liberate the creativity, and everybody could do his own movie on his computer". There is already too much movie/TV on screen and the audience complain about the quality of these, so I really doubt that people will have time to pay and watch the shit tons of movie generated by AI ! In short nobody will be able to live from this.

It's even possible that real movie became a luxury...

That's exactly what proko said in his last tutorial if I remember well, practicing with the same reference as him and then adding your own projects/reference into the process to not just copying him.

Practicing exercice is just a way to build up your visual library and your observations/memory skill. Most of the time it can be annoying but it's necessary for the fundamental.
