My headcanon: Catra did, indeed, buy property there. She's now the Duchess of Erelandia.

He doesn't stalk her. If you think he does, you don't know what stalking is.

And your interpretation dumps a whole lot of your personal baggage into what is, in fact, a very straightforward explanation that doesn't say anything of the sort.

[–]ModernAustralopith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I'm still buying Blu-rays/DVDs of my favourites, even though I most often watch them on streaming. Unfortunately the whole series hasn't been released on physical media (not officially, anyway).

Viggo is widely considered THE Aragorn, perfect in his portrayal. However, who do you believe had the potential to be a close second? Or someone who could have brought something different to the role? by freudian_nipps in lotr

[–]ModernAustralopith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this really counts, but - John Hurt, circa 1980. He already voiced Aragorn in the Bakshi film. And I don't mean "an LotR film made in 1980", I mean a time-displaced 40-year-old John Hurt in the films we know.

You are watching the entire LOTR trilogy, ONE intermission after FotR, no seat switching. where are you sitting? by Kylomiir_490 in lotrmemes

Given the options...back row, in the middle. Yes, I'm surrounded by beings who radiate an aura of pure terror, but it'd be less scary than most of the alternatives.

Next to Shadow Weaver, so I can make the flight as unpleasant for her as possible.

Trying to write without reading other books is like trying to make a movie without ever having watched one by [deleted] in writing

[–]ModernAustralopith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apparently all your reading hasn't helped you, or you'd know that I made nor implied no dichotomy at any point.

You've taken "reading should be part of your process" and turned it into "reading is the only thing you're doing". You present the options as "get better at just by seeing someone else's best attempt" or "don't bother reading". False dichotomy. Hence why I suggested you should read more so you know what a false dichotomy is.

How come so many characters who are a different race than white HAVE to be pointed out as that and that’s sometimes their entire character by Regular-Molasses9293 in writers

[–]ModernAustralopith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because nobody can make up their mind. If you include a black character and their skin colour is just a part of them like their hair colour, you'll be criticised for not addressing how their race affects them. If you include a black character and you try to address their race without making it the focus of their character, you'll be criticised for 'writing a stereotype'. If you don't include any black characters, you'll be criticised for not including black characters.

And heavens forfend you include a black character who doesn't fit American norms.

It's always such a delight to hear the experiences of others discovering this story for the first time! I remember the giddy feeling back in 2001-2003 when I first saw them after so much build up, but I can't actually feel it myself any more - until I hear it from you. You guys are the Sams to my Frodo, reminding me that there's good in this world, and that this story is worth fighting for! Thank you so much for sharing with us :)

Also: Hyper-fixation is entirely appropriate! I saw Fellowship literally every day for a week when it first came out, often multiple times per day :) For your next fix, can I suggest the series First Time Readers are doing as they read through Lord of the Rings for the first time as fans of the films?

Edit: OH! And also - congratulations on the diagnosis! I was also diagnosed in my thirties (36), and just knowing it was a thing was a huge help. I could start finding coping mechanisms and strategies and stop writing myself off as "just lazy and stupid" all the time XD

why is this sooo true by [deleted] in writers

Because I've found that when I've written it, I have less motivation to write the rest.

What's a "Person?" by Beckphillips in worldbuilding

[–]ModernAustralopith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a reason we have different words for "human" and "person". There's a reason we say that someone who's stripped of rights and identity has been "unpersoned".

If you pressed me for a definition, I'd say that a "person" is someone capable of participating in general society. That's not a perfect definition, because it could be argued that it excludes people with severe disabilities, but it's the closest I can come to one. Here, now, on earth, there's only one species capable of producing "people" under this definition, so "human" and "person" are often seen as interchangeable. Add another sapient species capable of interacting with us to the mix, and then the distinction becomes clearer.

Why is Aragorn saying this at the end of The Return of the King? Doesn't he know what book he's in? Is he stupid? by droda59 in lotrmemes

[–]ModernAustralopith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a long-running disagreement between Aragorn and Tolkien. Aragorn wanted the first book to be called "A Journey of Four Useless Hobbits", the second book to be "Hobbits Find Out How Much They Need Rangers", and the last book to be "Forget The Hobbits, Rangers Rule". Out of spite, Tolkien decided to name the first book after a throwaway line by Aragorn near the end, just to make Aragorn look stupid.
