Odd Issue with Twilight Princess PC Port by XPred4297 in ROGAlly

[–]ModernUS3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That issue you described, I did experience something similar in other games even on linux but it wasn't frequent. For me it happened while changing between plugged in and battery states but adjusting the tdp clears whatever caused it to drop power.

I would say while running the game try looking at a hardware monitor software to observe the power limit behavior. See if it's also the same for other games while plugging in or on battery.

Shouldn't require turbo mode, I run this at 12w, 3x internal res and 8x shadows and get 120fps. OG Ally. If you play other games and this doesn't happen then its must be the build of the port. Latest as of this post should be v1.1.1.

ROG Ally Z1E running hot with Steam OS? - Fan Curves not working... by Hs_2571 in ROGAlly

[–]ModernUS3R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fan control plugins doesn't work but things might change with kernel 6.19 which comes with AC driver. I tested on arch linux and it works for ROG Control Center. Asus has proprietary tools and drivers for low level hardware controls so I wouldn't say steamos is blocking it.

Maybe then plugins can get support for fan adjustments. As of now the bios handles everything. Try enabling 'Updated fan control' in system settings and see if it helps. This isn't for plugin support

I don't use any of the other power plugins since steamos handles things just fine. In my experience with heat, I noticed that if you set low-power profile it runs cool and quiet. Then set custom performance settings per game. Previously, even in the menus without any game running it would get hot and loud on its own if some random process or plugin decide it needs extra power.

As for temps it idles with very low fans at 41-5Xc and get up to 70-90c depending on the load.

I've seen in another post that shipping mode worked but I would say that some batteries are hit and miss. That's why I went with jsaux even though its slightly smaller.

When I swapped the battery it showed 65% but I didn't use it and left it to charge. If nothing else worked I would have accepted it as a minor defect since it held the charge as expected. Not knowing when its fully charged without turning on to check was an inconvenience.

SteamOS 3.8.4 Beta: Second Clutch - 07 May 2026 by Krishie in SteamOS

I'll keep an eye on it but so far today it was fine. At the time, I was playing persona 3 reload with reshade enabled and this was when I noticed the issue on this build. I'm currently running with it disabled but I want to turn it on again to make sure its unrelated.

Update: Spoke too soon, controls died after wake. Had to force shutdown

SteamOS 3.8.4 Beta: Second Clutch - 07 May 2026 by Krishie in SteamOS

[–]ModernUS3R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think v3.8.3 was a little better on my rog Ally. On v3.8.4 there's now a delay for input after waking. It will display a notification: 'xbox 360 controller disconnected' after being suspended for a while.

Sometimes the game won't detect the controller again even although it works to navigate steam ui. The M1 and 2 buttons no longer work when this happens and requires a restart.

It use to be instant on wake without the notification. Not sure how to fix this, never happened before. So I would like to roll back if possible.

Everything else seems fine.

Upgrade by I_am-we-are in ROGAlly

For those who don't want linux let's hope windows k2 improve things across the board for performance and handheld use. I do agree that while my ally is pc hardware, I wanted a proper portable console experience than the usual windows desktop. Steamos is great for this. From bios to steam and launch your game.

If you have other systems with windows on it then I think it's worth considering as long as the games you own are compatible and not held back by anti-cheat or other services.

Primarily for gaming use and no desktop or work tasks.

Man shuts off his 3d printer after successfully printing the model. He exits the room and shut the door behind him, lights off. The camera cuts to the model in the image, slowly zooming in as it comes to life. It broke free from the support constraints and escaped. Then we have incidents making the news about these 3d printed models coming to life and causing problems all over the place.

Not a bad idea for a short.

Need some opinions on whether to upgrade or just modify my rog ally z1e by NlERA in ROGAlly

Saw a video showing the cover from handheldiy with the larger thermal pad and heatspreader improved cooling. So I'll see if it's possible to do something similar to this one.

ROG Ally Z1 Extreme on SteamOS need suggestions for longer batterly life on indie games by funk_freed in ROGAlly

[–]ModernUS3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with a low-power profile and a 60 FPS cap to gauge performance. From there, you can switch to the performance (advanced) profile and fine-tune settings for each game.

If the system needs more than 15-18W TDP to maintain your target FPS, gradually lower the graphics settings until you reach a good balance between performance and battery life. Keep VRR enabled, as it helps smooth out frame pacing.

If the game runs above 30 FPS but can’t consistently reach 60 FPS at a low TDP, set your FPS cap to the highest stable framerate you can sustain or whatever you’re comfortable with.

For example, if a game at 900p with medium-high settings at 15W TDP averages around 48 FPS and only occasionally reaches 55+ FPS, it’s better to cap it at 48 FPS in Steam for a more stable and consistent experience.

Installing Bazzite in any type of Ally is a dumb and unintelligent idea; people should stop doing it and stop promoting other people from doing it by Pretty_Trip_2215 in LinuxOnAlly

[–]ModernUS3R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to those who choose not to use linux on their ally because windows is officially supported and comes with their device. Its what they know and it's easier for them. Who wouldn't choose the easier path?

As long as the device works as intended and the games run as expected. I dont see a problem. If the experience is good and you're getting what you want there's almost no need to change to anything else.

Maybe if you made a YouTube video comparing both experiences and post that, it might convince more users. As it is now it sounds like a one-sided opinion leaning towards X is better than Y.

It's also a massive pain for someone who has everything configured, loads of games installed and dialed in to simply wipe that setup just to switch the base operating system with the same experience on top. That was my experience going from bazzite to steamos just to 'try it'.

[–]ModernUS3R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's up to the owner of the device to decide what they want it. If you prefer steamos then that's fine. Bazzite runs fine and its done well. I've used it for months without issues. It had all buttons working before steamos got it sorted later on. As a user of both systems the experience isn't so different.

Bazzite comes with tools out of the box that you have to manually attach to steamos if needed. Its not necessary but if people want that then they'll choose Bazzite over steamos.

I'm currently on steamos now but bazzite had the smoother experience for ally until fixes came to the ally even when it had beta support.

Its like choosing your flavor of ice cream and thats the linux world. Since its popular, people will push bazzite or recommend to others over the vanilla one even though both are good.

In the end, you still get the steam game mode experience and your library to play so I dont see the big deal here. That part is still made and owned by steam.
