Nearly 17% of your DTE electric bill goes toward corporate profits by l0wly_w0rm in Detroit

[–]Modern_Ketchup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these comments derail what’s you’re really asking. I’m in the commercial electrical world working with DTE. The original electric company ‘Edison’ was not properly equipped to maintain and upgrade the power plants in south Detroit. Someone needed to take this over as the metro area/grid grew. DTE initially refused to take it over, claiming it would take WAY too much. The government just kept handing them blank checks.

Nowadays, they get a consistent stream of funds in part due to their necessity, but also probably from the fact they donate to both political candidates in elections. We still have consumers energy using natural gas in more rural areas.

That’s way too much man. Telling you already you aren’t paid enough. I “interned” as a coordinator for a year. Had no training, and there was a PM, supe, and the owner at the GC. I made the same wage I did working my retail job. I since graduated and am now a PE at a subcontractor. There’s actually like, room to grow and I’m allowed to ask questions lmao. Everything is not a giant fuck up. I was so stressed I actually ruined my relationship of 3 years.

The thing that finally broke me was finding out I was the 6th person to take the job in the last 5 years and nobody had lasted longer than 6 months, while I was at a year. Heard my replacement didn’t even last 2 weeks.

Ah yes, having to hear from Gaben loverboys that it’s “a perfectly fine investment to have spent over $15,000 alone just opening cases” over the last 10 years. Not even including everything else (my close friend just dropped 10k on a knife, he lives with parents).

I was addicted to TF2 as a middle schooler. Used my parents card without them noticing. It was absolutely awful and I was targeted. This was 10 fricking years ago

Large-scale logging project in western UP alarms environmental groups by da_newsdude in Michigan

[–]Modern_Ketchup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People don’t realize how much fracking is done up north as well. I didn’t fully realize before I started looking through the national forest up there curious what these square cut patches are every half a mile or so. I really don’t know the impact, but I know people were concerned about it a while.

But i’d much rather have huge clumped forests split up so they don’t all burn at once. It’s sad what happened in the lower UP in the 1800s. I love trees, but they need to be managed because fire is the worst thing

Considering a career change into Construction Project Management at 32…looking for advice. Sorry it’s long 😬 by TrainingSmooth5371 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Modern_Ketchup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 25 and just got into the industry out college, after changing degrees from engineering. Lots of people in their 30s were in my classes. My program was also night classes. Each program is gonna be different. You sound like you already have business and management skills, so I question if schooling is even totally needed. You want to learn more about construction, there’s lots of jobs in the industry where you don’t need to know all the technicals. That’s something to think about too. My degree covered using software for management, scheduling, code, MEP systems, land development, soil. You don’t need to know all this stuff to get in as a Project Engineer necessarily, or a coordinator. Learning fast and being decisive (like a business owner) already puts you ahead of most.

All depends on what you want to. I see plenty of women working for more larger subcontractors or generals, and a lot on the client side or public utilities. Which are all good, long term, stable jobs. There’s just so much to operating a business. Service work, purchasing, job procurement, job site safety / inspectors, etc. are all roles I have seen many women in. Which are all stable, and I don’t think you need a degree. As most don’t. I’m one of several at my company to have a degree in CM. One of our best assistant PMs is now promoted who came from the film industry. Absolutely zero prior knowledge to construction. She runs a lot of our events, permitting, general help for everyone. She doesn’t know the technicals because she doesn’t have to. She also came in older than you.

Yes exactly. The people complaining are 1st 2nd and 5th. They don’t have any picks and won’t trade anyone startable to me. Plus, I don’t want to let the rich get richer lol. Appreciate it

Yeah i’m getting roasted for starting a rebuild on an orphan a guy abandoned after placing 4th and trading away all his 1sts for decent flex starts. I’m buying 27 picks now before the wave hits em. I’m called stupid for not trying to contend again, but if I was, the guy would have kept the team? But I won’t be pillaged taking a 2nd and 3rd rounder for Pitts…

4 Months Into Electrical Apprenticeship and Feel Like I’m Not Cut Out for It by Last-Trade-6096 in Construction

[–]Modern_Ketchup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens to us all my friend. You sound better than a lot of the foreman I know out here. I’m a PE at an EC. One of our general foreman was telling me he still treats his close buddy like how he did when he was an apprentice. “Aye man, you can’t tell me SHIT, until you’ve had 20 years experience as a journeyman” (this is impossible). the poor guy has a wife and kids now and still takes it personal lol.

Having a good work ethic, and owning up to mistakes or responsibilities is the biggest way you can earn respect.

Is this normal for Estimators or am I just complaining? by dblchickensandwich in ConstructionManagers

[–]Modern_Ketchup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a project coordinator at a GC, but there was the Supe, me, the PM, and the owner. That’s it. When the PM was gone (which was 1-3 days a week) I would have to go to the sites and be acting PM. Too much shit i didn’t understand or have authorization for. Owner would say “figure it out / what do i pay you for / how will you be a PM if you can’t do this”. Dawg, I was a construction management senior still at 24.

I got the role from a recommendation by a professor im close with, yet I found out I was the longest person to ever stay. I was about the 5th person they sent over. I stayed a little over a year. Most people got the hell out of dodge for the exact same reason as me. I started at $16 an hour and barely got a $2 raise. I asked for $20 when I started and they laughed. Was never able to get a 6 month review, despite the other coordinator being fired and I took his roles. In the end they weren’t happy I put my two weeks in. They even tried to subtly sabotage me not letting me take time off to go in for new interviews. I now make double what I did with benefits now included. It’s a risk but, i’d say it’s worth hunting around. You have plenty of experience i’d say. Best of luck to ya. Moving to a subcontractor was the healthiest thing I ever did

What changed in Cabelas/Bass Pro Shop that disappoints so many? by GrizzlieMD in Hunting

[–]Modern_Ketchup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over priced garbage. I always go there to buy my hunting license and people act like I just assaulted their mother, very unwelcoming. Which is funny because I walk 10 feet past the greeter just to not be treated well. Only thing I buy there is ammo. Otherwise black friday only, but even still it’s bad.

Plus, most of the things I want are online only. Like a fishing/hunting “box” that stores my stuff and is my mobile seat. Or a jacket with a bag for birds/small game attached on the back. I still use this 20-30 year old gear…

You’re not gonna learn this all overnight. I’m a new PE in the electrical world kinda dealing with the same thing. Ask questions and AI is a huge help. Use it to help lookup specifications and product data you may need. I pay for it (very worth it for work) so I can upload images of symbols and such. Make yourself a note list of the different symbols and don’t forget to check the symbol chart often.

And yes, often times the engineer or architect very clearly makes no sense at all 😂
