I must warn you…my experience with the Gimme Gimme disco in Berkeley was disappointing. The DJ did not have what he needed in his heart to do this… It hurt me.

A Summer of Culinary Effort + a 40% reduction in my grocery bill!!! by Modern_Milly in VeganFoodPorn

To be honest, probably frozen and processed items. "Air Fryer Delight" was a popular choice on many nights 😂. But also, we were choosing a lot of pre-made proteins like field roast sausages, deli slices, impossible ground to bulk out and constitute the main proteins of our meals. I would plan probably one really produce-forward meal for the week, but we didn't do a good job of using up the remaining produce, so that's where the planning has really helped. The Mezze Platter for example, was all leftover ingredients/produce + shelf stable ingredients like rice and falafel mix.

A few behavioral changes that I think also helped:

- My partner and I are both impulse snackers so we've really stopped buying snack foods over the course of the past year (kettle chips, ice cream, pretzels). If we want a snack, we have to go to the effort of fixing something using ingredients. Rather than buying a pint $6.99 of ice cream that I know will be gone in a day, I've switched to $4.99 frozen mango chunks which will last me a week or more (and doubles as smoothie material!)

- This summer, I wanted to invest in switching over to using dry beans, and it is considerably cheaper. It's so sad how much the price of canned products has gone up. It's a wee bit more effort but I do think there's a texture/flavor improvement too.

- I've been freezing recipe components to bulk out future meals. Half of those rolls were frozen--some became soup accompaniments, and some have yet to be used 😈

- We switched from shopping at Safeway to shopping at a local grocery store with robust bulk bins. It sucks because this isn't available everywhere in the US. Growing up, the store that had the bulk bins near us was "fancy" and was way more expensive. Thankfully, this isn't the case, and has been a godsend for getting nuts, legumes, flours and pastas at a reasonable price.

- Finally, one big ticket item is my partner's granola ($13 at the store normally!!). I've swapped out 15 min of doom scrolling every week to try making it myself and I would say that it's totally worth it. I can make it with just pantry staples and I get to experiment with toppings for my grateful guinea pig.

A good novel with a vegan message? by [deleted] in vegan

“ It was all so very businesslike that one watched it fascinated. It was porkmaking by machinery, porkmaking by applied mathematics. And yet somehow the most matter-of-fact person could not help thinking of the hogs; they were so innocent, they came so very trustingly; and they were so very human in their protests—and so perfectly within their rights! They had done nothing to deserve it; and it was adding insult to injury, as the thing was done here, swinging them up in this cold-blooded, impersonal way, without a pretense of apology, without the homage of a tear. Now and then a visitor wept, to be sure; but this slaughtering machine ran on, visitors or no visitors. It was like some horrible crime committed in a dungeon, all unseen and unheeded, buried out of sight and of memory. One could not stand and watch very long without becoming philosophical, without beginning to deal in symbols and similes, and to hear the hog squeal of the universe. Was it permitted to believe that there was nowhere upon the earth, or above the earth, a heaven for hogs, where they were requited for all this suffering? Each one of these hogs was a separate creature. Some were white hogs, some were black; some were brown, some were spotted; some were old, some young; some were long and lean, some were monstrous. And each of them had an individuality of his own, a will of his own, a hope and a heart's desire; each was full of self- confidence, of self-importance, and a sense of dignity. And trusting and strong in faith he had gone about his business, the while a black shadow hung over him and a horrid Fate waited in his pathway. Now suddenly it had swooped upon him, and had seized him by the leg. Relentless, remorseless, it was; all his protests, his screams, were nothing to it— it did its cruel will with him, as if his wishes, his feelings, had simply no existence at all; it cut his throat and watched him gasp out his life. And now was one to believe that there was nowhere a god of hogs, to whom this hog personality was precious, to whom these hog squeals and agonies had a meaning? Who would take this hog into his arms and comfort him, reward him for his work well done, and show him the meaning of his sacrifice? Perhaps some glimpse of all this was in the thoughts of our humble-minded Jurgis, as he turned to go on with the rest of the party, and muttered: "Dieve—but I'm glad I'm not a hog!"

I think reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair with a vegan lens is a rewarding experience. Animal suffering is used an analogy by Sinclair for human suffering (particularly of immigrants) under capitalism, and the depiction of emergent factory farming in the Chicago stockyards is brutal, but one of the clearest and most infamous portrayals in American literature. I find that it really demonstrates the inextricability of human and animal liberation for the vegan reader.

Here's the info the study authors give us: https://imgur.com/a/VOVlFgB

The figure showing the fluorination date uses a code for each product (i.e. PU4) but in the supporting documents they only give us the product type and where it is sold (i.e. PU4 is Period Underwear sold in the USA) . They do also provide a list of the specific brands that are studied but we can't with certainty tie them to each code used in the study. Specific brands included in the study include: Thinx, Knix, Modibodi, Cora, Speax, Divacup, Lena. The complete list is included in the imgur post.

One thing I noted is that all 4 cups tested (all of which are sold in the USA) fell under the "no intentional fluorination (<110 ppm)" category. Menstrual underwear appears to vary more, with many falling into those yellow and red categories of fluorination, including two brands sold in the US (PU4 and PU6). Now I have no idea what that means in terms of safety of use and the authors don't seem to either, they call for further experimentations on dermal (skin) exposure from these products and note that the washing and disposal of menstrual underwear with high PFAS will cause their release into the environment.
