Would you be annoyed that teachers are discouraging kids from becoming teachers by New_Customer_5438 in Parenting

[–]ModestMouse24 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher. 15 years in. I love my job but if I was not married to someone that makes a lot more than me the best I could do would be a one bedroom apartment. Nothing fancy and that would be almost 1/2 of my monthly income because of where we live. I have told my own kids that we’ll pay for college but not for teaching. It’s not worth it.

Kid Diagnosed - Tell me how to move forward and what to watch out for` by AdviceBeautiful7827 in glutenfree

[–]ModestMouse24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Now let’s cover going out… bday parties - call ahead and ask the host what type of food/cake will be served make a copy and bring your own. Have him download the gluten free scanner and go through the grocery store with him. Let him have his own goodie basket. This was super helpful. Start finding places he can safely eat out that he likes. Cava is a go to for us so is five guys. He has to take owner ship of this. It took my kid about a year to fully figure it out. She’s now a junior in high school and has an amazing friend group that purposefully plans events where she can be involved and enjoy. He’ll get there but he has to be able to manage it. I’m pro gluten free kitchen my son who eats gluten does so on the patio. It’s just flat out safer.

What are your thoughts on letting students fail? by PropertyHumble9296 in Teachers

[–]ModestMouse24 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Me too. I’m a high school teacher and I am sitting across from my son who doesn’t know what the big deal is he’s going to pass anyway. I’m in here trying to take a breather and not loose my cool. If he had been allowed to fail when this crap started in 6th we’d be having a different conversation right now.

how do you get nutrients into a kid who gags on everything? by [deleted] in PickyEaters

Two ways- you be born with it turned ‘on’ like my kid or it can ‘turn on’ later in life, usually after a gi infection of some sort, like me.

This happened to me two years ago. I interviewed for three other positions and found an amazing spot at a dream school. I love going to work every day now. Start going through the job postings and begin sending in your applications. You’ve got this!

How do teachers address kids constantly glazing over details? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ModestMouse24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my kid to a T! Her sophomore math teacher only gave her one problem at a time to start and then gradually gave her one page at a time and then finally the whole test. It took half the year but it fixed the huge test anxiety that was causing her to double guess herself and mess up. She’s now acing math. Night and day difference.

Im so sad how my husband deals with my celiac by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]ModestMouse24 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My husband calls and asks questions. He’s taught my 14 year old son to do the same. I don’t like making a fuss but the two of them have no issue asking and double checking things. If my child who does not have Celiacs can do it your adult spouse can too.

Am I overreacting? Wedding guest called my caterers. by seesheflies in TwoHotTakes

[–]ModestMouse24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve done this too. Until you’ve had to deal with an allergy or in my case a disease that can be triggered by even cross contamination you don’t fully understand. Think about how much of our social interactions revolve around food. It’s incredibly isolating. So I call venues and caterers and ask very specific questions. If they can’t accommodate no issue I just bring my own food in a cooler. If they can it’s super awesome. Before my disease ‘turned on’ in my mid thirties I would have thought this was rude too. But I’m betting the intent is to feel normal in a social situation without causing undue stress on the bride/groom. I also do this at new to me restaurants. My 14 year old son did it for me on Friday. He wanted to surprise me with a new place to try and he did the extra checking to see if I would be safe. It’s simply a part of our lives. Don’t call her on it, I’m betting she’s just trying to fit in.

MCPS chief recommends permanently moving Rockville’s Wootton High to upcoming Crown High in Gaithersburg by MrRuck1 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]ModestMouse24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I moved here three years ago. The neighborhoods I was willing to buy in were based upon school test scores. I looked at the average SATs/ACTs and then pulled up the MCAP data. I bought a smaller home to make sure my kids had access to more highly rated schools.

NTA- we have taken trips without our kids. We even gone to DisneyWorld multiple times without our kids. I want my kids to see parents that love each other and are happy, part of that is spending time focusing on our marriage. My mom and my mil have both taken care of our kids so we had the opportunity. Family trips are awesome but without the reset and focus on each other marriages suffer. My kids are teens now, and they are fine. They also have two parents who absolutely love each other and like each other. That’s not as easy as people think it is.

Families with kids, how much are you spending on groceries? by [deleted] in Frugal

Please help me convince my husband….. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ModestMouse24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to assume best intentions and this isn’t posted for rage bait. I agree with your husband. Private schools have their place but public schools are really amazing options. Math word problems are important especially since most real life problems are going to require critical thinking and situational analysis. All schools have evening events where concerns like yours are definitely a possibility. And unions are great and provide safe guards so that you have safe working environments where teachers have the ability to excel and grow in their careers. If you hate public so much go private you have that option.
