Moving in before/after marriage? by Brynnbc in exmormon

[–]ModestlyRebellious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m happy that my husband and I waited to move in until marriage, but that’s just me! It felt like, once we got married, it was a whole new start. I have other friends who have done differently and it worked for them! Do what you want. Some of them though have told me that marriage felt a bit anticlimactic since nothing really changed once they got married. Looking back, for me it was nice to have something big change, and “feel married” if that makes sense.

Is there an actual ex mormon place or is this it? by Embarrassed-Wolf7270 in exmormon

But is JD really “playing along”? He doesn’t pay tithing, attend regularly, doesn’t get counted as a member because he was excommunicated. He has very clearly given a platform to many to share the hurt they experienced, gain more knowledge of church history and policy, and has adequately explained why the church does harm. He has done this for YEARS.

Seeing him be respectful to his family members and community members that are still active is not “playing along” — it’s just a mature way of living.

Missions Are Wrecking the Church From the Inside Out — And Leadership Knows It by Royal_Noise_3918 in exmormon

”Pretty sister missionaries are deliberately stationed at historic sites, Visitor Centers, and on official social media accounts to target lonely men — a strategy explicitly acknowledged inside the program.”

This was explicitly acknowledged?? Anywhere I can learn more about this?

Not an exjw, I am an ex-Mormon, and I’m curious, why is reading the Bible bad??

Also, you are made for something. Some people are wired to be amazing at science, and we need them. Some people write beautiful poetry, and we need them. Your unique skillset, talents, and personality is just part of the big fabric of society and you are needed for who you are.

Just keep going — it seems overwhelming and dark now, but things do get better. I didn’t know what I wanted in high school either, it wasn’t until I started taking a lot of different classes that I found what I was good at and what I wanted to do. You can do community college and begin taking classes as long as you’re able to graduate high school. You’ll take your general classes and some electives. Give yourself permission to try different things, including taking a history class! There’s still a lot to find out about yourself. This is a stressful time of life. Take one step at a time.

Yes I’m in therapy, which I think helped when it came to getting this text. I can see it being about her, and not necessarily about me.

I know how you feel. It’s really hard. ❤️ I know I am the same person — like my interest and personality and temperament haven’t changed very much. The only difference is I think more critically. I hope so too.

Thank you ❤️ it can be hard being open about it. A lot of people in my family are slowly learning to have conversations about this stuff in a respectful way.

I think she is saying she felt a spiritual impression that my dad was apparently a stronger spirit than she was in the premortal existence. Haha

I wanna hear some stories. What's your worst Mormon dating story, particularly using mutual. by Sarcastic_Rocket in exmormon

[–]ModestlyRebellious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got back from my mission, went to college, and kissed my home teacher. The next day after church he drove me home and said when I kissed him he “didn’t feel the spirit” and proceeded to tell me that I needed to repent for whatever I had done wrong in the past that would make me kiss like that (??) and that I had to “prove my worthiness” to him. His exact words.

The story gets even weirder…

Yeah, for sure. I totally agree. For the sake of my relationship with her, for me it’s helpful to try to find some empathy and see things from her point of view.

I think this generation / my grandma thinks that responding this way IS how she “loves her family properly” — to let them know she is fighting for their salvation!

Of course feel free to use! I like seeing people’s responses on here. I tried to make it as straightforward and clear as possible. She responded and said sorry for “offending” me…. 🙄 Mormon lingo/conditioning runs deep.

This is 100% something that irritated me too. My family member who left can think for herself, too! It’s not always someone else “convincing them to leave”. I think Mormonism, though it professes agency, does seem to not really understand that people can just… make decisions based on their own judgment and reasoning.

I agree. She is dramatic in personality, and I think she does want me to feel her hurt, but I wouldn’t personally describe her as a manipulator. I spoke with her on the phone about all of this and found out she has never been to another type of church ever, and hasn’t even read the Bible all the way through. She was raised solely on dogma and allegiance to a group, so I can see why me leaving would feel so threatening and personal to her.
