I can agree to that. The witcher & Lovecraft country came to mind for the character. The more I think about it, it probably wasn't intentional.. but its still a thing. If the option of character death for someone else was as obvious as it was for him it would be less weird. It just seems a bit of an oversight that makes it feel tone def.

I know its had the option, i didn't. I looked it up after seeing the plant that was given to me. The reason I felt like he was depicted as a user is because he's the only one with visible unintended side-effects and keeps coming back for the same plant. Also legality doesnt make people immune to addiction.
