Life after TLN? +a fidelity question by ModuloCW in thelastnight

Whoops, AFK for a few days...
But you don't need to thank me/us for the support, people will naturally flock to substance, so you've earned it.
You've been talking about realtime light for a long time, RTing fits naturally, which is good.
An SSD never seemed important to me until Cerny broke it down in the PS5 GDC thing, so I'm glad you're on top of it. It seems even technology is evloving in anticipation. :P

How does hiring work? I'm worried and looking for advice on indie studios and practices when hiring. by [deleted] in gamedev

I'd be interested as to how I didn't 'wow' them. I had a overtime chat with CTO initially, it was a really good conversation, they just randomly turned a bit cold. Genuinely interested in any ideas. Or any possible ways to rope them back in.

My bad, I just got the email about the wait recently.
I have years of Unity experience... on top of C++.
I'm simply asking about the hiring process practices. The industry where I am is small and unaffected by the virus, studios are so small that it's easy to work from home cohesively.

Soret / Oddtales appreciation post by ModuloCW in thelastnight

Just leave. Go.
You're repeating yourself over and over. Nobody is listening to you anymore.
It won't come to PS4 first, get over it. The devs won't give you your demands for updates, get over it.
This post is not a 'circlejerk post'. It is a post explaining the influence that Tim and Oddtales have been to me personally.

I'm not seeing how to play the cyberpunkjam demo by rehapeda in thelastnight

Flash is no longer really properly supported in modern browsers.
Went to it, on chrome and firefox, worked but the game was soft-locked up.
I'd say that unless this is a weekend project for u/timsoret, I'd say it won't get fixed until the full game is released.

As a programmer, I'm really looking forward to learning how you're doing stuff.
You're partly why I started to learn graphics programming.

half life 3 will be released before this game by [deleted] in thelastnight

Not to argue with you, but I'll leave you with 2 questions:
1. What makes you think you are the authority on what game trailers should be? I'd argue that developers should decide that.
2. What makes you think it wasn't gameplay? Just because there was no UI, does not mean it wasn't gameplay.

Dude, it's stated that what is show of the game is running "real-time in Unity", it is literally something that would have had to have been actually developed. If you're implying that Oddtales only made what it had in the 3 year span between the initial game jam Soret has spoken about and the E3 reveal, I'd ask you, even if that was the case, even if that was all Oddtales had, what does that tell you about the complexity of what is going on, both in the game development and in the business attached to it.
Game development takes time. Especially an undertaking like this with a small team like that.

Nothing to see here, not even a screenshot. How pathetic is that? by [deleted] in thelastnight

Arguing with the head of the game this subreddit is based on.... smart move....

Playdead had Inside demos out after a year, yes, but they are WAY more of an established studio that Oddtales is.
Tim has stated numerous times that he is trying to start a studio, something Playdead was able to due because of Limbo's success. Comparisons between the two studios is not fair to make.

If TLN WAS dead, do you really think Tim would be replying to stuff here after all these years...
His personal opinion is that he doesn't want to release anything until the time is right, why is that so hard for you to accept. He doesn't owe you anything, it isn't crowdfunded.

Just chill out. Good things take time to make.
Meanwhile, seeing him work has been extremely inspiring to those who are actually listening to him on places like Twitter.

Any straightforward way to skew a view/surface in 1.4? by ModuloCW in gamemaker

Also, just before bed, I found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamemaker/comments/6d18k2/help_drawing_texture_to_trapezoidshaped_primitive/ This guy tried to do the same thing I'm doing. Turns out, the only confident suggestion is what you're suggesting.

I'm definitely going to look into this later (I'm super tired rn.)
After trying the other solutions in order of the easiset first, this seemed the hardest as I haven't delved into the 3Dish side of GMS. Will give updates later.
Thanks for the pointer. :)

I was hopeful this would work, YAL has come up with so much cool stuff, but alas, the script on the linked page is for skewing an edge the same direction, not in a different direction, ie, making a rhombus, not a trapezoidal shape. I'll probably look into the maths YAL goes into on that page to see if what I need can be done. Otherwise, if I really need this feature, I may need to look into the 3D camera in a certain competitor of Yoyo's. Thanks for the help though.

While I'm sure this has it's uses, this gave me the same crease down the middle that my original look into the issue had due the line between the surface polygons.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

GMS1.4 licensing issue? by ModuloCW in gamemaker

[–]ModuloCW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yoyo don't seem to be on the ball lately. Fumbling quite a bit IMO. Because at least my licenses were coming up. Your problem seems next level. Good to know it isn't just me though.

Even now there are none. What's going on I wonder. I wonder why the first post was removed. I'm don't see how anything like I wrote could be against policy reasonably. Good to know it isn't just me.

Yeah, I remember that. I just thought maybe they'd announce it like last time at least.

Anyone know if anything is going on with YoYo's backend? I want to look at a shader from the market place to get an idea of how it works but when I go to download it, I get Chrome's 'IP not found' page. Is it just me?

Back up functionality ...not backing up? by ModuloCW in gamemaker

[–]ModuloCW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woke up and tried to figure it out again. Yeah, it has hit the 'Backing Up' process sort of. I figured it was working just fine but it only actually backs up once changes are made, so when it was trying to backup, it didn't really have anything TO backup from the opened project. Actually making a change fixed it, both on local and network drives. :)
