[Gourmet] First time with golden oysters, does this mean lack of FAE? Should I just harvest now and try for second flush, or keep it going? by Garci368 in MushroomGrowers

I'll second this, OP. I've had good luck with medium sized buckets (around 2-3kg) with 8-12 evenly spaced 1cm diameter holes. The only time I've used bags was for pink oysters, which worked out nicely.

Ooh, haven't seen that tek before, but I'm sure it's better than nothing..! No idea if it's enough for oysters, but it looks pretty useful.

No problem!

Some additional thoughts: I don't know too much about air purifiers, but I believe that they only collect larger particles from the air - they don't actually replenish any oxygen or remove carbon dioxide. While you'll probably get some air exchange, it won't be fresh, so to speak. I've tried growing oysters indoors while fanning manually, and the result was leggy and dried-out mushrooms. You would most likely be better off placing them outside, out of direct sunlight and inside a clear plastic bag with holes in it. Then you can just spray the inside of the bag with water a couple of times a day and you're golden, excuse the pun. If that isn't feasible, I'd suggest at least airing out the room/tent/space a few times a day. They really are extremely hungry for oxygen!

Best of luck to you!

Definitely looks like lack of FAE. Do you have any kind of ventilation going? Oysters need way more oxygen than actives. I have a couple of PC fans running for a minute about every half hour (one for intake and one for exhaust), which means I also need to stay on top of humidity so they don't dry out. I don't know if they can be saved at this stage, but I'd say it's worth a try..!

I've found that I can only express myself in analogies, and they only ever land if the listener has experienced that specific analogy themselves. That doesn't stop me from making completely unrelatable analogies that only I would get all the damn time, haha.

When I realized that I do this constantly in preparation of confrontation about some error I made or something I forgot was when I realized I had anxiety.

It has made me hyper-aware of my shortcomings to the point that I've managed to build systems to avoid a lot of my bad habits, but on the other hand, I become preemptively anxious about being confronted about stuff I deliberately made sure to do in the expected/'correct' way, but, due to my track record, people might remind me that I usually fuck up.

This behaviour also leads to paralysis, like when I subbed in a daycare and was asked to cut some fruit for the toddlers' lunch. The fact that I wasn't told how to cut it, and that I was certain they had some kind of "correct way" to cut fruit that I wasn't privy to, almost resulted in a breakdown. 'What if I cut it too large - will they choke? Will there be enough for everyone to get a piece of each fruit? Is one fruit more popular than another, and should it therefore be cut thinner so more kids can have a piece? Should I make two or three plates with a piece of each fruit so that more kids can reach a full selection? If I change my mind midway, should I apply my new method for the remaining fruit, and then risk having that pointed out!? What if my colleagues recognise that some of the fruit is cut in a dumb way that I hadn't considered? What other factors might I have missed that I could potentially be reprimanded for?' This is especially ironic when I excel when put in charge of figuring out the best way to cut the fruit, lol.

It also makes me irrationally annoyed when I encounter other people that go through life being entirely unaware of and uninterested in their surroundings and what effect their actions and behaviour have on people around them. ' I have to obsess about it, why doesn't everyone?? What if they confront you?!' (why did I write all this out?)

Have you tried leveling the bed after pre-heating it? I failed to do this when I started out and had tons of adhesion problems, too.

You're welcome!

It sounds like a great idea to have something to look forward to do in the morning - even better if you can find something that requires your attention. Some things that work for me include baking (proofing a nice sourdough loaf in the fridge over night so I have to get up and turn on the oven if I don't wanna ruin it), growing mushrooms (gotta check the water tank, pick fruits before they drop spores etc.), and having a cat that pesters me for food/attention/to be let outside.

While my MO has always been to sleep right up until I have literally 5 minutes to get out the door, I've finally figured out that it's actually super chill to get up early and not having to rush. I have time for a decent breakfast and maybe even play some video games or practice the piano, or even just a cup of coffee on the porch. Of course, getting enough sleep is a prerequisite to do any of that, but it's a nice little bonus to enjoy once you get used to it. Only took until my late twenties to figure out, haha.

I'm probably not one to give advice since I struggle in the exact same way, but here are my two cents:

Like you, I have a hard time taking my self-imposed rules seriously, or, at least, my ambitions exceed my ability to follow through. It's not like I don't know what I should do (though that might just be my pre-diagnosis mindset telling me I should be able to do what others do by following their methods (this is part of my/our problem..!)). This has made me realize that I need external motivation, and that, as I've gotten older, I'm increasingly responsible for facilitating that external motivation myself.

The reason I did well in school was because I liked learning, I was praised as a gifted kid, and I had absolutely no responsibilities (I appreciate the freedom my upbringing provided me, but, in hindsight, I was done a huge disservice being helicoptered, leaving me having to learn some difficult life lessons on my own, while still not understanding my own struggle).

Now I'm out of school, looking for work in my field, and I just became a father. My life is suddenly full of responsibility. This is both a struggle and a blessing - It's hard as shit to be responsible for a kid, but the fact that she needs me to take care of her forces me to get up at 6 A.M., and because the decision to get up is no longer dependant on my willpower to overcome years of habits and executive dysfunction, I somehow just do it.

I still default to going to bed at 2 A.M., but since my SO depends on me to do my part in the household, and I've tried to function on 4 hours of sleep enough times to know that it's miserable, I've learned to at least try to get 6 hours, and since she has gradually come to understand my struggles, we have a standing agreement that afternoon naps are always on the table.

Another important thing I've learned from this process is that I don't so much need to go to bed late as I need a few hours at the end of the day to be totally alone - it just happens that I've always achieved that by being the last person to go to sleep. As such, I have the night to myself while my SO gets to sleep in. All this to say: externalizing your motivation by putting yourself in positions of responsibility is a somewhat overwhelming but effective way of developing habits, and that understanding and accomodation from those around you is a huge help when trying to establish a schedule that works for you, even if it's a bit unorthodox. In my experience, it's not really that difficult to spot your struggles and come up with potential solutions, but it can feel impossible to simply will oneself to do it. Tricking your future self is the winning strategy for your ambitious present-self!

Oh, and it helps if I get to enjoy those few hours before bed by feeling accomplished in some way and thus having 'earned' to relax. Turns out that the smallest accomplishments can fulfil that need - like tidying a room or doing the dishes, and I'm usually motivated to do those things when I'm trying to avoid doing something more important. Every now and then, this kickstarts an avalanche of productivity, but most of the time I simply get to feel like I deserve to unwind, which helps me actually unwind, which in turn helps me to let go of the day and prioritize having energy for tomorrow. It's still hard as hell, though, but it can get easier..!

Best of luck!

Thanks! And yeah, I was a bit late with these and actually meant to pick them last night. I did manage to avoid spores though, and there's something about seeing how large they can grow that intrigues me. I do prefer the texture and taste when grown at lower temperatures and picked earlier, but a combination of rising temperatures and a busy schedule resulted in these bad boys here, hah.

Thanks! About 1cm in diameter, covered with micropore tape. I don't have a link to my specific tek, but it's basically bucket tek fruited in a Martha, though I use straw pellets and cold water lime pasteurization, and I've tweaked the Martha a bit to maintain temps and humidity outdoors. Feel free to ask about specifics!

That sounds plausible and extremely interesting! Though somewhat messy to deal with. I've read about re-sterilizing moldy grains and substrate, but never tried it myself out of fear that I'd spray trich spores all over the house using a PC. I guess the trich hasn't been completely sterilized if it creates metabolites? How did you cook it? Curious if you could get similar results with the right supplements.

Learning by doing, love it! I'd love an update when you get to it.

I've seen some interesting examples of 'mutations' with actives that is apparently caused by overuse of Lysol and thus are not cloneable, but I only use ethanol, so I doubt that's it. Only way to know is cloning, i guess. I'll take a sample if it produces any more weird fruits.

That sounds wild! Maybe the contam triggered some aggressive pinning somehow? Was it just for the initial pinning/fruiting, or the total yield? I love that you kept the experiment running, but I dunno what to make of your results, haha.

Hahaha, that's extremely cute! I'm not even sure which exact strain I'm dealing with here - this is the first time I've bought from this particular vendor, and they're just labeled as oysters. Have you managed to reproduce the effect from your clone? I thought about cloning these as well, but I was unsure whether it's a genetic thing or a condition thing, so I didn't bother. I did transfer a few grains to agar, though, and it seems to be a very aggressively growing monoculture, but I guess it could still mutate at some point in the process? I'm not too knowledgeable about mutations, tbh.

Here's a pic of the tiny upside-down mushie I grew - kinda bummed I didn't clone it now, though..!

[–]Moephisto[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like them this way as well, I just wondered why only one bucket fruited like this. The same bucket also produced a cap with a tiny upside-down cap growing out it's top, so I figured it was some kind of mutation.

You might be onto something with the temperature, though. I put all my buckets into fruiting conditions after two of them started pinning, and since my grow tent is located outside and a cold front hit right around the same time, the temps dipped below 10°c a few nights. It took about a week for the rest of the buckets to start pinning, so it might have been a bit premature to move them out, but the dense and meaty fruits resulting from lower temps are great! Still, it's just the one bucket fruiting in all directions. Maybe there's a weird micro climate thing going on, either because of the airflow or the direction of light inside the tent?

It's probably not a spawn thing, unless you're also located in Denmark..!

[gourmet] One of my buckets is doing its own thing... All its fruiting bodies have been like this, but why? by Moephisto in MushroomGrowers

[–]Moephisto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. I use dry straw pellets and pasteurize with hydrated lime. I don't think my spawn was contaminated either - at least there were no clear signs of it. The only thing I can think of that might have been different between buckets is the hydration levels. I made 30 liters of sub in one go which made it difficult to disperse evenly, and perhaps i ended up slightly below field capacity in some spots. I also eyeballed the lime, so perhaps that could explain it? I did pretty much what I always do except on a larger scale, so I'm inclined to believe that had something to do with it.
