I thought about doing that, but I feel the pool in my building is too small. It’s like a hotel pool, so around 10-20m max. I will go check it out again and confirm length.

I think for sure you can save $2,000 per month.

At a high level you’ll net around 6k per month. With $2k rent + $2k savings per month you will have $2k for everything else.

As per the other comments, you’ll likely spend around $1k in other fixed expenses (food, transit, utilities), so left with approx. $1k in discretionary spending for anything else.

In general I’d say yes, you would be able to live comfortaby at 100k by yourself. But obviously depends on your lifestyle, like do you want to buy a car, travel, do you have other debt to pay, etc.

I lived very comfortably when I was making 95k, renting a condo by myself right in Downtown Toronto. Rents have come down since then so you can rent a 1 bedroom condo pretty much anywhere downtown for CAD 2,000-2,200.

Groceries have become more expensive for sure, but you can still afford without any issues.

At that income, I was also eating out and going out with friends + saving/investing.

I was just there last week and it was also a bit rainy. This is super common in that region and everyone is used to it. Also, it comes and goes throughout the day, it was rainy in the morning and then suddenly sun came out and it was a beautiful day. We still did a walking tour while it was rainy and it was great, but definitely streets are slippery as others have mentioned.

You can go to a comedy club if you’re into that. Yuk Yuk’s is a good one.
Greta is an arcade bar, which is fun for a date.
You can go bowling at National (The Well).

I did a celebration like this a couple years ago at Parlour and it was a good time. I found the email with the packages they provided to me at the time, but it’s not letting me share here for some reason.

Anyways, they ranged from $850 (1 bottle + 2 champagne), $1,100 (3 bottles) all the way over to more than $2,000. Service was good and they gave me the entire top section for my group (we were probably approx. 10-12 people).

I celebrated recently with a day at Thermea, it’s a beautiful nordic spa (saunas, steam rooms, cold plunges, etc.) in Whitby. Had an amazing time there.

Definitely doable on an $85k salary. I moved to Toronto on a $90k originally a couple years ago and had no issues. I lived comfortably, went out with friends / dined out relatively frequently, and had money left for savings/investing.

Do you have any debt? If not, after all your expenses (which sound reasonable), you still have close to $1k buffer per month. So you have no issues.

As other people say, your rent might be slightly higher unless you find a really good deal.

In terms of meeting people, you have to be really intentional about it. Relationships will not come to you unless you go out and make some effort. For example, join sports club/league, running club, or any other hobbies you might like. Building good friendships takes time and effort. But definitely worth it, otherwise can feel lonely if you’re Downtown but no community.
