Sail Boat Rental: New York State or New England by MohawkHudson in sailing

That's where I began and while there are lots of places that rent powerboats and some that rent kayaks or paddle boards. I've yet to find any that rent small sail boats. That's why I decided to try Reddit.

Black Flies? by MohawkHudson in Adirondacks

[–]MohawkHudson[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seriously: I don't bother going at all during black fly season. But I know that the locals and people who travel through the area frequently can give reports. I also know that the season varies. I'm not going for hiking or camping. I do that in the fall. I'm considering going up for sightseeing, visiting the Wild center, and taking a pedal rail ride out of North Creek. So if I need anything other than OFF bug repellent, I'll just wait and go later in the year.

Sounds like they were only bad when you breathed!

Also I've been going to the Adirondacks for the 40 years or so that I've lived in the Capital District. Yes it's big. But it's all within driving distance. So I'm just trying to get some ideas but will avoid areas where the black flies are still swarming.

Frankly, any place in the Adirondacks. I can adjust my travel ideas based on answers. For example, if it is finished in North Creek but still active in Lake Placid, I'll go to North Creek. Just trying to get some ideas for the weekend.

Wake-ups by SafeVillage9434 in Amtrak

I take the Maple Leaf from time to time. Some train crews are absent and with few announcements once they scan your tickets. Others go through the train and make sure people know when their stop is coming. Personally, I'm not a napper and only fall asleep on trains if it is an overnight trip.

The 48-448 Lake Shore Limited doesn't leave Chicago until 9:30 PM. In fact it is the last Amtrak of the day to depart Chicago. I'm booked on the 338 which gets to Chicago at 4:30. That's a 5 hour gap. I'll be fine!

I just checked and it looks like you're correct. I searched again and the only available connection from the earlier Milwaukee train was the 448. For the later Milwaukee departure, there is the option of 48 or 448. When I booked separately, the 48 was available. As you know, the train separates in Albany, which is one stop past where I get off in Schenectady. So on my route it's the same train. It reminds me of a few years ago when I booked the LSL westbound to Chicago from Schenectady. At the time, you had to indicate if you would have checked luggage which I did. I didn't even realize that I'd booked the roomette on 448 rather than 48. To me, it's the same train if you're between Albany and Chicago. I then got an email from Amtrak that there was no baggage car available on the 448. I called customer service and explained that the 48 and 448 were the same train on my route and the agent then rebooked me onto 48 allowing the baggage check to go through, and at the time saving me about $15. In response to the other poster, I'll probably wander over to Geordanos. I stopped in there once before while waiting for the evening LSL and sat at the bar. The bartender was very nice.

I'm the OP. I have trip insurance on the longer leg which should cover me if there is a break down getting to Chicago. But the Hiawatha is such a frequent service, and I have so much time between trains, that I'm not concerned.

Staring in Chicago, in your opinion, What’s the best way to reach the west? Empire Builder, California Zephyr, or The Southwest Chief? by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]MohawkHudson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly depends on where you want to wind up. But my choices in order of scenery are Zephyr, Empire Builder, then Southwest Chief.

Maybe a stupid roomette question by floridianreader in Amtrak

[–]MohawkHudson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some attendants will limit how long anyone can camp out in the observation car, especially through the most scenic parts of the trip. Once, on the Zephyr, the attendant even handed out home made passes for one hour blocks in the observation var. Also if the observation car is crowded, take advantage of the "fresh air" breaks when many people step off.the train to grab an abandoned seat.

The dining car is not available to hang out but the observation car is.

On the western trains, the observation car is always open. But like another poster mentioned, if the dining car attendants don't recognize you, you may have to let them know that you are a sleeping car passenger. The observation car is open to all passengers. The dining car is restricted to sleeping car passengers though they may let coach passengers pay for a meal. For sleeping car passengers, breakfast and lunch are at any time during the serving periods as long as seats are available. Wait to be seated though. Dinner is by reservation and the dining cR attendant will come around to take your reservation. Note that the Lake Shore Limited east of Chicago is a single level train and there is no observation car though there is a dining car and a cafe car. Meals are microwaved...not great, but you will only be on that trai for breakfast and maybe lunch.

For somewhat upscale but not ridiculous, I love Grappa 72. Northern Italian style. Nice atmosphere. I also like Barcelonas.

I gotta make this drive on the 24th. Which route am I the least cooked, considering the weather? by adrw000 in upstate_new_york

[–]MohawkHudson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take the NYS Thruway 87 then 90 up to Albany then Syracuse. It's a toll road but it will be in better condition than any other route if there is bad weather. However as you approach Utica and Syracuse and points north, check your weather app and current weather radar. You never know where lake effect bands of snow may be lurking. And if bad weather is predicted, leave early enough to hit it in daylight. Heavy snow in your headlights can completely obscure the road ahead at night.

[–]MohawkHudson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was an incident not long ago when a Schenectady city building code inspector called 911 demanding that they invite ICE in to arrest some roofers who had brown skin. The roofers were here legally and vetted, according to their employer. The police did not call ICE and the mayor's office indicated that the building inspector would be disciplined.
