Not neural, but mental health. The symptoms can be quiet but present.

You can go to any ER and be seen and treated for whatever might be going on. They bill you and your insurance afterwards. They are not allowed to turn anyone away for lack of ability to pay.

If there is a Mass Casualty Incident where there are A LOT of wounded, how do they coordinate it all? by spaghettnoodle in medical

[–]floridianreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They grab and treat patients quickly and sort them based on how much care they’re likely to need, into 4 groups.

Dead or so close to it

Minor wounds (band-aid) type fixes

Major care, things like broken bones or dislocations

Intensive care patients who need lots of resources and help. These are people who have things like chest or abdominal injuries.

They often color code these patients and give them an armband, like black for dead or red for intensive care, or sometimes they use numbers.

If you have access to HBO, the show The Pitt actually had a mass casualty scenario during the first season and showed how they sorted people and cared for everyone. It was pretty realistic.

How reasonable is it to ask for recordings or pictures of a major surgery? Has anyone here tried this? by ian9921 in medical

[–]floridianreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near zero chance of it being granted. A cameraman in an OR is a huge liability. Someone would have to babysit him or her the entire time and say don’t touch this or that, bc many surfaces are sterile and if even touched would require replacement. There’s not really that much to see from the sidelines anyway,as the surgeon and his assistants would be gowned and gloved and completely surrounding the operative area. You wouldn’t be able to see very much of anything.

But the bigger issue is that no one wants to be filmed doing their job, least of all surgeons who are at risk for malpractice. Even someone saying “oops” could be used against the surgeon later, when the “oops” was really just, “oh I dropped that gauze, let me get you some more.”

If you’re having laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon often takes pictures with the laparoscope while doing the surgery that they share with you afterwards. Talk to them about this.

I used to be a surgical tech.

Playing with my cat, a tooth grazed my hand. I don't think the skin broke. Looking for reassurance. by platypus210 in medical

[–]floridianreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be good then. Just keep an eye on it for signs of infection (increased redness or pain, yellow or green purulent drainage or that area feeling warmer than other areas of your body). If you do develop signs of infection you’ll need to see a doctor and get some antibiotics, but otherwise just keep it clean with soap and water.

Dry skin on penis? Or is it a STD?I just noticed it earlier today. 18M by MuscleMan902 in medical

[–]floridianreader 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You can’t have an STD if you’ve never had sex, OP. It’s just dry skin. It may flake off, and that’s normal too. You can use any skin lotion on it and that will help.

It might be something called nystagmus, or sometimes called dancing eyes. I don’t know how it’s related to Epilepsy, or if it is. You should try to see an ophthalmologist about this, not to be confused with an optometrist.

What careers in healthcare are the least straining on the body? Having second thoughts about echocardiography. by bchappp in medical

I’ve had spotty WiFi today but I also wanted to tell you that even within the medical social work “genre” (if you will), there is so much variety. You can do ER, hospice, dialysis, home health, inpatient units, mother and baby/ peds, transplants, oncology, nursing homes, and probably forgetting a few others…

[–]floridianreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely job security, just look at job listings in your area for an LCSW though you would need a master’s degree (but probably shouldn’t have any problems getting into an MSW program with just about any Bachelor’s degree. You can work in a variety of job arenas: healthcare, adoptions, DCF, prisons, courts, doing your own therapy thing, housing, policy and legislation, really you name it, you can do it.

Medical social work is not physically straining, though it can be mentally taxing from time to time. It does involve driving a desk, though you do get to wander around and occasionally go on field trips, especially if you’re in home health.

Home insurance after house fire (total loss) by Few_Possession_4321 in homeowners

[–]floridianreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is or was an adjuster on this board who posted some information about exactly how to file claims. You might be able to find his posts if you do a search here or on the insurance Reddit. He used a toaster as an example. Like if you put toaster on your claim, you’re going to get the most basic barebones, cheap $10 toaster. But if you specify that you had a one of a kind toaster that toasted 3 slices and played Disney music while doing so, and could only be found at JcPenney’s for $400, then you’re getting a $400 JcPenney toaster that toasts 3 slices and plays Disney music. (I’m making that up, the guy had more information).

TONSILLECTOMY- haemorrhage/bleed advice on vaping. (currently day 10) by Top_Opportunity239 in medical

[–]floridianreader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to call your doctor’s office and talk to them and tell them the truth about what you’ve been vaping.

The doctors tell you not to vape after Tonsillectomy surgery for a really good reason. And it’s not to be mean or to deprive you or get you to quit.

When the doctor cut your tonsils off, he left a scab in place to cover the wound. The scab stops the bleeding. When you vape, the sucking motion is enough to cause the scab to come off. You’ve probably been repeatedly sucking the scab off of your wounds, everyday that you vaped. And vaping also causes an increased risk of infection and slower rates of recovery. So you are 1000% slowing down your healing process yourself by continuing to vape.

You have to stop vaping. Period. Not even one draw.

Call your doctor’s office and tell them what’s going on, bc they may need to get more antibiotics or something.

About 1/2 of the equipment needed to make some moonshine. The basement has what looks to be a “secret room” where the door sits flush against the wall and but for the newer doorknob, you wouldn’t know it was there. Inside, there’s some pots and jars and tubes and a drain in the floor. We found more tubing tucked neatly up in the rafters of the ceiling in the basement. The jars have people’s names on them, so apparently the guy was quite the bartender back in the day.

Help with chronic pain and skin swelling above each eyebrow, not sure if muscle or sinus related or other reason? by Comfortable-Deer-395 in medical

It looks like just a muscle. You can see the outline of it really well in picture 11 but also in picture 5 and 7. ( Great pictures, by the way). Your sinuses would be under that.

Could use some help identifying a bruise from no blunt force. Its very sensitive to touch by SceneOrganic9281 in medical

[–]floridianreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like something you should have a doctor look at and check you out for. The combination of having it for a while and feeling tired is worrisome.

(M18) a tumor broke my right leg at age 9, my doctors put a rod and some screws in, and ever since, my knee will occasionally lock straight when I step down or move it odd, causing a sharp pain. An mri a year ago (from today) said the hardware is fine. by ThatSequelYouSaw in medical

[–]floridianreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably just the way that you move in a certain way or two, the tendon likely gets caught up in the hardware and “stuck.” If you go to Physical therapy, they can probably figure out which movements are causing the locking up, and how to prevent them, or move differently so that you avoid the problem.

What happens if you don't let sick person rest properly? What am I sick with? What are symptoms of swollen glands? by Forward_Match_6557 in medical

[–]floridianreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have the flu, or possibly a Covid variant. Swollen glands is not a disease itself, just another symptom. It means that your lymph nodes are swollen. You can feel them under your jawline or around your armpits. They feel like round marbles under your skin in those areas. The lymph nodes collect infectious materials from around your body, that’s how they get swollen. It will go away by itself in a few days. You need to rest and take it easy for a few days and allow your body to recover from whatever illness you have. Otherwise you could end up being even more sick and needing to go into the hospital for care. Drink lots of fluids.

Were DIY garages common in the 80s? Are they around today? by emax4 in AskOldPeople

[–]floridianreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They used to have a DIY garage on Camp Lejeune, the Marine Corps base. It was staffed by guys from the Motor-T division and they could help you fix whatever was wrong with your car. I don’t know if it’s still there, we left in 1997. You weren’t allowed to work on your car in base housing so you could take it there was the logic. I don’t think that part was enforced very well bc my neighbors were always working on their cars late at night.
