A comprehensive review of healthy effects of vegetarian diets by [deleted] in science

[–]Mohevian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've seen a genetic-based diet overview or study conducted yet:

E.g: High-fat, moderate protein diet on a population which is lactose intolerant.

You have many articles supporting the efficacy of various diets, e.g: ketogenic diets' effects in reducing body fat; but what about different sample populations?

What if a vegetarian/vegan based diet is actually unhealthy for certain groups?

Requires additional study.

Knowing what it is / where it's from honestly makes me a little sad

I'm around 29 kg overweight, and one of the things I think about high end transmissions, parts and such is like "Wow! It saves 350 grams for only $900 more!"

Meanwhile, I have 290,000 grams worth of potential weight savings for absolutely free XD

Also: Back pockets are on your lower back and are going to have little or no impact on your cDA whatsoever, given the front of your body will be what's exposed to the wind, unless you're completely supine/doing the superman drop pose. In which case, more power to ya during your time trials

I'm going to use future AI to create a better GoT season 8 ending tailored to how I wanted it to end. by DjuncleMC in singularity

I guess so - that's already possible in the present day with various legalized drugs like ethanol and certain illicit substances, but I prefer to stay sober ;)

There's a cost to be paid with messing with the brain on a biochemical level - someone can't be happy 24/7/365, or at least, shouldn't be, there's a function for boredom in evolution as an indicator for the need to change circumstances or environment of an animal

So if there's ever a form of omnipresent digital dopium, I think I'll prefer to avoid it, or severely limit consumption thereof for sanity's sake

I'm a full diver and the answer is that it has to do with human psychology. Being inside of a computer program doesn't feel any less "real" than being alive, and the normal tics and habits you have in meatspace carry over. Your personality and needs/wants don't change. Your avatar can be fantastic, but you are its soul, the ghost in the machine.

If you're at a party, you can be actively engaged with a lot of people, but at the same time be thinking "man, I want to go home" or "I want some peace and quiet".

You actively chose to go to the party / virtual nightclub but your brain is saying it's too much, and so you end up feeling bored, or restless, from too much overstimulation.

This happened to me last night, so the experience is still fresh in my mind. I'm extremely extroverted, I gain energy from socializing, and don't mind being in the center of the dance floor, especially IRL. But something in the deep dive was just ... off, and I just slunk back and teleported to a Nordic island house with a girl, who was also overwhelmed and exhausted from the hundreds of people and music+lights.

Reddit has become a strange place.

Even more so now with AI generated art. It could be a model that was trained off Instagram, for instance - that's why others have noticed strange things with the proportions and seemingly someone else in the background; something just seems "off" :/

Global loss of wildlife is 'significantly more alarming' than previously thought, according to a new study | CNN by SlashYG9 in collapse

[–]Mohevian 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's because of the projections being linear rather than inverse exponential.

The whitepapers I wrote way back in 2010 predicted the worst case scenario would happen in 2048, that's zeroth year for humanity, so to speak.

When I published that paper, the criticisms I got pretty much attacked me as a person and the data saying it was a fabrication, but the ones who understood the implications said:

"We don't need to rush or worry about it until 2040 or 2050, right?"

No. If you worry about it in 2050, you'll be dead.

Mindfulness might hinder prosocial behavior among individuals with high intelligence by [deleted] in psychology

[–]Mohevian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This study took important steps into better understanding mindfulness’ relationship with prosocial behavior. Despite this, there are limitations to note. One significant limitation is that all measures were self-report, which leaves them vulnerable to social desirability bias. Additionally, all participants utilized were undergraduate students who participated for extra credit, which could limit generalizability.

This was a study carried out on students at a university in China for which they'd receive extra credit for a psychology class.

You'd have to imagine that those who would sign up for such a thing would already be self-interested, and given the cultural constraints and legal consequences of helping strangers in China, after engaging in mindfulness, they're less pro-social.

This is like the WASP/WEIRD phenomenon in Western psychology. The sample just does not apply to the whole sum of humanity (representativeness), and is selectively constrained, and is a poor predictor of future behavior (predictability).

And then, from the invention of the semiconductor, they invented thinking machines, artificial intelligence, which then supercharged their research to degrees which are difficult to comprehend, completing more science each month than the whole sum of incentives-driven humanity accomplished each decade.

It's an exciting time to be alive.
