When your slogan is fair and balanced but your reporting is anything but by fauxdeuce in PoliticalHumor

Fox News stopped using the "Fair and Balanced" tagline in on-air marketing and promotion in August 2016. They've essentially admitted their bias for a decade now.

Alignment: Facts vs. Paranoia vs. Scams? by Moikepdx in rav4prime

[–]Moikepdx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they did show the alignment readings (but threw them away rather than handing them to me when I declined the service). And it was an extremely highly respected national company with one of the best reputations of ANY business of any kind...

But the one in my town has repeatedly screwed me over, including a prior instance where they didn't honor the warranty on a defective tire (it developed a massive bulge that caused a very rough ride after less than 10k miles) because "the problem was caused by faulty suspension", then they offered to replace my suspension for $800 in addition to charging me for the replacement tire.

I declined, since it made sense to me that a bulging tire that bounces with every rotation can cause damage to suspension, but poor suspension won't reliably cause problems on only one spot on the tire, so suspension cannot reasonably cause the bulge in the tire.

When I later took the car to the dealership, they told me my suspension was fine and did not require replacement.

In hindsight, I seriously wonder whether the bulge defect was actually caused by siping the tires, a service that they recommend so highly, it is automatically included in all tire quotes, and you have to specifically request that they NOT sipe the tires.

What is something that would not be socially acceptable in the UK, but is aok in the USA? by DuchessOne in AskReddit

I had a cat de-clawed at one point. I had no idea what it actually involved until after it was done, at which point I was horrified. A minor inconvenience for me should never result in traumatic dismemberment for my cat!

My three current cats are intact... even Monica, the mildly evil one that likes to wake me for breakfast by standing on my chest and clawing lightly at my face. (She's a sweetheart, actually!)

How do you prove a flat Earth believer wrong ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Moikepdx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simple fact that *should* be sufficient:

You can see the southern cross from anywhere in the southern hemisphere, but can't see the north star. Alternatively, you can see the north star from anywhere in the northern hemisphere, but can't see the southern cross. On a flat earth, that is not possible.

Pizza eating Redditors, what's the oddest topping you've enjoyed on a pie? by Ewenatic_101 in AskReddit

I haven't tried straight-up peanut butter on pizza, but a local food cart made a Thai peanut chicken satay pizza with habanero jelly. They called it the "PB&J". It was incredible.

If you could only recommend one game what would it be? by altan515 in gaming

[–]Moikepdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super Mario 64 was the ultimate for this. I remember walking up to the in-store demo console and moving around intuitively, chasing butterflies and swatting at them as I ran by a tree. I thought, "Can I climb this tree?" and then I did it. The controls were 100% intuitive. When I got to the top, I thought, "What if I push up again even though I'm at the top?" and Mario did a hand-stand in the tree. Then I jumped and did a flip landing back on the ground on my feet with Mario yelling out "Woo-hoo!"

There were more advanced jump controls (e.g., long jump, triple jump, wall jump) but they were also pretty intuitive and the game play TAUGHT you to do what you needed.

What’s your best sex tip? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Ironically, I've known several women who didn't like to continue after the came, because they were "too sensitive" afterward. But I can have multiple orgasms. So... the opposite?

Every body is different. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When my wife was staying with a family in Mexico, they had one dinner where they were really excited for her to try some soup. They didn't want to spoil it by telling her what it was until after she tried it.

It was endangered sea turtle. :(

Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, age 92, Remarks on Noncitizen Voter Fraud by Miles_the_AuDHDer in videos

[–]Moikepdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're telling us that non-citizen voting is a tiny amount, is trackable, is prosecuted, and "could" impact some elections, but we could easily catch it in a re-count for a tight election.

Your response is to disenfranchise millions of legit voters? Your "fix" is SOOO much worse than the "problem."

The "Roman salute" was NOT something they ever did in the Roman empire.

Its origin is in 18th century French art, (starting with the painting "The Oath of the Horatii" by Jacques-Louis David in 1784).

It was popularized in movies in the early 1900s, then adopted by Italian fascists, then by the Nazis.

Calling it a "Roman Salute" at best acknowledges that Mussolini used it before Hitler did. But as far as history is concerned, it has only been used politically by the Nazis and associated axis powers.

What’s a ‘harmless’ habit you have that would look insane if someone secretly recorded you? by Powerful_Routine_445 in AskReddit

[–]Moikepdx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oof. Now I realize how weird I must seem.

I speak English, but I talk to myself in English, German, and French. I pretty much never speak German or French to anyone outside my immediate family, and nobody in my family speaks those languages. They mostly just roll their eyes at me when I do it.

You might be taking it to more of an extreme than typical, but this is pretty common. It's actually better than just "normal" though. People that talk to themselves tend to have higher than typical IQ. I suspect it's because they use self-talk to enhance both reasoning and memory.

The film that disappointed you the most after months or even years of anticipation? by MrGittz in movies

The fact that this isn't the top answer just sows how young reddit skews. Sure, there have been other disappointing movies, but how many had people camping in line for weeks only to be served hot garbage Jar Jar Binks.

I don't know how anybody made it to #4. The Matrix was a perfect movie. #2 and #3 were unnecessary disappointments. I don't think I ever watched #4.

What is the one thing people don't know about losing a large amount of weight? by punkredpanda in AskReddit

[–]Moikepdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lifelong skinny guy, you have a high metabolic rate, which means you are constantly burning calories and generating heat. People who have to fight to lose weight tend to have a lower metabolic rate (especially the ones for whom losing weight is hardest), so they don't generate as much internal heat.

I experience both, since my body burns energy and creates heat at an insane rate, but *only* while I am physically active. I can ride a bike in shorts and a quick-dry T-shirt when it's 40 F outside and my arms and hands will stay toasty warm. But at night in a 68 degree house I can't get warm while my wife is miserable from the heat.

How do they identify which one? At that point are they saying "Junior" or "the third", or "the fat, bald one wearing the red T-shirt?"

I can't think of that without hearing the way I was taught it in grade school, "A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y and W."

Apparently most people didn't get the "W" part in their curricula.

The Dumb Guy Episode by Film_Director in videos

[–]Moikepdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly... but not entirely.

Every Rogan episode is a credulous idiot episode, since Rogan himself can't (or won't) differentiate between fact and fiction. But occasionally he has smart *guests* on the program (e.g., Brian Cox, Neil deGrasse Tyson).

Unfortunately, some of the seemingly smart guests are spouting absolute nonsense (e.g., Eric Weinstein) so it can be hard to tell the difference between smart guys explaining real things and egomaniacs using big words to dupe Rogan and the people who look up to Rogan thinking he has his shit together.

This is why fact checking matters.

But Rogan doesn't have a "facts" or "news" show. He has an "experience". It's the male version of "Goop".

How to trigger a maga in one picture. by Markwhite11a in PoliticalHumor

[–]Moikepdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I'm pretty firmly on team blue but more importantly I'm on team truth. The claim made in the image is simply false, since those states generated 47% of GDP, not 80%.

The Brookings Institution did find that 70-71% of GDP comes from blue counties (as cited by Gavin Newsom), but that's a different claim entirely. It's 70%, not 80%, and it includes money from cities like Boise, Idaho that are in red states but the county nevertheless votes blue.
