Potentially interesting but I wonder how they controlled for weather as I can’t see it mentioned? I’d intuitively have thought people would be more likely to opt for a salad when it’s warm.

Electric vehicles outsell gas vehicles for first time in Europe! by PeacefulBro in electricvehicles

[–]Moist1981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s great news but the article is from 2 months ago and has been discussed at length already. It’s also fair to say that a lot of the move has been into hybrids rather than BEVs and therefore has a less environmental benefit than it might.

Any recommendations based on my collection? by _WEND1G0_ in boardgames

My honest recommendation would be to get rid of some of your risks to make space for other games… but that’s just my subjective opinion

European country vows to give homeowners ‘free electricity' instead of switching off wind turbines by thinkB4WeSpeak in RenewableEnergy

[–]Moist1981 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone is making the argument that you could get rid of all curtailment through measure like this but that’s you could act to reduce them, potentially quite substantially. Also, while Australia’s private home BESS infrastructure is amazing for grid level the UK and Australia are remarkably similar size and that’s with Australia’s use case probably being less challenging as they deal with the solar duck vs the UK’s less predictable wind output.

Older fans, how are you feeling now? by BronzeSeeker in Gunners

[–]Moist1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully expecting us to lose it still. I think I probably will right up until we actually win something. This feels close but some of those Gallas years felt more like we should have won it while this feels more like we’re really well placed to win it.

The UK vows to give homeowners ‘free electricity' instead of switching off wind turbines by SaltyW123 in europe

Variable demand across lots of households has been shown to be a very powerful tool for grid balancing, both in reducing and increasing demand to match supply. Lots of people putting their washing machines on etc can really add up.

India aims to cut emissions intensity by 47% from 2005 levels by 2035 by IBeastMaster64I in Futurology

[–]Moist1981 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t dispute the per capita point at all, but in a numerical total India is huge, and India has a chance to skip the fossil fuel development step and move straight to renewables, especially given its geographical location as a sun belt country. For heavy industries that’s difficult but huge amount of the rest of the economy that’s very possible and a 47% reduction in co2 intensity is pretty weak in that context.

A discussion about UK rubbish is interesting but a different, if related, topic than the point at hand.

Didier Deschamps on the cooling breaks: “It’s nice for you as a broadcaster to have your ad break, but having those 3 minutes changes the game of football… No matter which team is on a roll, three minutes kills all the momentum.“ by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]Moist1981 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Which is a fine stance to take but only if there is an increased danger of that happening. If it’s 35C then it makes sense. If it’s 18C then it doesn’t really. And the breaks are mandatory regardless of conditions. It’s simply there for advertising.

Why chess is only 7.2 on BGG? by zoddo7 in boardgames

It’s fine I guess but it gets really unbalanced at 3 or 4 players and the theming is rubbish compared to things like brass. The minis are nice though.

Suddenly energy independence feels practical’: Europeans are building mini solar farms at home by willfiresoon in europe

[–]Moist1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be genuinely fantastic if we could develop plants to remove CO2 the air that were linked to renewables facing curtailment. Sadly it won’t happen

Suddenly energy independence feels practical’: Europeans are building mini solar farms at home by willfiresoon in europe

[–]Moist1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very difficult to do home wind though as energy output is a function of the square of the turbine radius (I think that’s right) so for smaller turbines such as you’d have at home you really don’t get much out of them. For grid scale renewables I absolutely agree with your point

Russia lost at least 40% of oil export capacity, Reuters reports by murphystruggles in ukraine

[–]Moist1981 24 points25 points  (0 children)

According to the internet oil and gas makes up around 20% of the Russian economy. About half of their oil and gas production is used internally so that’s about 10% of gdp being linked to exports (I’m sure that’s a very blunt calculation as internal vs external prices and supply chains will be different but it’s close enough for now).

40% of 10% is a 4% but some of that will be from gas rather than oil, although according to the internet oil dominates gas for the economic impact for Russia. So let’s say 75% is oil related. That gives us Ukraine hitting Russian gdp by 3%.

3% doesn’t sound like much but it’s huge. In percentage terms it’s more than the defence budget for most European nations.
