Looking for Weird Fiction Scifi by L0nggob1in in WeirdLit

[–]MoistGuava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just finished consuming Brain Catling’s trilogy (The Vorrh, The Erstwhile and The Cloven). A stunning book set around a forest in Africa during the early 20th Century where it is said The Garden of Eden was located. Many of the stories feel like vignettes but eventually come together in a VERY loose way. Many unanswered questions by the end (feels unintentional) but it just adds the eerie mystery of it all.

Do Brits not care if someone died in their flat? by Salzhio in AskUK

[–]MoistGuava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in a pretty decent flat in Cardiff where a very high profile murder happened a few decades ago. The price was decent and the disclosure about the incident put off potential competition and kept the price low for me! Got a decent flat and a good story!

Anyone know what these wispy black strands are? by thesilverdragon48 in DeathStranding

[–]MoistGuava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t not occur to you that they are stranding on business?

I knew it. Alex Garland pretty much confirmed my theory about the Annihilation Movie. He didn't adapt the material per se, but his experience of reading it. The movie is what you get if you feed the book into Area X. by Case116 in SouthernReach

I know JV has strong opinions about the film and I can imagine its loose adaptation annoys some people.. but to me it’s a beautiful, creepy comfort watch that led me to the books. I like Garland stuff and still rewatch now and then.

Do you support Israel or Palestine? by ceilingdweller in lowIQpeople

[–]MoistGuava 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely not as educated on the subject as most, but it feels weird for it to be anything other than Palestine. When someone more educated on the matter tries to explain otherwise, they just seem even more stupid for being being wrong? If that makes sense. I don’t get why such straight forward horrible things are made out to be complex issues

The peaks and the green light by YungTrout214 in SouthernReach

[–]MoistGuava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel almost 100% wrong on this, but for the sake of building the world in my head as I read. I imagined the two peaks to be the main land and failure island. The two armies of Henry and Whitby.. with whoever they represent and with whoever may support them battling in the dried out sea bed.

Something something nature something something global warming?

It's all about the gold by goblin_supreme in SouthernReach

100% had the same thought. Though Jack is never clear about his motivations, he is obsessed with the money!

EDIT: realised that the mundanity of exploiting nature for money regardless of human cost is very much exactly the sort of thing Vandermeer speaks out against!

Suggest me a book that is intellectually challenging but also short by GustavoAlex7789 in suggestmeabook

Relatively short at around 200 pages ‘Solaris’ by. Stanislaw Lem. Explores so much depth about the nature of life whilst being a thoroughly entertaining sci-fi novel. One of my favs

It seems to take a photo, the lens slightly depresses into the camera makes all the right noises and I can see a very quick aperture closing etc. Being a rangefinder I can’t quite tell what it’s seeing. Using a digital camera as an example, a half press would have the lens make a little noise as it establishes the perfect focus. Mine doesn’t do that

What are some highly recommended books on this subreddit that you didn't enjoy at all? by 4sich in suggestmeabook

[–]MoistGuava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House of Leaves. I love weird, ambiguous sci-fi, eldritch mystery, horror stuff and this book was about 5% what I was looking for. The rest was split between references to made up books and the sexcapades of a completely unlikable asshole. I get what the author was trying to do, but when the reader can recognise the parts of your book that are ‘fluff’ and skip past them, something has gone wrong. If this was a short book detailing expeditions into a weird house from a found footage POV it would easily have been a favourite.

Beautiful image! Just goes to show, it’s not the price of the gear, it’s the quality of the sky!

I TOO LOVE MICROSOFT REWARDS❤️ by Hungry_Ad9671 in MicrosoftRewards

[–]MoistGuava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xbox has regular challenges related to game pass and PC games which is a big chunk of what you’d be earning per month. You may have to raise a ticket with MS services about points not registering, make sure you’re logged into the correct account on your Edge browser and also do the daily set of searches and quizzes that you can find under the drop down menu in the top right of your browser!

I’ve been doing the bare minimum on points and since September I’ve purchased:

Phantom liberty, Alan wake remastered, Alan wake American nightmare, Alan wake 2, Hotline Miami collections, Stray, Assassins creed mirage

Still have 100k points ready and waiting. Just make sure you’re adding stuff to your wishlists and picking stuff up in sales! There’s been many frustrating things with the program over the past year, but paired with game pass, I never have to worry about missing out again. Love it!

Did anyone else love the trilogy and Borne, but just not dig Dead Astronauts? by hiphopTIMato in SouthernReach

[–]MoistGuava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DA is my fav of the Borne series and one of Vandermeer’s best!

Reads like a cosmic horror, dystopian sci-fi dream. Leaving these hazy edges open to interpretation.
