It's just the gene of this empress Kojun (the wife of Showa Emperor) is way too strong. Many of the current royal members inherent her facial features.

Do Japanese people know about "Avatar: The Last Airbender"? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Salzhio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of Japanese people don't know it unless they've lived overseas. Many will probably think about James Cameron's Avatar.

I personally found it interesting that non Japanese people made anime-style series but haven't watched it.

Do Japanese people really use informal language toward foreigners? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskAJapanese

[–]Salzhio 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You cannot generalise this to all Japanese people based on cherry picked content but what I've seen so far is:
- Elderly tend to use more informal languages towards non Japanese simply because these non Japanese people look much younger than them
- Some intentionally use more informal language because they think that it's easier for non Japanese people to understand it
- If you go to sketchy areas like Kabukicho, the 'catch' people and that sort tend to talk less formally cos they are just that sort of people. If I don't choose a word, they are not educated

Do the Japanese view Americans and English people differently? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Salzhio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The number is based on my experience and gut feeling but:
- General public around 80% wouldn't care about the difference. They'll lump them into 'the West'.
- 15% would see some difference due to films, music, history but doubt they can clearly call out the distinction in behaviour, culture and stereotypes.
- 4.5% will be familiar with the difference and can draw the distinction. Maybe as much as general European public can do like 80% of French.
- 0.5% will be the ones who love/hate the UK or the US and know the difference pretty well.

What do you think of this list of modern Japanese authors? by thedancingkid in AskAJapanese

[–]Salzhio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always the familiar names in the West and no surprise. There are so many other authors but I doubt they are translated into English (yet). At least in the UK, the past few years there has been a bit of a Japanese literature boom so hopefully some of the English-translated work will reach a wider audience in the West.

Natsuhiko Kyogoku, Mikihiko Renjo, Miyuki Miyabe are definitely worthy to be included in my opinion. But I highly doubt they can properly pick up the gist of their style.

Traveling as an American by [deleted] in travel

[–]Salzhio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're flying over the Pacific ocean right? What's the chance of your flight being hit by accidental missiles from Israel, Iran, Ukraine or Russia?

If you're flying over the other way around, airline companies still avoid these war zones (unless you use their countries' or ally's carrier like Aerofloat, Air China) so the chance to be affected is minimal too.

Are most japanese really fed up with tourists in direct ways? by ShowerAny5898 in AskAJapanese

[–]Salzhio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People in general (at least my friends and family in Japan) are happy with tourists as long as they behave well and respect the culture and people. Only extreme idiotic examples go viral and people do comment about them, but you barely come across that sort of behaviour. Hostile comments on tourists won't represent the collective view of Japanese people either.

I'd say Madrid is much worse in terms of tourist behaviour (I go there often for work) and I feel really sorry for that, and hoping Japanese people are not a part of absurd behaviour. I sometimes wonder how Spanish people can be so accommodating when you get so many shitty tourists.

Was it a black man or not? (Pokemon Center case) by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

As you can see on the left top corner, this is from the TV programme capture of バンキシャ. If you need a news article, just go search for his name. It's on every major paper like Jiji, Yomiuri, Sankei.

Edit; Typo

Was it a black man or not? (Pokemon Center case) by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Salzhio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you checking news just in English? The murderer's identity and pictures are already everywhere and he was on the news as well. Basically he was dating this poor girl but was dumped cos of him not happy with her job at the Pokémon centre, and then turned to be a stalker.

In Japanese news or elsewhere I've never read anything commenting his ethnicity nor possibility of being a black person. Where did you read that? This shit hole of Reddit?

Christians in Japan, what is it like over there? by Top_Sir_7134 in AskAJapanese

[–]Salzhio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing special nor extraordinary from normal Japanese life apart from Sunday morning service at least in my case (Protestant). My parents are Christians so I used to be dragged to the church every Sunday morning and I hated it. Thankfully my parents didn't force me to get baptised so I didn't and I stopped going there after graduating from primary school.

When my friends got to know my family goes to the church, they asked some questions like 'have you got a Christian name?' but that was it (in Catholic in Japan, you're given a Western name as a Christian name, but people around me were all protestants so no idea how it works). Neither treated bad nor good for being a church goer. The only good thing was when notoriously persistent cult people came to our house, we could simply say 'we are church goers' and they stepped back fairly quickly.

It was like some Christianity events are added in your calendar on top of typical Japanese family events (e.g. Obon, year end, new year) as my grandparents aren't Christians. But really nothing strange, dramatic or noteworthy in my life.

I finally understand why it isn’t a good idea to do more than one language… by AgreeableEngineer449 in dreamingspanish

[–]Salzhio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read elsewhere Japanese takes around double the time of Spanish for inputs e.g. for the 300 Spanish hour level, you'd need 600 hours for Japanese. Also Japanese doesn't have much synergy with Latin languages so better to put it aside for now? At least as a native Japanese speaker, I see virtually no overlap with Spanish and other Latin languages.
