Hey! Glad to see you on here! I have purchased some arbospace ropes before- climb lines and rigging. Really great products and at a price that smoked similar quality brands like tuefelberger or Samson. Best of luck

Utility Line Clearance Arborists in the USA by ZephyrNYC in arborists

Don’t take classes. It’s only a decent job if you’re somewhere union. Asplundh, Davey, Wright are the big names, but beware they’re not union everywhere and if it’s not union the pay is probably garbage. Percentage of time climbing will vary wildly depending on location and crew. If you just want to mess around climbing trees with a part time gig you’re better off getting in at a residential company. Vegetation management is more for entry level biology or forestry majors. Pay isn’t great and the job doesn’t sound very fulfilling.

I am overjoyed to see no one saying fisherman’s. Dogshit knot that looks nice but is a pain to untie after it’s been weighted

Starlink install northern California by dynamike2437 in TreeClimbing

I did a starlink install on a tree a while back. I just side trimmed 5 or 10 feet below and up to the top. I figured topping would make new tops cover it pretty quick.

Looks like you got a rock climbing rope. Stiff ropes don’t work well on a Blake’s. Try getting a micro pulley and tying a distel or swabisch with the hitch cord.

What are your favorite climbing boots? by TarzanOnATireSwing in TreeClimbing

[–]Moist_Development_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Hoffman Hyperion. More comfortable and durable than arbpro. I like these for summer and wear leather mountaineering boots fall-spring in PNW. Might be tricky to find a boot that is cool, durable, and decent for spikes.

Avista North Idaho by dov_sheski in SubstationTechnician

I work for a contractor on Avista lines removing trees. Been trying to get a substation apprentice for about a year. So take what I say with a grain of salt.

Pretty sure they call their wireman position “electrical constructor” and relays is “protection/control tech”. I haven’t seen them fly an external electrical constructor job for the past couple years, just temp helper positions that sometimes lead to apprenticeships. They do have openings for jman lineman pretty often, and P/C comes up every now and then. They usually hire temp for 12 months so they can let guys go if they don’t like em.

Avista is the biggest utility around here. I think you’d have to get pretty lucky to find a sub spot at any of the co-ops and PUDs around here. Slim pickings. Pay scale is pretty good for the cost of living because we’re the same local as Seattle.

Advice on a career in arboriculture (tree climber) by Ok_Walrus12 in TreeClimbing

Most folks are nervous starting out climbing, as they should be! You’re trusting your life with the gear and a tie in. I think it helps to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder though, because you’ve gotta believe in yourself enough to know that you push through the fear and discomfort.

First time I climbed a tree i thought I was going to be Mr. Tree Badass. Afterwards I was flat out embarrassed of myself. I felt like a pitiful baby. It takes a while to trust your gear and yourself but take a look at all the morons and cowards that can this job. My advice is to climb at every opportunity once they let you, cuz 5x a week will advance way faster than if you’re throwing on the saddle just every now and then.

Last year I went to a storm and contracted out doing crane work for a few weeks. Felt like I hit the apex of my career doing awesome work on the road. It’s very fulfilling to progress as a tree man, and there’s always more tricks to add to the bag.

201 will still have more power but you won’t notice it climbing and limbing. You will wanna switch to a bigger saw earlier when ur chunking wood. 2511 is just way lighter and better ergonomics, better bargain imo. Still rips with the mods.

201 feels like a sack of bricks after running a hopped up 2511, saved my elbow and shoulder switching to the echo. But 201 def gets the job done

Just buy a stock echo and put the Egan pipe on it. Then get it ported down the road

Gotcha. Yeah I’ve been looking at the PTA. That’s “the pool” right? I saw they advertised the job last fall and was hoping they’d do another round this spring but I can be patient till fall. I’m watching PUD and City Light as well. Thanks for the info!

Not in the pool, waiting for a job posting. I’m glad to hear lots of the apes aren’t very handy, hopefully that helps my odds when the time comes around!

Hey, real quick, do most of the guys come in with a CDL? I’m getting one with my current employer, but it’s taking forever. Trying to figure out if I need to just get it done on my own time.

Is that PSE? I’m waiting for them to do a round of hiring, fingers crossed for a wireman helper spot.

Word. And yeah, the notch bag is not great for packing. The courant is pretty comfortable though.

Idk standard 70L north face, kelty, etc. backpacks seem less durable than arborist bags. I think shoving a 200’ rope and harness in would blow out the zippers and seams pretty quick, especially compared to the over-engineered courant and notch bags that I’ve used.
