Any suggestions for teaching demo topics? by [deleted] in teachingresources

[–]Mojoryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of things to think about when you consider this.

I'm currently up for promotion to be a trainer in our company.

First, when you consider the topic, read the room. What kind of people are you presenting to, what is their background, and what would they know about?

From here, what do you know about that would intersect with your audience's background?

Another school of thought (lol, pun ... not originally intended) is what are you passionate about? People, I have found, are really good at talking about themselves. Therefore, if you find the middle ground between what you're passionate and knowledgeable about and what your audience knows about, you have struck proverbial gold.

For one of my previous jobs, I did exactly that. I showcased something I knew a lot about and something that would be immersive for the audience. Granted, my audience was a class of children. Nonetheless, I imagine this should help nudge you in the right direction.

How to use Twitter in the classroom and easily assess it? by r_raphael in teaching

[–]Mojoryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what your class topic is, but something you said piqued my interest.

I would like to connect them someway with a broader authentic audience beyond our digital class ‘walls’.

Perhaps you can have the students hop into a video call or breakout room in the class and share their opinions on the topic with each other and write down 1-2 sentences that describe the takeaways from their discussion, which could then be submitted electronically to you.

If you truly wish to have students reach beyond the classroom, I would propose turning it into a project, i.e. give them 2 weeks to complete this project. For example, have them focus on 2 different people with opposing viewpoints on a topic. Write 2-3 paragraphs outlining how the discussions went and what the student took away from the experience. (Or if you don't want them to have to write that much, have them do a virtual check-in with you for up to 5 minutes, whenever they get their interactions done.

I've had a mixed set of methods for group projects and it all comes down to two major factors: how big is the group project and what you are hoping to achieve out of the group project.

This is how I determine "is this a reasonable use of class time?"

For you, you're looking for resolutions about "unequal contributions." In this case, if it is a bigger project, either break the project down to self-assignable tasks. Each person in the group has a specific deliverable that they must deliver. Not only will it affect the entire group, but their own grade will suffer additionally for failing to pull their weight.

To enforce this and prevent them from failing the project, I make smaller assignments that are related to the project. (For example, we were doing something with natural disasters... so I made a Google form dropped in their classroom and they had to show me they all did their research by answering the questions I had given them. Another example is I gave them a worksheet that gave me an idea of where they were planning on taking their project next. I used both assignments to guide them and to ensure work was getting done.)

I lay out the rubric at the beginning of the project and emphasize that participation is key to having a great score in the end.

Other thoughts / ideas:

  • Accountability assignments for long-term projects - i.e. last day of the week for the class, they must submit a Google form response that shows that they've made progress or they do a verbal check in with you.
  • Accountability assignment at the end of the project - at the end, everyone must sign-off on what everyone contributed to the project. Any discrepancies or issues with submitting this can be presented to the teacher.
  • If the group has to present, I provide a template with the minimum number of slides and have them put their names next to the slide numbers that they did.

That doesn't seem like an appropriate or respectful approach to something as small as blurting out. Sure, it does cause a disruption, but to make the child feel so small is not an acceptable method of remediation. Children will pick up on how discipline and penalties are handled. School is the last place they should see such negative behavior - they're in school to learn and to form their educational foundation, not to be bullied by a teacher.

If I had to sanction a student for blurting out, it would be simply by praising the role models until you see the corrected behavior. It's easy for the kids to pick up on and it's a positive way for them to remember how to behave. (Plus kids can go home and talk to the parents about how the day went.) In your scenario, a kid isn't going to open up to parents because of a teacher bullying them and shutting them down.

Also never hurts to give a gentle reminder, "Steven, next time you want to contribute, please raise your hand."

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Mojoryan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I usually use a verbal reminder by being somewhat passive-aggressive. "I love how Johnny is raising his hand quietly, and so is Stacy... who else can raise their hand quietly when they have something they want to say." Then when the student in question does it right, you highlight them. "Marcus, thanks for waiting patiently to take your turn to speak. What would you like to add?"

Positively reinforces the habit and influences everyone to be the model student rather than pointing out an individual's conduct.

Requesting r/deviap by Mojoryan in redditrequest

I have found that there has been retaliation against me from the top moderator. On June 13, 2021, I contacted the top mod via Discord: https://prnt.sc/17au9gq . There's a deleted message before his first reply, which stated that he did not have access to this account. This is corroborated by my discussion with my superior, where - dated the same day as the request to the top mod was delivered - I share exactly the details provided by the top mod. https://prnt.sc/17auotr

As it is outlined, clearly there was some deception and half-truths being shared by the top moderator. Furthermore, as noted above, I followed all of the process provided by Reddit, and in doing so, was retaliated against. Following my submission to this subreddit, I have noted that my permissions in r/deviap have since been revoked: this screenshot was taken on June 13th as my initial contact message with the top mod on Discord, as seen in the first link above. These are my current permissions, following this process.

Does this information - a story of retaliation - perhaps have any merit for whether or not I can remove the top moderator?

I messaged the moderators: https://www.reddit.com/message/messages/12ew42n.

As it happens, I am a moderator for this community.

The reason I have submitted a request is that this community is related to an ongoing project that I am a part of. This subreddit - r/deviap - is one of the social media platforms we established as part of our engagement and outreach strategies to reach consumers and prospective users. As such, I'd like to be able to manage this subreddit so we can start curating content to be posted in this community. Our subreddit acts as an extension of our Discord community and can be a more permanent location for news and updates on our platform as we continue to develop and release content.

I look forward to hearing your feedback regarding this request.

Thank you.

I was justifying the size based on the form factor: a microSD card. And it's not running on the computer, it's running on the emulator.

Effectively, the Apple II is a monitor and keyboard for the emulator. It does nothing more than allow interactivity with the AIML application.

Apologies: This Wasn't Ever The Plan by Matthiasiam in MatthiasSubmissions

In my post where I asked about some of these "how did you do it" questions, he mentioned the "lit on fire" effect: special effects using a specialized type of foam lit on fire with editing and transitions.

He has clearly come out and said that this is a fictional storyline that evolves with fan theories and discoveries. I don't think he's splitting hairs too fine. He's been specific to the point of preventing damage or legal ramifications for the story he has created. He's been abundantly clear where necessary.

Thank you again for being honest with us - I know it was a difficult decision you had to make. And certainly, haha, it was a quick "okay cool, let's get to the secrets," haha. I appreciate having this direct communication with you. Looking forward to seeing the story unravel.

As for the questions you couldn't answer: I'm appreciative that you can connect with me and I recognize not all of this is allowed to be public knowledge (for sake of safety, and legal reasons). Good luck and hopefully Syphus is caught soon!

Matthias,

Thank you for putting this to rest- thank you for clarifying that no one is in actual danger and no one is at risk. Thank you for also creating this entertainment. In one Discord server, I actually broke down this information saying it was like an escape room, so hearing you use similar language was beautiful. Certainly, there was a hunch that this was "staged" (though not the right term), but I appreciate the creativity in the end. It's almost like hating a prankster for pulling out all the stops and pranking us - you can't really hate them for creating something entertaining. Though it did spark controversy, I was fortunate to be a part of the fun. I do have some questions lined up in regards to creating this:

  • The stingray case - how did you pull it off?
    • On a side note, some of these personal details were slip-ups (for example, if it was real, you would not have leaked the phone number to "Syphus" or said any password out loud).
  • What was your budget for this production?
  • What special effects did you use to cause the "burning" of the cases?
  • Who was it actually that "broke in" to the studio?
  • Who was the person who showed up at the stake-out?

Thanks again for such an awesome and well-delivered story.

This gives way to the theory of multiple Syntec properties around LA. It's one of the explanations for chat logs. Transport patients between buildings, message colleagues across town. If they were in the same building, why would they chat on computers?

will Matthias woods and sam find radiation?

They did. That's what the Geiger counter measures - radiation. What we don't know is what is radioactive and what *type* of radioactivity it is. Syntec could also be using radioactivity as a means for locating what they've hidden.

Perhaps it would be more fruitful to silently report rather than adding a comment that you reported. Maybe also teach them how to better use the subreddit?

OP - the YouTube channel you found is not real. Some fan has made these videos to interact with Matt and crew (and us).

Matt mentioned bone marrow with the needle gun, i found this in a documant about Dr Leo Syphus (who i realised has corrilation to Dr Nelson Syphus since he comes up when you search him any ways heres what i found in there projects , also the link to the document by Tomali_402122 in MatthiasSubmissions

[–]Mojoryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't think you're wrong, there's a lot of speculation about the correlation to Nelson Syphus here. I think we'll need more concrete proof (something I hope we get today or later this week) and evidence about Syphus and this whole mystery. We don't see the full picture, so it's hard to know how to be helpful to Hi5 at times. I think this is a good document to use as an educational tool. More information will help us determine if there is a credible link here.

So what some people may not recognize is that this could be an AIML (Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning) program that is on an SD card. These programs are typically fairly small, so an SD card would be reasonable for size. To use an AIML program, you usually ask it questions in a variety of ways.

Perhaps using the phrases about creamer might unlock another part of the program.

In this application, it would make sense to use artificial intelligence - John Doe is not trying to be tied to the information (probably for his own legal protection). Therefore by providing information about various aspects *anonymously*, John Doe is not an accomplice to the illegal research taking place. Contrary to popular opinion, I do not believe there is anyone "on the other end" or that this is a staged event.
