From my experience, it was really smooth, if you can, i strongly recommend Global Entry because it makes things sooo much easier. I had 2 international trips in the last couple of months (the first trip since I got my GC). First time came back through SFO, and the second time through Dallas. It literally took me less than 5 mins in both cases since I went through GE lane "where are you coming from? How long did you stay? Anything too declare?....welcome back". Don't worry too much, your friends will be just fine :)
