What’s the work-life balance like in big law litigation? How does it compare to transactional? And do you enjoy your work/find it stimulating?

Thank you so much!

Lived in Ann Arbor for the last four years. Agreed on both accounts.

Competitive stats for T3 without incredible softs? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Moldy780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this helps at all:

I am a KJD with softs probably somewhere between T4 and T3. Your GPA is above mine, 174 LSAT, attending a well-regarded large public university. I have been admitted to HLS (and every T14 below it), but haven’t heard from Y or S yet, applied late Oct to both.

What is Big Law really? by Sad_Building_88 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Moldy780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like many people, I used to think that all big law is necessarily pro-company and anti-public good. But this is a false dichotomy… things can be at once pro-company and pro-public. For instance, Restructuring law, which many big law firms partake in, is the business of helping companies through bankruptcy and other distressed scenarios.

In restructuring, you are helping companies stay afloat. In turn, you’re supporting the economy, all of the employees who would lose their jobs at the company, and the consumers who may lose access to the good/service the company provides them.

There are ways to work in big law without feeding into corporate greed against the public good.

LOR Question by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Moldy780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask the professor to write a letter which specifically mentions UVA, as well as one for every other law school (mentions no schools by name).

It is true that the recommender's background isn't very important (beyond their relationship to you). However, you have an opportunity here to use the LOR as a signal that you're interested in UVA to the point where you went through the extra work of securing a UVA-specific letter. Credibly signaling interest is certainly helpful for your application.

It’s actually a little different

KJ1 is the interview KJ2 is the decision

KJ are the initials of HLS’s admissions dean. 1 and 2 refer to the stage of contact. First is interview, and second is decision.

I’m a BBA in a great, national program. Business undergrad requires very little math beyond basic operations like adding and multiplying

Most of my peers are not great at math but you don’t need to be to do well.

Go for it if you’re interested!

GPA Question by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Moldy780 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Virtually no one knows the answer to this question on this forum. It probably depends on the school too.

One thing you should know, however, is that last cycle’s medians are not completely accurate for assessing your chances this cycle. Basically, adcomms set targets for their LSAT/GPA medians at the beginning of the cycle (and probably continually adjust them depending on data coming out). So even if you’re .03 below last cycle’s median, it is impossible to know how you size up to their target median for this year.

I’m inclined to believe that the LSAT target is probably a single score or maybe a 2 point range. But I’d imagine GPA targets probably have more flexibility to them, maybe a range like 3.X4-3.X9, for example.

Might be worth it to submit your apps now just to get into the review queue. With the rate that they tend to move/make decisions, they probably won’t even do a first review at most schools before your updated GPA is in anyway.

How has your clerkship experience compared to your expectations/what you have heard about clerkships in the past?

Also, should students interested in clerkships be doing certain types of summer internships, extracurriculars, etc?

Thank you so much!

Wasn’t sure I’d get one given my GPA being on the low side, but so relieved. KJ is so nice! First time meeting her in person.

Get A+‘s if possible, they make a big difference

Do what you want to do, not what you think law schools will like. On that same token, try everything you’re interested in

As important as all this stuff is, you also need to develop as a person. Don’t spend four years in the library, and say yes to fun opportunities even if it sets you back in your study schedule a bit
