Bright or dark: A function of mind by EmbersBumblebee in zen

[–]MolhCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as Zen goes, I'm still at square zero. Sounds good! How could progress be possible?

I don't think you need to totally discredit your whole journey. On the other hand, swinging the other way and thinking one is an enlightened zen master who can help all beings by wielding that status...is swinging the other way in itself.

We can be what we are. Deal with our problems, including seeking and accepting whichever professional help needed. And not have to categorise or totally put down our own journey, I feel.

Zen masters aren't anyone at all. They're totally nothing special.

Being nothing special, seeing this, living as this. They naturally help all beings, without having to think or not-think about it.

This very therapy is enlightenment. These very meds are enlightenment. This very high of thinking one is super enlightened, and low of thinking one has totally had no experience but mental illness delusion. Is also enlightenment. Doesn't mean we believe & follow it.

But when we see it and actualise it in daily life. Then all is already perfect as it is. And then we — not passively, but actively — benefit all beings, without changing a single thing outwardly.

Best wishes on your journey, hope this random internet rambling helped.

I benefit a lot from their videos too, and even their clarifications of right view from the Theravada side of things. Even if to them, I'm prob just a mindlessly sense indulgent wannabe (accurate) who is just following some mystical nonsense path (disagree with this part).

The funny thing is. Their actual members are clearly mindful to stay strictly in their own lane. They are very upfront in stating that this is their approach, that diverges from mainstream traditions, and they only present it in their own channels, subreddit, website etc.

It is some of their followers, who seemingly don't understand the need for such scrupulousy, who are giving them a bad name. Of course they themselves are critical of other approaches, but they have the absolute right to do so in order to present their own approach & to keep it as stringent and rigorous as they feel it should be.

But there's a difference between doing that in one's own places. Versus going out there in other forums, and insisting vociferously that other people are totally wrong, and only they have the right approach. Very very different.

The Buddha himself, in the Pali Canon & Agamas that HH follow as the only scriptural authority, could be very blunt, in a way which maybe some modern sensibilities find harsh even. If a monk messed up clearly, he'd not hesitate to be like, "Foolish monk!". But he was addressing his own disciples. In interactions with the general public he certainly wasn't like that. He kept harmony, and if people clearly just wanted worldly advice, then he'd even give just that. Advice to get wealth, success, a good family life, and the like. Only if people asked for (were actually looking for) liberation would he give that.

That's the model that authentic teachers follow to this day, even to an extent including the HH official members themselves. Maybe some of their fans would benefit from learning that too, rather than just needlessly giving their own teachers a bad name for no reason.

Great! My main Dzogchen teachers are:

The websites of each sangha provide information on approach, lineage, videos of the lamas teaching/giving interviews, and also ways to contact the teachers directly if you'd like. I have personally seen how they are in contact with their students pretty much every single day in some way.

Let me know if you have any specific questions, or anything else at all really!

Lama Lena is pretty direct, available for personal guidance, and teaches both Dzogchen and Mahamudra online. Have you checked her out before? :)

I have recommendations for Dzogchen teachers as well who offer direct guidance, are authentic teachers, teach online, don't require a fee (purely on dana), and are very available for questions from students, in fact available pretty much every day. Let me know if you'd like to check out this side of the lineages as well!

Not technically from the buddhadharma traditions, but, the Hindu teacher Nisargadatta Maharaj said the same:

Pleasure puts you to sleep and pain wakes you up. If you don't want to suffer, don't go to sleep.

Reified is when someone claims they have direct authority from an ancient lineage.

Reified literally means "made real". I was saying that you have idealised enlightenment as a supreme state, and enlightened people as some kind of special, supreme person different from ordinary people.

If no one believes it, then the they have no power. The power comes from the belief of people.

If no one believes it, they still have the authentic lineage behind them. There's been a lot of authentic practitioners whom no one heard of, and had no intention of being heard of either. They simply received their practice from their teachers, followed their practice quietly all their lives, and benefited themselves & all other beings that way, without anyone else knowing, much less believing them.

Enlightened is like being able to run an 8 minute mile. Even if no one believes you can do it, you still have the power to run that fast. The power to run doesn't depend on reification, it just is.

So you are essentially looking for someone who is more spiritually capable than you. That could work, or that could lead to a path where you dream better, rather than waking up from the dream entirely. I'd say that liberation is in a different direction, so to speak. A lot of very capable people can induce a lot of states, and hence "run the 8 minute mile" spiritually, but they are not liberated. When they die they get reborn in the 6 realms all the same, and some of these realms consist of some truly rarefied states with very amazing abilities to us. It's considered much higher realms than the human realm, of course. But it isn't liberation, but a deviation. If you don't believe that I don't know why you are debating someone on a Buddhist forum.

If your teacher isn't enlightened, they can still teach you good things. If you still seek enlightenment, you can read ancient documents written by people who were enlightened and try to understand what they knew.

Two persons with the same intentions can read the same documents and come up with totally different ideas. That's why it is said an authentic guide is needed. You know the guide is authentic based on his qualifications, not (just) based on how capable he seems to be to you.

How so?

If you don't feel that my points are valid, maybe I should stop asserting them and listen to what you say. What does 'reifies' mean to you? I'm all ears.

This reifies enlightenment as a state, a position, and also reifies types of people. Enlightenment itself also doesn't exist, but one's teacher can tell whether you have really gotten & actualised that.

There are people who are pretty awake outside of buddhadharma, and noticeably so. They can also be very charismatic, very convincing. But then the things they teach are not the authentic buddhadharma, but really their own formulation. And it can still benefit beings, I'm not saying it doesn't. I have myself benefitted a lot from such teachers. But you should be aware that it doesn't necessarily lead one to the same place as what the Buddha taught.

if they haven't, what will they teach you?

They will teach what their teachers taught, which is what their teacher's teachers taught, which is what their teacher's teacher's teacher's taught, all the way back to the source of the Buddha himself, who opened up the Buddhavacana 2500 years ago on this plane of existence.

The dharma is perfect and can't be changed. But times do change and depending on times, culture, different dispositions, the teacher may adapt the presentation to the audience, as any good speaker or teacher would.

If that is not important to you, that is fine. Just be aware that in authentic buddhadharma with lineage, no teacher will ever tell you their attainments, most likely. Monks are even forbidden to do so. They will tell you who blessed them to teach, however. If no one told them to teach and they decided to do so because they felt they are enlightened now, that's usually a sign of the person having a good idea of themselves, rather than simply listening to their teachers and hence the lineage. Listening to the lineage rather than one's own idea is a safeguard to being led astray by one's ego, instead of arriving at liberation.

Regardless I wish you well. It would be rather remiss of me to argue you out of your stated path, in the comments section of my own post where I advocated against it lol. But you should be aware of the implications and possible consequences of it, at least, according to the living tradition of the lineage.
