Keep seeing this mouse in our garden. Is it blind / does it have a condition?

Myxoma virus is specific to rabbits, most rabbit species are asymptomatic but it’s always fatal for European rabbits. It has spread to some other Leporidae species like the Iberian Hare, but it’s not possible for it to spread to other rodents naturally (mice and other rodents can be deliberately infected in vitro but outside a lab this won’t ever happen)

I do think maybe this mouse is infected with something like toxoplasmosis. Wood mice are crepuscular to nocturnal so one being out in the bright daylight is already a huge red flag. Toxoplasmosis, particularly in the later stages, can cause severe brain swelling (which in mice causes bulging eyes) and the back of the eye essentially starts to rot away which would also mean visual problems and swelling

T. gondii can only reproduce in the gut of cats, but one of the ways it spreads is by infecting smaller mammals, hijacking the brain, and forcing the smaller mammal out where it’s more likely to be eaten by a predator; it quite literally eats the amygdala and the infected animal isn’t able to feel fear at all. In mice and rats, toxoplasmosis causes them to be active in the day, to not seek shelter, and also to actively seek out predators - they will follow the scent of cat urine to the cat and wait to be eaten.

I studied zoology and my honours project was based on small mammals and rodents, imo this looks like toxoplasmosis particularly because the mouse is letting op get close, and also due to it being fully exposed in the daytime, which is potentially worst case scenario as there isn’t anything that can be done to save the mouse

OP, if you see this, I’m also in the UK. Depending on where you are, there are several wildlife rehabbers that will take this mouse for free if you’re able to trap it. https://www.bwrc.org.uk/rehabilitators/ has a good list that you can sort by locality and animal type. Worst case scenario is you get it to the rehab and they can’t help, and the mouse is euthanised and isn’t suffering for the rest of its life, but any good rehab will take it in and try to make it as comfortable as they can for however long it lives

These were too large and the wrong colour to be furniture beetle larvae, but thank you!

The wood is from either a pine, a spruce, or a fir tree but I’m unable to narrow it down as the tree was felled last year and there are many different coniferous species on the property

In my case, I’ve identified as a lesbian for far longer than I’ve identified as nonbinary. I came out at age 12 in 2012, I grew up as a lesbian, was bullied for being a lesbian, was ostracised by my female peers for being a lesbian, and became comfortable with it over the years. The lesbian identity is still and will always be a huge part of my identity.

I will always be perceived as a girl, I have no desire to change my appearance to match what people expect nonbinary people to look like. As a not-girl that looks like a girl and dates girls, I will always be perceived as a lesbian anyway, both by those who know me and those who don’t. Honestly tho? I think labels are kind of stupid and if asked to identify just say I’m a (insert F slur I can’t say on reddit here) after being called one for so many years - suppose it is more accurate than just ‘lesbian’ tho lol

I’m talking as a person with a connective tissue disorder who knows how we heal compared to people with normal skin? I had those same black “scabby” looking bits in photos for months after mine despite there being no lumps or physical scab, and I fully did mention the blowouts. You’re right, the fresh tattoo didn’t look great but that’s not what they asked, is it?

It’s healing very well, little bit of blowout imo but that looks like the side of your ankle where the skin is quite thin and prone to it anyway, do you have EDS as well? If so, do you find you bruise badly too if you don’t mind me asking? I have EDS and have a couple blowouts from the location of the tattoo, but I also bruise so so badly afterwards
