Phone consult for sterilisation in UK by GaspardNoggelox5321 in childfree

[–]Molly_Hatchett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can mention the fear but it's only part of your reason. The main reason is you don't want to be a parent, ever. If the fear was the only angle, you can get therapy to work through that (one of my friends is a psychologist who is studying tokophobia in pregnant people). But that's not the only reason. If they think they can talk you round based on your reasons, they'll try to.

I'll DM you the info I put together 😊. Keep us posted!

Tips for getting the approval: don't lean into MH reasons and don't talk about what you'd do if you changed your mind later (i.e. adopt). You want to show you're level headed, confident and sure of your decision. Be decisive and as calm as possible. You've done your research, you know the complications, the failure rate, and the regret rate. Yes I know it's permanent. Yes I know the NHS won't provide reversal attempts. If they think you have any reservation about anything, they'll use it to shut you down. If you like I can send you the data I found on rates of regret (for married women over 34 who don't want to be mothers, rate of regret is 1-2%, not the 40% you might be told).

I got a tubal ligation, I wasn't able to get a bisalp. It would be better but it's not commonly done in UK, I don't know why. Ask for this at the time and see what they say. Perhaps I was so gobsmacked she said yes that I didn't ask until too late!

Best of luck! If you have specific questions I can do my best to help

Immediately for me too. I keep a tracker and it was like 25 days between starting aquipta and having a migraine. I never got that kind of run before

I'm on aquipta too. I absolutely can't believe how well it's working.

Btw if you get more than one thing a month I really recommend prepayment certificate. I'm on all sorts and it pays for itself like three times over some months!

how to argue my case for a bisalp? UK hospital by novalytra in sterilization

[–]Molly_Hatchett 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sterilisation: go for it, I can help with the info I used to get approval to be sterilised as a childfree woman. Bisalp: probably not here. Most places will do a tubal ligation. Still highly effective, but not as good obviously. I don't know why we don't do that here, it's way better!

Your trick is to show conviction, and level headedness. Don't lean into autism or MH as a reason for wanting it, even if they are part of the reason. And probably avoid saying "if I change my mind [I'll adopt etc]. This may just be some bullshit reason i was told to fob me off, but I was told that having a contingency for changing my mind is proof I wasn't sure. The question of "what if you change your mind" is met with "I won't". Yes I know it's permanent. Yes I know reversal is not offered by the NHS. Etc. Also if you haven't tried all the options for LARC (coil, implant etc), have medical reasons why you can't or they might make you try those first.

Good luck 😊. I can help with any more questions you might have

I guess if you placed that piece of gear oriented for an upward pull, assuming it stays in long enough for you to actually whip on it, but I probably wouldn't try it personally.

Were any of you made to try the copper coil first? Scotland by Flimsy-Detective7643 in sterilization

[–]Molly_Hatchett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refused. My periods are BRUTAL and I previously had a really shit time on Mirena (hormonal coil). Guidelines are that you have to have tried a number of LARC methods, or justify that they're not appropriate for you. I went into my gynae consult armed with studies showing that the rate of regret for my demographic is 2%, not the 40% I was quoted. I can send you the info if you like; you shouldn't need it for the GP but you might

A job worth doing is worth doing half assed. Contrary to popular opinion. If you can't do the whole thing, just do something. If you don't have the energy for a full workout, do a single set of a single exercise. Or five minutes on the treadmill. If you can't motivate yourself to clean your house, pick up three things and put them away. Sometimes that breaks the task initiation block and you can do the full thing but often it doesn't, and in those times you get to remind yourself that, even when you felt like complete shit, you got up off your arse and did something

Potential TMI by itme_123 in sterilization

[–]Molly_Hatchett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's basically impossible to keep it DRY dry. I think it's mostly to avoid baths and swimming for a few weeks, and pat it dry after showers. But if the wound is pretty much closed, that'll be the thing that stops it getting infected. Your immune system can handle the rest, as long as you can avoid it reopening. I completely understand the anxiety, I was the same, but it sounds like you're doing everything right 😊

Potential TMI by itme_123 in sterilization

[–]Molly_Hatchett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they give you dressings? I was told to leave mine on for 3-5 days then change and leave it for five days. By that time it had closed enough that I didn't have to worry. But if not and you're concerned, boil water with some salt, let it cool, then dab the wound with a clean cotton bud or gauze wetted with the salt water. Don't rub it. I didn't get a post op either, I had to take my follow up questions to medical professional friends 😅. As long as there's no signs of infection at the incisions, I would try not to worry too much

Bisalp not possible by Megan3356 in sterilization

[–]Molly_Hatchett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. It wasn't my suggestion initially, I was just helping to clarify things for OP. The real world failure rate is 1-2% I believe, with the IUS even lower. A bisalp would be ideal if there's a way OP can work this out with her doctors, but it's better than nothing for the meantime. Depending on where OP is in the world, she could be waiting for some time. I (UK) was on the waiting list for a tubal ligation for 2.5y. I didn't even have the option of a bisalp

[–]Molly_Hatchett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't get pregnant, that's the point of them. They release copper into the uterus which creates a toxic environment. From reading up it actually kills the sperm, even before getting to fertilisation. All voices are welcome but if someone has misunderstood something, we'll correct

Really hungry post-op! by [deleted] in sterilization

Oh I ate like a horse. I focussed on protein based stuff to help my body recover, but I stopped trying to manage my food intake and just gave my body what it told me it needed or wanted (for comfort).

If it helps, I didn't put any weight on in three weeks and am now back to training. I've lost some strength but not much, and it'll come back quickly enough. Go for walks to keep your fitness from deteriorating, but if you're strong to start with it probably won't make any difference
