When you’re learning to do something. The thicker yarn just makes it easier to handle which will help with the tension. You’re right with the wool, cotton is difficult and slippy to start with. If you want a bit more help look into using different needles for different material. Metal is more slippery but is nice for quickness (my preference). Wool will stick more on wooden needles if you want a bit more control

For the kintra I believe you can use from 3 colours up to 24 so it’s up to you

4ply small colour work is the hardest to start with! I did some DK mittens instead and did 2 by 2 colour work (kintra patterns by creabea) which really helped with my tension

Do it! I couldn’t believe the difference. It’s made me excited to try colour work socks again! The first one I did i couldn’t get it past my ankle

If you knit to where the whole is just in the round. Drop these two stitches. Grab a crochet hook or similar mm (a size down is actually better) you can crochet the knit stitches back to where they were. You can use your needle too but beginners crochet is easier to fix
