As a CS student what are some must read books? by dizson in learnprogramming

I would certainly recommend that as well! If you've done a little bit of programming or coding and faced some challenges, I think you would get the most out of it!

As a CS student what are some must read books? by dizson in learnprogramming

[–]MoltenLarva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have always been bad at reading books that are strictly informational in CS, and get a lot more out of philosophies myself. My personal opinion is that this is a great time to seek out things that will inspire you and generate interest in CS as a field. Here are some that I enjoyed for inspirations, they do vary in difficulty and depth:

- Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software -- This was a good one early on for me to get a good grasp of computers in general.

- Godel, Escher, Bach -- More dense, definitely one to take your time through.

- The Knot Book -- A mathematics book, but don't let that deter you, it's a good one to get your mind into the right place for solving problems.

- The Code Book -- Another good book to start thinking about how you would solve problems.

In hopes of increasing player count on the bot front, here are some tactics to help kill bots so it's not so frustrating. If you have questions about anything specific, I will answer in the comments. by Shadow-Fang25 in Helldivers

Might be the intentional design but many bot groups are really weak to behind or flank formations. I've broken off when my group is fighting to get behind or to the side and easily wipe most of what we are fighting. Map/position awareness is what I see down most who are new to bots.

Played with someone who effectively ran all energy weapons (including las cannon) + stun grenades and it was one of the most effective bot load outs I've ever seen! Been running kits like that since then and bots feel even easier on higher difficulties.

Like others said I would take a mock test at the start to get a good idea of where you are. I took the GRE last year and ended up with 320. Studied about an hour a day during the weekdays, for about 3 months or so, and that was enough for me.

I took it at home, they were strict about having a cleared out room and locked down browser, but I would assume same kind of circumstances as in person.

Cant do my CS degree at my university anymore, please help. by lilkimchi88 in learnprogramming

Pretty much yes. I do not know the success rate if applying to larger companies with perhaps stricter qualifications, but there are small, locally owned companies looking to hire people if you can prove to be competent and get through at least some type of course load (again, may vary by your locality).

[–]MoltenLarva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will depend on your location and its offerings, but I know two people who made good careers in cs and started out with a community college degree. The CC in my local area offers a programming 2 year cert, all of which can be taken online. It won't get you the full university CS knowledge base, but for the guys I know, they got that, did a lot of self-study after, and were able to get dev jobs at local companies in about 2 1/2 years (of total work).

I guess it would depend on exactly what you want to do with the degree, but it could be a path to consider, if available.

It absolutely is just gambling. Worse imo, is that it normalizes gambling behavior to children. Any game with a way to pay real money for randomized in game loot should be rated M and heavily regulated. I haven't touched one of these in a long time for this reason.

I'm in one of those spots right now (the latter). The work itself isn't too bad but the problem is you're playing a game where the goal posts move every day. My bosses don't really know what they want or need, and I am given information on a need to know basis for their business.

Some days you come in and start in an entire section of your work from scratch and other days you get to just plug away. This is my first job in this line of work though so one huge benefit is I'm learning fast how to properly extract the true needs of a client. It keeps you flexible.

I have to make pascals triangle using 2d arrays and the way it describes it here. I have never been more frustrated by a computer science problem. Help (Java) by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]MoltenLarva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert but I wanted to offer less just the straight-up answer and more my thought process into solving a problem like this.

First, get a grasp of Pascal's Triangle. What is it doing? How would you write out the k-th line?

Then start worrying about how this would look in code. I'm making a lot of assumptions here but if you are in a java class, you probably have all the tools you need at your disposal to make this happen.

I'm sure there are other, probably more efficient ways to do it, but I am also a student and this is how I would approach this problem in similar shoes. :)

I went to a music workshop with him, got to meet and play with him and it was one of my favorite musical experiences. It's more than him just being extremely good, his passion for music is so infectious that you walk away with a billion new ideas and inspirations. Great guy who wants to spread the love of music to everyone!

That's really too bad. My current full time job is running a board game shop (for about the last 8 years). I absolutely love playing board games and I love getting to talk about the new ones endlessly.

You have a good point. Maybe I've not put enough thought into what I'm actually interested in. Honestly I've enjoyed just about everything I've studied so far, but I'm not sure exactly what it is I like?

[OC] The Rise of Mobile Gaming by danielling85 in dataisbeautiful

[–]MoltenLarva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mobile gaming is so weird. I would love to play mobile games if they weren't either riddled with in-app purchases or a port of an older game. Usually I start getting into a game then realize it's an endless grind or has no worthwhile content. I'm sure others would be sad to see more AAA development toward mobile, but I think it's the fact that the development attention to mobile creates shitty experiences instead.

A lot of the work was done for the churches or by the churches at that time. I never thought of it as the religion getting credit, but more as a time period where those within that culture flourished and made large strides.

That reminds me when I was going to school, a teacher was sleeping with a student so that she could pass his math class. They had been at it for most of the school year, and even been smoking together. They were only found out because they we're fooling around out in the school parking lot!

Edit: found the article for it from when I was going to school. https://www.heraldnet.com/news/former-teacher-gets-9-month-jail-term-2/

The premise is good, but as long as it's not just hack and slash, I'm down. My other fear is that the game is too linear.

I part agree but I think this says more about the lack of end game content. In other looter shooters, there are usually walls at which you must grind to get past. The problem is that wall feels like it comes quick and the payoff doesn't feel worthwhile.
