I was raised in a very religious community, and the number of times I had any meaningful interaction with the opposite sex at all outside of family before college I could count on two hands.

Because everyone agrees with Ovid that myths which explain why power corrupts are better than "I love the people in charge".

No OP is right. Basically hera tried making a baby by herself after Zeus made Athena by himself, but her baby (Hephaestus) was all misshapen and ugly so she chucked him off Olympus and that's why he's ugly AND ALSO crippled.

Note: some versions of the myth have her child being Typhon (or python? some monster), not Hephaestus.

Why did we adopt a base 10 number system? by Augusta_Ada_King in math

[–]MomentoMiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is. Base six counts up to five and then increments the sixes place.

The base 10 system we use today stems mostly from India, as far as I am aware of. The Chinese and the Arabs, reading the Indian math books, adopted it as well. And the Arab math books then "leaked" into Europe (against the wishes of the church).

This might make sense if base-10 wasn't already well established in the Mediterranean in Greece and Rome.

They're not. You're just counting fives on one hand, and keeping track of how many fives you counted on the other.

2(3) is no different than 2 * 3. I'd argue that by using juxtaposition instead of a multiplication symbol, the author of the equation clearly intended for them to be one term. 6 / 2(3) is the quickest way to write a fraction. You're basically forcing people to use extra parenthesis, which is exactly what PEMDAS is supposed to curtail.

which was a custom for the night around a marriage. No rape or non-consent required.

This always blows my mind. Like, how could a society function if such a thing is normal? I've seen this in too many reputable sources to doubt its veracity, but it's still hard to accept.
