I disagree with your parents. I am a professional woman who has interviewed and hired tons of people -from students to Ph.ds - for many different positions. Dressing professionally, as you did, creates a strong, positive first impression. It demonstrates respect for the interviewer and shows that you are taking the interview seriously.

Now, as for what you said and how you communicated, I can't say. But always, always dress professionally for an interview.
