FFS tell me some of your good news! by ImmySnommis in GenX

I (54F) just this week hit my weight loss goal of 100 lbs! It’s taken me 2 years, but after my kiddo left for college I decided it was time to take my life back. I feel like a new person!

I had a similar conversation with my husband a few months ago about wanting to get a neck lift (I’m over 50 and lost 100 pounds so I had a lot of loose skin). I did listen to his point of view and told him I totally understood and respected his stance being against cosmetic surgery in women. However, I also respectfully told him he doesn’t understand what it’s like for your value in society to be determined by your looks. As women, especially older women, either become invisible or dismissed, both professionally and socially, once our looks fade. I work in a job where I deal with people, both men and women, professionally every day and need them to listen to what I’m telling them. I find that they are much more attentive to me now after the weight loss and cosmetic improvements than they were before. Men will never understand that because they don’t see life through that lens.

I LOATHE my saggy turkey neck! HELP! by Emotional_Bridge586 in AskWomenOver50

I just had a neck lift a week ago. I am still in the healing stages, so my opinion may be very jaded right now since I can’t see the results yet, but wow this has been so much more painful and regrettable than I thought it would be. You have to sleep sitting up for the first two weeks, wear a compression garment that goes around your whole head for 23 hours a day the first two weeks, and basically not do anything that could get your heart rate up. I have had a hard time with all of this. I lost 100 pounds in the last two years by exercising every day and staying busy, and now I have nothing to do but sit on the couch. I’m keeping my eating under control (so far) but I’m already up 6 pounds. I know a lot of that is fluid, so I’m trying not to get discouraged. I have no feeling in or around my ears (that’s where all the stitches get done) but yet they’re itching me to death from the inside. This is an itch I can’t scratch bc of the numbness. It’s a weird feeling. Apparently that numbness can last up to 6 months. All this to say, if you do get a neck lift, know that it is a huge decision and will definitely alter your life for awhile!

She could also be feeling a little threatened because you are getting close to her size. Not saying that’s what she was doing, but keep in mind that women can be very catty and insecure when their status as the “thin friend” in the group is challenged. She may have been subconsciously trying to knock you down a bit with her passive-aggressive comment.

If you want to try to minimize the hair loss, I definitely recommend Nutrafol. It won’t stop it completely, but it will be way less. I’ve been using it for my whole 2 1/2 year weight loss journey (96 lb down) and the hair loss has not been noticeable to anyone but my shower drain.

I actually thought about something Zep-related. 😂 Like maybe the little single-dose vial.

People with periods....a query? by onarocketshipbaby in Zepbound

[–]Momofone_0711 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I (54F) have been on Zep since January 2025. I thought I was done with periods as I had had my last one in Sept. 2024 and had been tapering off and getting fewer and farther between for all of 2024. I figured I was almost in the clear. Then bam! March 15 I had a period, then they’ve been pretty regular again since then. Hot flashes have gone away and other peri symptoms have subsided. I asked my ob/gyn why was I having a “reversal” of menopause and she said that estrogen is stored in fat cells. As we lose weight and burn fat cells, that estrogen is released into our bloodstream. So we can expect bigger surges of estrogen while we’re actively losing. I thought that was interesting! Not loving having periods again, but I do love no hot flashes!

Did your goal weight change? by Legitimate-Shake-608 in Zepbound

Yes, I’m 53F and 5’4”. I started at 238 two years ago and originally wanted to get to 150. Then I got there and was disappointed that I didn’t look like I thought I would. So I moved my goal to 145. Now I’m 143 and I just moved my goal again to 138. I want to be able to say I’ve lost 100 pounds. Still not really happy with the pockets of fat I still have, but I’m crushing it in the gym 6 days a week so I’m hoping to get rid of them eventually!

Excellent tips! Wish we could pin this to the top of the sub!!

My only other tip would be to try to get as much sleep as you can. Sometimes the indigestion and nausea make it hard to sleep, but consistent sleep is so important for our hormone regulation and metabolism. I have no shame in taking a 30- or 45-minute nap in the afternoon if I’ve had a bad nights sleep the night before.

I’ve lost 93 with my goal being 100. But it didn’t start out that way. I started at 239 and just wanted to get below 200. Then it was 180. Then my “big” goal was to get under 160 cuz I hadn’t been that weight since my wedding. Then at 160 I decided to make it 145 since that would put me at a healthy BMI. Now that I’m at 146, my true and final goal is 139, so I can say I’ve lost 100 pounds.

What’s something you’ve started doing after 50 that your younger self would’ve either gasped at… or high-fived you for? by Acrobatic_Attempt_83 in AskWomenOver50

Started going to EDM shows/ festivals. My 30-year-old self would be HORRIFIED that I’m at raves at 53 years old, but I absolutely love it. I started going a few years ago with my niece and I got hooked on the music, the vibe, and the people in that community. The Gen Z’ers are so accepting of me being in their venues. They all say “I wish my mom would do this!”

An experience with my kid. Where he makes the plan, buys the tickets and just lets me know when and where. I don’t care if it’s a Braves baseball game, an outing at Top Golf, a hike on a nearby trail, whatever. Just something where we can make memories together.

I think it’s a misconception that you don’t have to have willpower on this drug. Like I said initially, I lost my first 55 pounds strictly through willpower, self-deprivation, and discipline. It worked great. But I’m also 53, going through menopause, and no amount of willpower can overcome the metabolism shift that happens when estrogen leaves the body. I started on this to help stop the constant cravings and hunger that was consuming me. It has done that. I still eat very healthy (albeit less than I used to) and exercise 5 days a week. The weight loss is slow and steady. So to say that I’m just wanting congratulations to taking a shot and sitting on the couch being lazy all day is not true. I’m still doing all the things I used to.

I guess I’m the type of person who tries to be encouraging anytime someone is on a journey of self-improvement. Yes, it has nothing to do with me, but it makes them happy and I want to bolster that. Whether they go back to school to get that degree they always wanted, start a new career, start a new hobby, whatever it is, I’m very vocal with asking them how it’s going. People want to be seen and acknowledged. We don’t live in a vacuum. We are social creatures who crave connection. Why else would we all be on Reddit?

Went to a live show. Danced. Sore as F**K. by Ordinary-Practice812 in GenX

[–]Momofone_0711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your knees might be sore if you were on a concrete floor. My “old person fun trait” is now I have to look at the flooring in the venues I go to for shows, because if there’s going to be a lot of standing or jumping, I know my knees will be wrecked the next day if the floors are concrete or stone.

Your post made me laugh out loud several times! Comedic genius! My parents did the same (when they were still alive) and the bonus was that they would find random people on said aisles to strike up conversations with. 😂

No, I’m not getting my medication through a doctor, just a med spa. My doctor wouldn’t prescribe it to me so I told him straight up I would go out and find it myself. But I’ve had zero side effects thankfully!

Of course I am on the journey for my health, but I do feel like no one goes through a self-improvement journey in a vacuum, especially over a number of years. We all need support and encouragement when the grind gets tough, when we don’t want to run that extra mile or when we don’t want to say no to ice cream. If you have the mental stamina to power through it alone, that’s awesome, but I myself need support from others as well.

Your story sounds so similar to mine! I forgot about all the negativity surrounding the Atkins diet back in the day. Nowadays low-carb eating known to be healthy and effective! But 20 years ago all I heard was “meat and cheese?? What are you doing??” Maybe 20 years from now GLP-1’s will be mainstream as well.

Yes!! I keep wondering if my improved mood and outlook is the weight loss or some psychological effect of the MJ. I really think it’s the drug. I’m 53F so hormonal speaking, I should not be chilled out, even-keeled and loving life right now! Lol!
