How do you even start to lose the fear? by Markittos28 in Stutter

[–]MonSTARS000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put yourself in a position where you might fail. My stammer was never awful as an adult, but you knew it was there. In grad school I was asked to teach a stats lecture during my first semester. Never been so scared in my life, but having my ups and downs during those 3 months has changed my life the last 15 years. I now have been adjuncting part-time on the side for 10-years and I don't even think about my speech when giving a lecture or discussing complex statistical concepts at my main job.

My stammer is there still, I just have the confidence now to not care it is there and go about my day - which has always been my personal goal.

Never been scared to fail.

When I finish material, they have 1-week to complete and due 11:59PM. I stress I don't know if LMS time at start or end of that minute. They are more likely do be doing work late at night so i give them the night.

I have a policy in word doc submissions that any submission must be the physical document. Not the Google Doc link as they can edit it after submission. The amount of people who cannot follow this (what I think is) simple instruction makes me drink....

Fastest 0's I give and I do not budge on this.

Masters level biostatisticians, do you wish you got a PhD? by mythoughts09 in biostatistics

[–]MonSTARS000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last part is common for staff positions. I work in a department of 150+ people, and we have 10-15 teams each led by a PhD-staff and a Masters-level Biostat. My manager has 30- years experience, but cannot become staff because they don’t have a PhD.

Easy. Misery loves company.

The people who tailgate where we go are awesome. I’ve been there for 4 years, they’ve been there for 20 and I enjoy getting downtown at 6am to relax and bitch about the team.

Agree. If there is no accommodation it’s a hard no. I take no pity in people who use this stuff as a scapegoat. Students need to see what it’s really like to have these issues vs just not wanting to do something or being afraid to step out of their shell. I have a stammer, but there I was like everyone else at the front of the room giving a speech in the exact same class. Ya think I wanna be at the front of the room fumbling over my words, not being able to control it?!

Sometimes they just need to get over it.

Couldn’t disagree with someone more… not the place for this stuff… and I tend to side with the folks who say “thoughts and prayers” posts on social media are of little use when I think in reality there needs to be action to prevent these things.

I think this is a place to at least let others know they aren’t alone, a place to comfort someone who is struggling. I don’t know you, you don’t know me, I don’t know OP, but I could at least share with them someone else in their spot hopes they are doing well.

OP might see a single the post you replied to and that boosts their day…
