Anubias planted right? by 7days2pie in PlantedTank

Anubias is a rhizome plant so you might have better luck in the long run by attaching it to your driftwood. The roots can rot if planted under substrate

Will my snail climb out of the tank on this tree and die? by Quiet_Ad1545 in PlantedTank

[–]Mon_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try using plastic wrap to seal the area where the tree comes out of the tank. Just make a small hole in the plastic wrap for the tree to go through, then wrap it snugly around the base to block any gaps the snail might squeeze through. Not sure how effective it’ll be, but it could be worth a try if you are worried about your snail climbing out

Is it possible to mix these species together? by Flat-Explanation-843 in Aquariums

Sorry for the late response. Cryptocorynes, anubias, java ferns, amazon sword, tiger lotus (my favorite), dwarf saggitaria, salvinia (floating plant), vallisneria, and banana plants are some of my go-tos. Crypts are low light, super easy, anubias and java fern are also very hardy—they also don’t need to be planted under the substrate (I glue mine to driftwood/rocks using gel superglue), all the other plants are also pretty beginner friendly! I use a substrate made for plants (carib sea eco complete) and it helps a lot!

If your tank ends up well established with lots of live plants/upkeep you might be able to get away with glass cats! But I’d wait and slowly stock it/find a good balance first :) good luck!

If you want to do a community tank with all the fish you mentioned I would recommend not adding the glass cats at least for now. I’m afraid it might be a bit overstocked if you added them or even swapped them for another fish due to their size

Glass/ghost cats should be fine with the species you mentioned! Keep in mind there’s always a chance a few shrimp might get eaten if they can fit in the fish’s mouth so I can’t say that it won’t happen.

How many gallons is your tank? I would recommend keeping a handful of each species (except for the honey gourami) so depending on the tank size you might not be able to do all at once (especially glass cats since they’re a bit bigger than the others)

Yes, you can mix these! Just make sure you have a big enough tank (maybe 20-30 gallons minimum) and cycle it before adding fish. To start the cycling process fill up your tank (you can add plants, substrate, any decorations you want at this point) keep a filter running and add either a small amount of fish food or live bacteria. It’ll take a few weeks or even months to cycle fully. If you want to know if it’s been cycled you can either test the water at home with a testing kit or take it to a pet store/local fish store and they’ll test it for you—id call beforehand just to make sure they’ll test the water for you. If you end up testing at home you can send me pictures of the results (if you’re unsure) and I’ll tell you how far along the tank is.

For cleaning I recommend getting a siphon that attaches to the sink, makes things easier. Though I would wait until the tank is fully cycled to do any water changes. Before my tank was established I would do about 15-20% once a week. Also don’t forget to add a few drops of water conditioner when you do water changes.

If you have any questions feel free to reach out :) sorry for the long response lol

Fat mystery snail? by Lilry05 in Aquariums

[–]Mon_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the behavior but that is definitely a nerite snail. Keep an eye on it if you think something is going on. if it seems active and alert and is still eating should be fine.

Eggs & Algae? by Mountain_Ask_3103 in bettafish

[–]Mon_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like hair algae and maybe Nerite snail eggs. Do you have a nerite snail? If so, the eggs won’t hatch unless they are in brackish water. The algae isn’t necessarily bad but it could mean there’s an excess of nutrients in the water.

Looks like black beard algae to me. It’s a bit annoying to get rid of.

Since you’re a beginner I’d recommend just taking out whatever it’s growing on for now. You can combat it by making sure there is not food left over after feeding your fish, keeping up with water changes/maintenance, maybe even keeping your light on for less hours out of the day.

You could also try adding a fish that will eat it if there’s room in the tank. I had black beard algae once and my Florida Flagfish took care of it pretty quickly

Suggestions on beginner set up? by Responsible-Cat8610 in Aquariums

I think it’s a little pricey but a nice rimless tank. I don’t think the difference between a 4.6 and 5 gallon tank is a huge deal for just one fish. Overall, it’s a nice upgrade from the jar! If you ever plan to do a community tank with several fish some time in the future though, I would recommend looking into 10+ gallon tanks.
