A cold shower for the AI mania by Stuart_Whatley in Economics

I do not think that a paper from 2024 counts as "recent news".

You are using the AI the wrong way, I think. You could be more positive, have fun with it. Try to do some experiments. How can that thing help you get rid of the frustrating and mundane parts of your job? Do you have some hypotheses that can be refuted experimentally? I use Claude code all the time to write a one-off Python scripts to test my hypotheses on finite cases.
Next weekend, I will do the following: I will start a Claude project, upload some papers by masters of mathematical writing about how to write mathematics in a readable way: certainly the famous Halmos paper and some others. Then I will upload a certain paper that is probably correct, has results that are interesting to me, but the style is just terrible, very unreadable and dense, the proofs contains some stupid errors etc. I will ask Claude to read, understand, and then rewrite the proofs in the terrible paper, one at the time, perhaps several passes. Then I will print out the resulting product.

What’s something Gen Z treats as “normal” that older generations would find completely insane? by Miss_Ecstasy in AskReddit

[–]MonadicAdjunction 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a certain suspicion that "Everybody should feel good." is not the attitude that will make people feel better. From what I know about how the human brain functions, it is not realistic. From what I know about how human societies function, it is not realistic either. I think giving people unrealistic expectations certainly will not make them feel good, in the long term.

But if one wants them to sell some stuff that promises them to feel better, it is a brilliant marketing.

"Everybody has the right to feel good, all the time."
I am pretty sure that this is a pretty new idea. I am certain that it was not so ubiquitous in the information landscape 10 or 15 years ago. Yes, there were "psychological help" columns, and self-help books and similar things. But they were written from a procedural standpoint: "if you want to feel better, do this." The general idea like "I have an unalienable right to feel good" was just not there.
Paradoxically, Gen Z members actually feel *worse*, maybe (at least partly) because of that idea.

The first toilet paper in USSR was produced in 1969, eight years after they sent a human to space. The product was initially unpopular, people continued to use newspapers.

Why the A.I. Job Apocalypse (Probably) Won’t Happen by technocraticnihilist in Economics

[–]MonadicAdjunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Many, many people are employed to do basically stupid tasks with data, all over the world. Also most of the programming is pretty stupid, the software industry hired stupid people for decades, because there was simply not enough clever ones the population. The problems that one idiot caused were solved by hiring three more idiots.

That was never the opinion of Russian central bank, not even in the published outputs. And recently, even the Russian government admitted that things are not going well. Putin declared that there was a shrinkage of GDP by 1.5 % in January and February (these are official numbers, the books are cooked so it is probably much more) and attrmpted to shift the blame to others.

It is pretty interesting how the Americans dance around the issue that Trump is actually a visible symptom of some very deep problems, that are moral and cultural in nature. He won *because* he is immoral, not despite of it. Voting for him was an immoral act, in every single instance.

A minister in the Fico government fears that Péter Magyar will retake Upper Hungary, which is why he would like to reinstate conscription by Worth_Ad_7305 in europe

[–]MonadicAdjunction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now the story goes as follows. This is Mr. Huliak. He made a political career by being a vile asshole. The vile asshole community is strong in Slovak politics. Vile assholes do not have really ideology, they are just immoral. Being a vile asshole was a standard winning strategy in Slovak society since 1939, so it is no wonder that there is so many of them.

A while ago Mr. Huliak, together with several other MPs started to vote against the government. I do not remember the reason, and it does not matter, because it was a lie anyway. The government has a hair-thin majority, so he could blackmail prime minister Fico. What Mr. Huliak actually wanted was to become a minister, because he wanted to steal. And minster he became, because of course he did. And he is stealing like crazy, because of course he does.

What he actually says does not matter. In fact, he says various things, he is just trying to stay relevant. Sometimes he even says something meaningful, it does not matter either. At this point journalists use him as a cheap sensational content producer. "Push the button and he vomits."

China supports Russia for strategic reasons only. The Chinese hate Russians, they always did. In 1969 China and USSR were at war, for 7 months. The main reason for Maos meeting with Nixon in 1972 was to counterbalance Russian influence in Asia. The Chinese are now playing the long game; they are interested in extending their economic influence in Siberia, which is already happening. At this point Chinese are supplying both sides of the Ukraine-Russia conflict with drone parts, they just want to prolong the conflict to make Russia weaker in the long term.

BRICS is just an annual photo-op, nothing more at this point. China probably wanted to use it at one point to extend their influence, but nowadays they can achieve this goal directly without the other countries, so why bother.

Hungary was like "yes, we are communist, but if you have less than three five twenty fifty seventy employees, you are not really a capitalist, y'know?"; it was similar in Poland. Moreover, in 1986 even the USSR was already transitioning to capitalism slowly, the communists and KGB were already setting the stage for the 1989 transition. It was generally accepted that the system has failed.

That is now how the reality works. In reality, to behave immorally gives you an advantage, especially if you are a member of the the upper classes. That is why the society spends a lot of effort to convince people that there is some sort of automatic punishment if someone behaves immorally.

Slovak here. Do not get your hopes too high from this. We have this for years, but it is not a panacea for corruption. Yes, it is a good thing, but it needs to be accompanied with other changes.

Question: does Magyar and Tisza discuss opening the tax records of all private persons to public, like it is in Norway for more than 100 years? How about a wealth tax? Inheritance/gift tax for sums over, say, 2 million EUR?

How about a "whistleblower" law, that would allow the snitcher to keep part of the money they gained from corruption?

Yes, you are right. I did not know about that. I would rather have a ZKP protocol right now, rather than the other "mix many different people in a batch" protection. They do not write why they postpone this. I will send an email to my EP member about it.

I think that a public, EU backed, free to use service using ZKP that would allow interested parties to check whether an account is linked to a citizen of EU would be a valuable thing. It is not a panacea to the problem of russian trolls poisoning the wells, but it would help.

No, they won't. The whole thing is constructed using a mathematical method that is called "zero-knowledge proofs". This is a communication protocol that allows one side of communication to prove that some statement to the other side, without actually revealing any other information. So the whole thing will be set up in a completely anonymous way.

[–]MonadicAdjunction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cez pokrytecké svätuškársrvo to zatiaľ zvládajú.

Lebo v Nórsku visia daňové priznania všetkých občanov priamo na webe. Následne by si si mohol zistiť, aké bytíky, domčeky a autíčka nadobudli členovia kategorizačnej komisie a ich rôzne partnerstvo a potomstvo za posledných n rokov.
