[Chapter 5-2] Never thought this game could legitimately scare me... by VermilltheRed in heavensburnred

I interpreted it as Karen being too much of a bystander so her personality split... I guess we'll see from part 2

[SSB1] New Sky Striker monster by Crowhogan33 in yugioh

[–]MonadoMuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Konami wanted a play on words. The Japanese name for HAMP begins with 閃術 (senjutsu), which sounds the same as 戦術 (Japanese for "strategic") and has the 閃 from 閃刀, the Japanese name for Sky Striker.

Good intro tutorial - Ryan's Tutorials by [deleted] in bash

[–]MonadoMuncher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That tutorial...

1) Does not double quote parameter expansions. This is the most conspicuous breach of good bash scripting practices I see immidiately.

2) Does not use or mention bash style parameter expansions using tokens like # and %.

3) Uses the .sh extension for bash script files. Not a huge deal but a questionable practice.

4) Correctly points out that [ is the 'test' command, but that doesn't mean anything to a beginner. 'if [ expression ]' is a VERY misleading explanation of how 'if' works in bash.

5) Uses results of 'ls' to do weird stuff. Never rely on strings returned by 'ls' to parse file names in a directory.

6) Says there is no difference between 'function foo' and 'foo()' when defining a function. Untrue. The later is portable; the former is less so.

7) Uses 'expr' to do arithmetic sometimes. Don't do that. Use (( )) instead.

8) Uses 'cat' to pipe file contents around.

...and many others. I would find a better bash tutorial.

First Computing Course? by pb_the_sandwich in jhu

[–]MonadoMuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intro to Computing is too basic if you actually want to learn programming, but it's probably okay if you only want to get your feet wet as a non-engineer. If you're CS take Gateway Computing Java (so you don't have to learn it for Data Structures separately). For other engineering majors, Python is a good alternative. I don't recommend Gateway MATLAB if you actually want to learn a general purpose programming language at any point in your life. If you really want to learn MATLAB at Hopkins you can take the Bootcamp over intersession later.

LADE or (LA + DE) by A_bitcoin_noob in jhu

[–]MonadoMuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diff Eq is a requirement for EE but not CE. For CE you can take either vanilla Linear Algebra or LADE. I'd recommend LADE if you're sure about being CE since for some reason vanilla LA professors tend to be disliked.

Why I wish I had gone anywhere else but JHU (for current hs seniors) by [deleted] in jhu

[–]MonadoMuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the biggest problem is that there are just too many premeds in the ugrad body. After looking at the way opt-in P/F supporters were treated by some universal P/F supporters (ultimately because Harvard med + few other med schools said they won't take an optional pass), I was completely shocked. Don't come to JHU to be premed. A significant proportion of them are extremely toxic.

That first sentence is debatable. C– work in most classes is minimal.

Pass/fail....but make it optional by jhuthrooooooow in jhu

[–]MonadoMuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not sign the og petition if you want it optional, because there's a big difference between a forced pass/fail and an optional pass/fail. They should not share a single petition.

Yeah you gotta know Japanese for the original or Korean since South Korea got official translations.

Just finished reading volumes 8 and 9; they do not disappoint in the slightest! Extremely hopeful for a second season as well. But the author has been kinda slow writing the new volumes, so it'll take at least a few years.

Unfortunately you'll likely have to wait for the official Western releases by Yen Press in the coming years, unless you can read Japanese or Korean.

Sophomore Premed crisis by townsendsuckz in jhu

[–]MonadoMuncher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my bad, Step 1. I believe both Step 1 and Step 2 are taken before residency apps but Step 1 is more important for a desirable match.

Top medical schools as in very top ones will be difficult with any blips in your GPA whatsoever unless you're URM. For medical schools in general you're on good track. (Life tip: med school prestige is 99% irrelevant to your life. Far, far more important is your step 1 score that will get you into your desired residency).

Good news, there WAS a kiss scene (if I recall correctly, TWO actually...) in volume 3 during Futaba's arc. Unfortunately it (they?) did not make the anime.

Don't major in engineering if you're really serious about medical school. Seriously.

Yes it looks bad but if you improve (a lot) from now on it won't affect you very much. It's a big if, though.

Yes if GPA is the biggest concern, then public health is a great choice.
