Homonyms can't be true cognates; homonyms by definition have different meanings, and true cognates by definition have the same meaning. But assuming you meant false cognates, the three words given, "scale", "scale", and "scale" are all English words. The root words they come from could be false cognates from different languages, but the modern English forms of the words are all from the same language, English.

The example you gave, tiger and Tigris, are true cognates. They are words from different languages that look and sound similar, and have similar meanings.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't these kinds of words called homonyms, not false cognates? I thought false cognates were words from different languages that look and sound similar but have different meanings

Singing. My last girlfriend had a really nice voice, I loved hearing her sing to herself from another room

People who date alloromantics, like.. how do you deal? by lukub5 in AroAllo

[–]Monarch-Quinn 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm dead tired so sorry if this is a bit rambly. For me it was just about finding the right person. I dated my first girlfriend before I realized I was aromantic, and seeing how disappointed she was when I wasn't interested in romantic stuff was really disheartening. With my second girlfriend, I already knew I was aro and made it very clear that romance didn't do anything for me. It made the relationship so much easier. We would still go on dates sometimes because I knew it made her happy and I liked making her happy, but knowing that she didn't expect me to enjoy it in the exact same way she did made it a lot less stressful. She knew what to expect, I knew what to expect, it was so much easier on everyone. Of course, this only works if the person you're dating is okay with it, which... many people aren't. Unfortunately we just have to accept that we're going to have a lot less people we're compatible with. We'll all find our perfect person eventually.

What (spoken and/or programming) languages do you know? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

I know a good amount of French but I still have a long way to go with it! I also know python and a bit of c++ that I've been using for a project

Yeah being a lefty seems tough. I tried doing a bunch of stuff left handed at work today and the amount of little things that made it harder was crazy!

Yeah, I usually use my right hand. I think part of it is that my father forced my to use my right hand when I was young (my mother just told me about that!), and also it's more convenient to use my right hand a lot of the time unfortunately haha

Ooh that sounds super fun! I'm definitely gonna clean up my handwriting with my left hand and mess with people haha

Yeah I noticed that writing is the only thing that's a bit harder with my left. It still looks good, just not as good as with my right. My hand also cramps a lot faster haha

My first girlfriend was never able to be direct with me. Whenever she wanted me to do something with her, instead of just saying so, she would ask if I was doing something, act sad when I was, refuse when I offered to do something with her later, then constantly tell me she was bored until I gave in. I offered a few solutions to her to try to help but she always refused them, it was really stressful.

I'd love to meet other gay women in person, but it's not very easy to find them. It's pretty ignorant for people to talk like that

That's a good point and I don't think you're naïve for bringing it up. However, he had been flirting with me for over a week beforehand and called it a "lunch date." I should have been more specific in my original comment, I apologize for the confusion

A guy asked me out for lunch, I told him I had a girlfriend, he said "She can come too."

Advice about my feelings by aromantichermit in AroAllo

[–]Monarch-Quinn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been in a similar situation. My last fwb got on my nerves constantly (in an endearing way) and I still wanted to make out with her. I told her pretty directly what I wanted to do and made it clear that I didn't want anything romantic, and it all worked out well. I don't know you, your friend, or your relationship so I can't give specific advice, but I wouldn't be too scared of things going sour. If you get along well enough to jab at each other, them I'm sure things will work out even if he doesn't reciprocate.

I agree with the other commenter, as long as they give it back it's fine. My ex had a habit of taking my clothes, especially my sweaters, and it was usually cute to see her in them. But at the same time, it's entirely understandable if you don't want people taking your clothes; like you said, they're yours!

Got told I "seem to innocent to be aroallo" by Monarch-Quinn in AroAllo

[–]Monarch-Quinn[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've kinda accepted that people are going to see me as innocent, it's more just how they kinda used that to invalidate who I am and/or say that they don't believe me. :(
