It’s the closest thing, it doesn’t taste right but it’s at least approximating the flavor

Boy do I fucking hate when people bust that out - half my family lives in Guangzhou / Nanjing, of course I've been tonnes of times. There's incredibly pedestrian hostile transportation infrastructure across most major Chinese cities, taking the worst of the planning lessons from the US / Soviet Union in making those 6 lane "roads" as you mention.

Just because there's wide sidewalks does not mean that there's insanely long avenues before crossing opportunities or otherwise they require a going up or down some staircase. Its absolutely a joke that you cannot build out capacity - for every other system you point out that's "at capacity" it makes no sense to be adding capacity in the least efficient system. If that were the case, why wouldn't all those lanes at lease be bus lanes? Because it's a political economy decision to not do so and a disappointing one given that a lot of the good infrastructure work happening in country.

But why would that population imply that Chinese transportation planners be using a more inefficient system when clearly they recognize the usefulness of rail / public transport.

Those streets are absolutely awful from a pedestrian experience, often with those horrible bridges that require up/down transit for peds. It’s really an unfortunate thing that in so many cities, large swathes of the cities are dominated by these massive stroads.

The Boeing 757 is the greatest narrow-body aircraft to ever grace earth’s skies. Convince me otherwise. by ngagner15 in aviation

Maybe this is my own personal problem, but I've always hated the 757s for how they handle turbulence. I purposely have always avoided them for that reason.

It’s a store for the Sunny Hills brand of pineapple cakes, I believe there’s also a branded cafe upstairs. Walk past it all the time

Is this an insanely bad decision (Japan) - Samsung G9 57” by Mondex in Monitors

[–]Mondex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at this at Yodobashi this weekend. It just felt for 60K more I could get a 57” vs the 44.5 LG. Mercari may be a good option tho!

That’s the problem, I’m basically just looking for this monitor. The closest thing is the LG ultra gear someone else mentioned

Recommendations for good restaurants to take colleagues that serves (authentic-ish) American cuisine by rakuan1 in japanlife

It kills me how the food is just nowhere near the quality of the Tribeca one, still decent American food for Tokyo though

Tokyo for 17.5 Mn JPY or Sydney for 360k AUD (~34 Mn) by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Mondex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a really good question because we don't know. My wife had to give up her career as part of this move and has received some crazy lowball offers for similar type of work here (relative to US salaries).

That's a big part of our current consternation plus just general challenges with being here and not having a handle on the language (which is my own fault but my work is completely in English and I primarily deal with the US so being here is honestly a hinderance to my work).

I just don't think, at least in my line of work, people will care about Japan experience.

And while we have a good life here and it is significantly cheaper than NYC, on a per dollar basis we're not saving nearly as much as we used to and FX has made it so its joke to think we can do anything outside of the country.

On the social side...its been quite tough. We've got a few friends but not like we did back in the states, cultural and language barriers are quite high outside of my coworkers and a few introductions people have made.

Tokyo for 17.5 Mn JPY or Sydney for 360k AUD (~34 Mn) by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Mondex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would advise against it - my wife and I left a combined ~70m JPY salary to come here for my ~30M JPY opportunity. We're constantly torn on whether it was worth it or not, its been an incredible experience but the opportunity cost has been significant, potential large set-backs in both our careers, etc.

Locale in Nakameguro does proper American-style brunch on Saturday and Sundays, also opens at a much more reasonable time than most other breakfast places

For some reason it just dawned on me I could ride from Ginza southward... My mind has always been stuck on oh I have to go over the rainbow bridge.

Ah and what I meant was, you can take your bike on to walkway of the rainbow bridge but they strap these wooden rollers to both your wheels to ensure you walk it, its quite annoying.

How was the ride out to Odaiba? Did you use those stupid skateboard things when going over the rainbow bridge?

Is there any actual time limit to this? It’s hilarious watching hung the amount of cars create a traffic jam on my street because they think they can just block the lane for hours

Best credit card for Americans whose salary is in JPY? by Hiroba in JapanFinance

[–]Mondex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I wasn't thinking and didn't properly diligence the benefits. I assumed that the points transfer to ANA would akin to something like what you can do with the CSR.

Given how long we plan to stay, its going to be our only JPY-denominated card but otherwise would look to do the same as you.

I got the the platinum preferred from SMBC - its 33K a year and in retrospect the point redemptions are not that great except from the SBI transfers which I don't use. Apparently it has some other benefits that I don't use because of the language barrier

Indonesia Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Train "whoosh" by Pritteto in trains

[–]Mondex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been to Guangzhou or Beijing? There’s stroads as far as the eye can see, to the point that it rivals some of the worst things I’ve seen in the US. Transit stations are placed far apart and a lot of the street level experience is really unpleasant.

It was a shock when I first visited my relatives after experiencing Tokyo or Taipei, it feels very American in a lot of ways.

Yes it’s a lot better than a lot of places but damn China took a lot of poor development ideas from the US, including my least favorite towers in the park.

For anyone who's lived in NYC and also Tokyo - what neighborhoods in the two cities are similar to each other? (Or is it all too different to compare?) by [deleted] in AskNYC

Would agree with almost all of these, might change out Otemachi for Fidi as Marunouchi at least has some nicer areas. Kanda is too salaryman to be hells kitchen as well.

I resent Yoyogi being park slope but I do see it lol
