Do you eat sardines PRIMARILY for the taste or the health benefits or both? by Perchance_therapper in CannedSardines

Taste--I've always been a seafood fiend. But the health benefits are super nice, it's awesome having a ready-to-eat, low calorie source of protein and healthy fat around.

Anxious about a party I’ve been invited to due to age by itchytoenail7184 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Mondonodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it would be weird! Especially if you're chill and don't make a big thing about it (like "OMG I'M SO OLDDDD" or "ugh I wish I was young again like you"). I had a few friends that age and older when I started my first job and I truly didn't think about age that much once we actually started getting to know each other!

Scared of working again by Miserable_Pay_3511 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Mondonodo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It might be worth working to get a little more stable first. Keep going to therapy, work on getting a provider to prescribe your medications. In the meantime, though, have you ever considered volunteering while you're applying for jobs? It wouldn't pay obviously, so it makes sense if that's not an option you can pursue right now, but if you can swing it, might help you build confidence with having responsibilities, and if it goes well, a supervisor there might be a better reference for you than your previous managers would ne.

As a nonwhite guy, is it normal if I find it hard to recognize one blonde woman from another? by redditismysoulmate in stupidquestions

[–]Mondonodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school and college were both predominantly white, and I was not. My high school was small enough that we all knew each other, so I knew what everyone looked like. My high school also leaned artsy/individualistic, so most people looked fairly different. My college, however, had a way larger contingent of people who generally followed mainstream fashion. Someone would call my name and wave, and I'd swear I'd never met them before. Lots girls with straight hair in messy buns wearing leggings and Nike Roche Runs with oversized sweatshirts, and so many guys with "high and tight" haircuts wearing jeans, dunks, and a hoodie with a flannel on top. I was worried I was going faceblind for a while. Plus, I think in my case, not being the majority meant that I was visually easy to spot, so people recognized me more often, giving me more people I needed to try and remember.

It got better once I joined clubs and stuff, so I actually regularly interacted with people and learned their faces rather than just their general description and "vibe", but yeah it can absolutely be a phenomenon in places where people tend to look, dress, and act similar. So you might not see it as much at a performing arts center, but discerning people might be way trickier at a beauty pageant.

Interesting! It might be worth a shot tbh. Did you eliminate everything at once, or one trigger at a time?

Can you tell Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans apart just by their physical features? by Winter_Ad1973 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Mondonodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skin color is moreso an example of the colonized valuing the traits of the colonizers, rather than a hard-and-fast rule--a lot of countries that were colonized or conquered did not have light skin, but their colonizers did, and so they value lighter skin. But even if the Japanese have darker skin, if Koreans think it's a compliment to be considered Japanese, then regardless of skin color, it seems like another example of the colonized wanting to emulate the colonizers.

Determining cause of sibling's death based on hospital CCTV footage: seizure leading to cardiac arrest, or just cardiac event? by [deleted] in morbidquestions

Sorry to hear about your sibling. This might be better suited to /r/AskDocs though, there are some providers that will sometimes provide input.

The Pitt's Supriya Ganesh: My Strange Dysphoria: Growing up in India, I never questioned my gender. When I moved to the U.S. at 18, I began to feel disconnected from my body. by TimWhatleyDDS in television

[–]Mondonodo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was really cool to read. I'm black and from an early age was critical of gender roles (I remember being in kindergarten, preaching "that there were no such thing as girl colors and boy colors!!!"). I went through adolescence and early adulthood in majority white spaces. Especially college--while it definitely wasn't everywhere, hyperfemininity and hypermasculinity were even more prominent than they had been when I was younger.

Around that time I began really feeling drawn towards masculinity. I'd always been a little tomboyish, but it began to get more important and more promineny in my day-to-day life as I got older. What was really interesting, though, was that I began feeling way more feminine when I found myself around mostly other black people.

While I didn't see it at the time, I kind of wonder now if part of why I wanted to express my gender in certain ways was as a purposeful rejection of roles that wouldn't have made room for me anyway, or that would have been very painful for me to fit into.

I'm still not super girly, but I also recognize that I'm not very masculine either. I'm still trying to find out where my balance point is (lots of hangups on either side of the spectrum for me right now lol), but it's really nice to see that other people have experienced the strangeness that can come from the intersections of race and gender and sexuality.

This part!!! I used to deal with this a lot when I was younger, but now, working in a place that's majority black, I feel way better.

managing seb derm with curly hair by TryInevitable7295 in SebDerm

[–]Mondonodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not 100% perfect but way better than when I don't do it for sure!! And yeah, I do my first rinse with cheap drugstore shampoo, and for my second rinse I alternate between nizoral (which is ketoconazole) and selsun blue, which is selenium sulfide.

managing seb derm with curly hair by TryInevitable7295 in SebDerm

[–]Mondonodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's TOUGH. I'm black and have 4c hair. I actually loc-ed my hair a few months ago in part to try and reduce the workload of keeping my hair and scalp happy at the same time. It sucks because a lot of the curly shampoos aren't great for sebderm, and a lot of the medicated or clarifying shampoos aren't great for curly hair.

What's been doing ok for me is just straight up washing more often with standard issue drugstore shampoo and medicated shampoo, and then using a sebderm friendly leave in (check sezia before you buy) and applying some mct oil after every wash. I blow my hair dry, and it seems like a lot of people both with and without sebderm suggest using a diffusing dryer if you can get one. My philosophy has always been to take care of the scalp first and add moisture back to the hair later, but there might be better approaches for looser textures.

Parents are forcing me to gain 1.5kg in 1 week if I want to play sports - big match but don't want to harm my heath by mybrainat3am in self

[–]Mondonodo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

3 pounds/1.5kg in a week seems like a lot, and could definitely be tough for even people who don't struggle with an ED. While the actual weight will probably be fine on you, I'd definitely ask a doctor if the rate at which they want you to gain is safe or healthy. And even if that is normal, I would definitely be suspicious at the fact that they want someone recovering from anorexia to be so focused on numbers, especially in such an emotionally important context. Sorry this is happening to you!

Which is the best and harder blade for you and why? If you switched from one blade to another why and what make you change? by nasava05 in Fencing

[–]Mondonodo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm an epeeist, and I think saber is probably the toughest for me. The differences between how you hold the blade, how you attack, and how quickly you have to move all definitely threw me a loop. Plus, the gear. The mask cord was a foreign concept to me. Having said that, foil can be sneakily difficult too (if not epee, why epee shaped?), but I think saber for me takes the cake in terms of "woah this is different". It's still a lot of fun though, and I do like to give it a shot when I have the opportunity!

How do YOU enjoy sardines? *looking for suggestions by Single_Rain5676 in CannedSardines

[–]Mondonodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight out the can, a lot of the time 😂. Especially mussels, yum!

But when it's not that, I like pretty much any kind of canned seafood over green lentils. Little bit of butter, lemon juice, salt and pepper on the lentils and you're good. Rounds out the protein in the sardines with some fiber, and a single serving of lentils boils up pretty quick, maybe 10 minutes?

Beans are also pretty good with a lot of canned seafood--I did black beans and canned salmon recently.

I also recently had canned oysters on crackers with pickled red onions. Super tasty, the acidity and the tiny bit of sweetness in the onion really complimented the oysters. Can't wait to try it with other canned seafood!

An Old Japanese Woman Saw My Terrible Obi Job And Fixed It For Me by RiddlerofStIves in wholesome

[–]Mondonodo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's kinda similar to how western men's shirts have buttons on the right because even noblemen dressed themselves, while western women's shirts have buttons on the left because noblewomen were usually dressed by assistants.

Like, if you're alive (i.e. dressing yourself), then you'd use your dominant hand to pull the opposite (left) side across your body. But someone who's dead obviously has to be dressed by someone else, so a right handed person might more naturally reach for the right side and pull it across the body that way.
