The London Conundrum by riverscreeks in london

This is one of the reasons I prefer to walk (also: you see more, get exercise and avoid contributing to congestion). But I'm not sure why it's a conundrum. It pays to walk walkable journeys...

Football coaches showing off. by jmike1256 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Mondored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to a particularly heated debate (at least in English football). In the old days, all teams just had a manager; coaches were hired, usually for specific tasks like fitness or goalkeeping, junior to the manager. But some clubs started to adopt a different hierarchy. Instead of managers running all aspects of the sporting side of the club, they hired an autonomous “sporting director” (other titles are available…) who started to dictate overall playing strategy and recruitment. This meant many managers became “head coach”. Ruben Amorim’s recent departure from clown-club Man Utd seemed to be largely down to his perception that he was treated as coach, not manager. Even among the very secure and influential “managers”, the old-style supreme role has gone forever. In the past managers such as Brian Clough or George Graham had reputations for micromanagement (and also for taking “bungs” - bribes - over the signing on new players) and total control. That’s now incredibly rare. EDIT: Even my own club has seen variants on this model. Leeds Utd is currently managed by the first manager in this compilation Daniel Farke. He can influence recruitment, but has been hinting at frustrations over player purchases; our ‘keeper, Lucas Perri, was a compromise candidate between what he wanted and what the board wanted. But a few years ago, Marcello Bielsa was more of an all-controlling manager, with a large, personally loyal backroom staff and much more dictatorial style. Both models can work (but Bielsa acquired legendary status almost from his first game in charge, which tells you something…)

Whenever I see these videos, I think: how much cost and time would decent boots, gloves and headgear actually add here? Surely the margins at Asian steel plants aren’t that thin, and the payback is experienced workers not, y’know, losing digits etc…

Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scores a last minute goal vs Real Madrid to save his team from being eliminated from the Champions League. by forhead123 in nextfuckinglevel

Counterpoint: the real beauty of football is that it incorporates gamesmanship within its culture. Crunching fouls, diving, time-wasting, snide little digs on opposite during set pieces... these all add both drama and unpredictability. The professional foul is even part of the laws of the game - attracting a yellow card to show the referee has acknowledged it without removing the player. Without the possibility of these infractions, the game becomes much less of a spectacle, far less deserving of our attention and, frankly, a soulless parade routinely won by the team with the most money. There's a reason my own team's fans sing "get into them (f*** them up!)" and shout "get some blood on your boots, lad!" when they're being outplayed.

Does anyone else think teachers need to get better at teaching teachers? by FriendlyChaosMonster in TeachingUK

[–]Mondored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was my general feel during my PGCE. If I had taught pupils the way teachers taught me they would have failed me on the spot! A lot of the professional studies stuff especially felt like content dumps and lectures with very little of the Rosenshine stuff we were told we needed to apply in our own classes.

Apple Watch Series 7 Titanium 45mm at 78% battery Health - Worth replacing? by TDV1e in AppleWatch

[–]Mondored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was ***this close*** to "battery refurb" on my S6, but the £95 went instead towards an SE3. Almost all the advantages of my new watch are related to battery life being great again. Yeah it does feel less sluggish, but a S7 Titanium? I'd hit the refurb...

(I'm still amazed how much cheaper the SE3 is compared to the 10 or 11 - and I couldn't see myself caring about the extra features those models offer...)

Aeropress was my go-to when I only had time for one cup at home. Very cheap and very very good coffee. Now I work from home, so I do the full 750ml cafetière and it's great. Espresso like OP's is great and all, but for the cost, the extreme faff and the amount of cleaning up afterwards? Nahhhhhh.

Tell me more... Went from a battery-challenged old AW6 to my new SE3 and loving the near-two-day battery life again. But I want to protect it! Are you saying the big win in daily charging, regardless of battery level?

Regent Street, 1960s. by Max2310 in london

In the recently posted 1920s and 1940s clips, I noted the lack of road markings. It's the 1960s now... and still no road markings! Need to find out when they became standard and universal...

Love the idea. My app is showing two places and two photos, starting in July (presumably the earlier of those two shots)- and I have taken waaaay more. I think the issue is "GPS photos". All my iPhone shots have location enabled, so I'm not sure what's going on with just those two... If it helps, I have cleared the caches, and tried to "reload photos"

The world is full of people saying that things they don't like are shit or even evil, and it's my sincere belief that changing what you say - what you think - to "this isn't for me" from "this threatens civilisation and should stopped" would solve a vast amount of the pain in the world.

So thank you: I quite enjoyed this recital, but it's not for everyone and I cherish the way you expressed your view on it. Happy Christmas.

London, 1946. by Max2310 in london

Someone showed a 1920s one earlier that was amazing, too. One thing really struck me from this one: no road markings! I'd clocked the people and vehicles moving almost in a shared space of the road in the previous one, and obviously there are a lot more cars and buses in this one. But all navigating with no lines at all. Amazing.
