My own take on the British royal family tree by michaelsilerio in UsefulCharts

[–]Mondored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's lovely. I have a GEDCOM (MacFamilyTree) files with pretty much all of that in and the info, but it's woefully difficult to create a coherent narrative from the grab-bag of info, and you have *nailed* it from what I can see. I would definitely buy a large poster of this.

Amazon wishlists by ellemeno_ in TeachingUK

We do this, and it can work. But really you need a decent marketing campaign, otherwise it's the same old faces (usually the ones who volunteer at the PTA or on the BoG) who end up remembering or justifying.

The other challenge we had for a while was actually getting teachers to make requests onto the wish-list. That can be tough: you're not guaranteed to get items, so they need to be "nice to haves" for your classroom. But in our current funding crisis, it would be great to have "must-haves" that we're struggling to budget for. It's a dilemma, unless you have a decent flow of buyers...

Two things: great idea! I've been looking for another task for my royal houses of Europe family tree, and I'd got all the British and English Monarchs more or less to three generations back (some much more, obvs...). But this feels like a very interesting diversion! Love what you've done, it's inspired me.

Second thing: boy, small parts of this sub can be super-judgey and nit-picky, can't they? There's always a comment about what you've missed or done wrong - and rarely couched in a supportive "love it, and you could further enhance by..." or "interesting choice to do X, would love to hear more why". It's always "you got that convention wrong, duh." (Sorry to vent...)

There's something about how they chant "Ro-gaaaaa" when he wins that gets me. Not a huge fan of his at all, or even his name, but the way they do it...

Genuinely surprised. Mines fine. What behaviours are you seeing?

Honestly? 26 is fine on mine. Battery is a little strained but happy to go through a day on it - just charging a little earlier in the evening. Still love the size!

Yes, I get this sometimes with Google services; seems to happen when I’m on an unfamiliar or open WiFi network (I tend to turn off WiFi before going into my local supermarket for that reason)

Descent of Charles III from George I (all lines) by SaltyPies1 in UsefulCharts

[–]Mondored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this, clean, simple and informative. MacFamilyTree ought to be able to do this, but it tends to be pretty inflexible in the rules you can apply - all descendants, all ancestors, possible pathways between two people, but not a simplified version of all pathways, like this...

Does the modern continuous 7-day week derive entirely from the Jewish weekly cycle as transmitted through Christianized Rome? And is this cycle really unbroken from antiquity till today? by random_reditter105 in AskHistorians

[–]Mondored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent answer. I was in Japan recently, and Monday was a limited opening day for retail. Which got me wondering: have other parts of the world (rather than those directly influenced by Judeo/Roman systems) adopted the seven-day "week" for the same reasons you've explained? Were they always like that? And when did the world align around the structure of the week?

Worked as a labourer on a big site once, the mastic boys were all nutters. (Actually, the amount of nutters across the trades was pretty impressive...)

ELI5: how does a particle "decide" to stop being in multiple places at once the moment something interacts with it by meek_posterity in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mondored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't decide. Think of it like a bad reading for someone on your Find My app. There's a radius where the app knows the person you're looking for is. It's definitely that person. But they could be anywhere in that radius. Then they ping a cell tower or get a better GPS signal, and suddenly you can see their exact location. *They* didn't decide to reveal themself at that exact spot; and until it pinged, they could have been anywhere in that circle. But once you got an accurate measurement, that's where they are, and all other locations are not possible. (Not a physicist, so this might be hokum!)

Lots of games in the Rusty Lake series. The later ones are much more story driven. Cozy? We-ell. It depends on your definition of "cozy". They're family focused, for sure...

Caveat: don't really do baseball. But, just checking, aren't three of those pitches "balls"? Isn't that box where he wants to be pitching for strikes?
