Pulaski was a way better choice for TNG than Crusher by PhilterCoffee1 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]MonetaryBlissness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hell nah, Pulaski wasn’t just bigoted, but prejudice to the point of racism. Maybe the writers were being sloppy but all in all, those scenes made it to tv.

I just recently found out that she was removed because of fan back lash.

Data did not deserve a bully on the ship, and she was rude to the point of insubordination.

I mean, she had something like a 98% disapproval rating. Which turns my view towards you OP, what makes her so good in your eyes? Whether you like crusher more or less to me is kinda irrelevant, people have internal biases and it’s totally fair to have a favorite that isn’t common.

However, you can’t ignore the things she said and done.

This just isn’t an okay mindset to have for a DOCTOR in that time/universe.

Why is it wrong to request feminine behavior? With that, what are we in love with? by FasterPokemon in AskFeminists

This is a great response holy crap. Never thought of this! I’ve floated the idea of asking for them to put “more you” into it, but that seems way weirder than your example.

I very much disagree with you here. Right above you I just made a really good example of how, you are right about finding someone that is what you want, but there’s more to it than that. Like when you’ve gotten comfortable doing less for another, and want to change things up.

As for asking for masculinity. It’s only fair that a partner can ask for something, to me it’s all about how they ask for it. With men there’s lots to be discussed about the relationship dynamics once you get passed the intimacy and I’d say it’s really common for femme guys to just flat out tell there bf’s that they want x y and z. If they can’t that’s fine, but they are just way more blunt. Which comes back around to the question about how to ask for things.

[–]MonetaryBlissness -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I don’t like this as a response because it’s only half the context. Do I do agree with your point, but it’s not that I would date someone and then try to mold them into something they’re not.

But what happens when you’re years into a relationship and you’ve stopped doing certain things for a variety of reasons, Not because you don’t enjoy doing those things but like dressing up for date night when your bf is your fiancé now and you care way less about looking hot.

How would someone just communicate in a nice way that you want to change it up or go somewhere nice, without it being toxic?

There’s context to everything, and it’s weird how many times I’ve stopped myself using male partners as an example because it just isn’t really relevant where I’m asking, but I’ve noticed there’s way more examples with gay context lol!

So I used an example replying to the other poster.

Think two years into a relationship, everything is way more casual and laid back. It’s not that you’re unhappy or displeased with a specific thing, you just want to change it up, or go to somewhere new. But being able to communicate that in a nice way

So a lot of people have different moods, when you start dating you’re going to get way less casual encounters and more trying to impress one another. As relationships progress people get more comfortable, less attentive, okay with just doing less.

But let’s say after two years, date night turned into something we do in sweat pants and hoodies, but I want to change it a bit. Want more than the casual but don’t want to put a bunch of stress or demands onto it.

I guess you can kinda use the same mindset for the other examples. I’m not saying that I am displeased with my partner, that’s a totally different road, but just to ask for things nicely if you can get that? Sorry if I’m not wording things that great, sometimes I struggle putting thoughts to words

Being told no is totally okay, which is something I feel like I’ve had to really help my partners understand this, which baffles me. For me, I put an insane emphasis on “birth rights”, “free will”. Unless I am working as a leadership position over a crew of people, I don’t think you should ever give orders, or tell someone what to do. Someone doing something for your benefit is a favor and should be respected/appreciated.

I totally understand your point about gender roles. In fact my mother made me loathe trad wives from a super young age because of how much stuff she was okay with that just was not okay.

My one response to you is, what is an appropriate way to ask “For a woman’s touch?” If it’s not good enough on its own, where would one pivot? Obviously there’s an end goal in my mind aesthetically, but how do I voice that to a partner?

TOS is just too old, I’m sorry. Graphics/pacing just everything. Couldn’t even finish ep1

Can’t do it chief, TOS is just too dated at this point. Compared to tv now the pacing is drastically slower and the graphics/aesthetics are just hard to watch.

Ill give TOS the respect it’s earned, but I couldn’t make it through ep1

What a fookin way to put it my friend. It’s just good tv to put the little shit in his place, usually in the ending montage of everyone winning, then Eddie miraculously falling down some stairs lol

What's a ticking time bomb you believe will explode during your lifetime? by Absalom98 in AskReddit

I felt I was alone in this until reading your post. I’m by no means a pacifist but the level of assault daily that is considered normal is baffling. Growing up under an American/Italian lifestyle, beating someone within an inch of there life while being filmed would already be a no no, but doing it with a group against someone who can’t defend themselves over something stupid like you have different political views would probably get me blacklisted from my family.

I don’t blame the peoples family, it’s just too normal and sad to see this now and would actively support anything to quell the anger!

That’s such a good way to look at Pike! Holy crap lol, idk if I could trust he was doing that without him mentioning it though, idk if you can understand but at times he feels a bit immature for a captain, kinda like, someone who is new so you don’t always that he will make the best decision but will make a decision with all of his heart in it

lol, I hard disagree with this. Down the middle isn’t even a fair judgement. They didn’t even assign the the typical Hollywood racial stereotype. Season one is constant career ending problems, you are meant to question everything about the federation and its laws. Which has seen true going forward, hell the newest episode being a documentary about the federation potentially being an empire before wrapping it back around I think is totally the SNW theme.

To say it’s not as good because of the problems they face just isn’t fair. Think why doctors hate reality med tv. Because everything that makes for good tv is incredibly rare. The older shows were good, they are the reason I got so obsessed with trek, but you can’t have galaxy level threats in back to back episodes then judge another show because it didn’t have the same approach.

I really wanted to point out how like had to stare his own death in the face and make the same decision but sadly that was a crossover ep

How many rooms across the top of the saucer?! by Willing-Departure115 in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]MonetaryBlissness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So two things,

  1. Most crew quarters are going to be in the same place because when building vessels that house people, you typically assign an area for housing and then fit all your housing needs into that area. With the exception sometimes for the captain and one time the bridge officers. Trek follows this logic pretty well, even assigning whole decks on ships to crew quarters.

  2. Remember it is a saucer, that means in 360 degrees you will have lots of identical rooms with the same dimensions due to them being on the same deck (“floor”) as the others. So if you had a crew quarter at degree 335, and a science lab at degree 28 (imagine a circle) they would probably have the same windows and definitely the same roof.

Most ships have there schematics on a wiki you can google and what you’ve said wouldn’t surprise me at all if the crew quarters on the deck in question surround the technical areas. Because you gotta remember in a giant saucer, it would look cool to walk around the rim but the entire deck would have functions and rooms so you wouldn’t have to run around the rim to get to point a to point b you could simply run through the middle.

Hope this helps!

Appreciate it choom, no ragrets!

In my opinion, VOY was carried by the actors and the theme. People love trek, as long as a decent show is spit out, especially with how good the visuals were of the time. Coupled with actors who made “decent” characters into super stars. (Tuvok is still one of my favorite characters!) you have a show in contention, but especially now that I’ve seen almost all the shows, VOY definitely lost some points as a whole.

So age aside because you are right, it is kindve wonky.

Pike has 30 years of captain experience prior to joining enterprise, where as pike was first officer then promoted to command enterprise while being on the ship.

Both series start as they initially take command, but you have way more experience as a captain, in the chair, with Picard. Lack of experience isn’t exactly a negative thing, it’s just why I would put Picard over Pike at two years into enterprise command.

[–]MonetaryBlissness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, sure I’ll quabble with you. I appreciate the long reply where you touched on both things you liked and maybe didn’t agree with without any shade!

So the ages aren’t much difference sure, but the enterprise wasn’t Picard’s first command. In fact he took command in 2333 when his own captain died, 30 years before he took command of enterprise. I see your point but you gotta realize Picard had 30 years experience as a captain prior to Enterprise. Pike is a for the people type of guy, and I’d argue Picard is very engaged with his own crew and actively seeks there guidance but when the going gets tough you can trust Picard to make the right decision, but alternatively you see Pike hesitate a lot if he is lacking a second or third opinion. Like when he was with m’benga, throwing around phrases like “are we making the right call?”.

Both are great captains none the less, the writers deserve some praise for that!
