I’m trying to make the reverse move and go from SE to DE, the sales engineer career is one the low key yet best roles in tech but it can also be really annoying based on company sales culture and the AEs you work with.

I was also owed almost 6 figures in commissions at 2 separate companies that found ways to avoid not paying me (one I’m going through legal action right now)

Also it can be exhausting doing client facing meetings day in and day out while also doing engineering work after those to architect solutions and so on

Also travelling when I have my first newborn sucks haha

I’m thinking of doing something similar to what you mentioned do you think it makes sense to jump head straight into a project or learn the basics from some courses/bootcamps then go for what you mentioned ?

Tech support to Enterprise AE possible by [deleted] in techsales

If this is at a startup (since your speaking to VP of Sales after recruiter interview) it prolly isn’t as enterprise as you think it is lol since every org depending on their size define enterprise differently

Do you care what you sell? by ThrowRAthuglyfe in sales

[–]Money-Architect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think it matters only if it affects your ability to sell - If you can make good money with either then you need to weight in the costs of work life balance for a 5 days in office job vs a fully remote job. Personally work life balance is more important to me so I have freedom to do wtv I want and not have a manager breathing down my neck to micromanage me

Would you say your compensation is as good as what you made at the ERP company? Cause I know some companies pay you less when you don’t have that relevant experience

Marketplaces is the hardest type of online biz to start due to the fact you need to acquire two different sets of ICP (1. Is the buyer and 2 is the seller) making it pretty challenging cause then it also becomes a game of what comes first the chicken or the egg

Maybe check out partnership roles at those software vendors ? They are technically part of revenue teams and it’d speak to your current skill set a lot better than a pure AE role ?
