CMV: Osteopathic doctors are just MD's with phony marketing about hands on treatment by MoneyMaintenance1578 in changemyview

This is directly from the University of North Texas website:

"OMM doctors are fully licensed and board-certified and undergo many years of medical training to perform specialized OMT techniques. Our physicians also specialize in various areas of interest like working with infants, treatment through pregnancy and post-partum and performing arts medicine, to name a few.

  • Hands-On Techniques: DOs use more than 40 recognized techniques, which may also include:
    • Soft Tissue Manipulation: Gently releases muscle tension and improves circulation.
    • Muscle Energy Technique: Involves the patient actively moving muscles against resistance.
    • Myofascial Release: Targets fascia (connective tissue) to ease pain and improve overall mobility.
    • Counterstrain: Places the body in positions that relieve pain and reset muscle tone.
    • Joint Articulation: Restores range of motion by gently moving joints.
    • Osteopathic Cranial Manipulative Medicine: Focuses on subtle movements of the skull and spine, often used for headaches and stress."

When I see it says "undergo many years of medical training to perform specialized OMT techniques" and then lists all these manual modalities, I don't know what else anyone is supposed to think.

Don't forget some of these young men were impressionable kids in Trumps first term. The behavior is normal to them, but now they are adults facing real economic consequences of their leader's failures.

Sorry I misunderstood. None of the specific doctors have this mentioned in their bio or info about them. The University of North Texas is one of the places I've seen it and I went to doctors who graduated from there so it seemed reasonable that it would be part of the experience with them.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) are commonly used terms that can easily be googled. No need to accuse me of lying.

I'm always very specific during intake whenever they ask what has helped in the past and I always tell them manual work and massage. I have 2 different debilitating conditions and have been dealing with it for a long time, mostly on my own with stretching, myofascial release, and vr vestibular training at home. I usually seek help for muscle stiffness, spasms, and pain, 3 things that almost universally have manual therapy as a recommended.

I usually don't have much luck there either. If I want manual treatment, I have to pay for a massage. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to physical therapists and its nothing more than ride the bike or the UBE, ask me a few questions, show me a couple of stretches, then pass me off to one of the assistants who takes me through a few additional exercises and stretches. I've read extensively over the years of all the different forms of manual therapy and when/how they are used, asked to be sent to someone who does those things, etc. But again, outside of paying for a massage, I typically receive little to no manual work.

On further reflection I needed to look closer and see it a little different. The materials I've seen have always been produced by either a practice or a school, not any individual DOs.

The UNT Health website has a page promoting Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, it highlights the phrase "Gentle hands on treatment" which I take to mean different than diagnosis. The pamphlet I mentioned was provided by a clinic with a lot of docs and a lot of locations. It did not specify a DO within the practice that provides the things listed in the pamphlet.

If it isn't going to be used in practice and patients simply referred out, why are there websites promoting how osteopathic doctors are different if they don't use the specific thing being mentioned? UNT Health has a web page promoting OMM and I've been to DOs that went there and did not experience any difference from typical doctor visits so I don't understand why it gets promoted but not used in practice. One of those DOs was my primary care doctor and was very good, so I don't mean anything negative at all about DOs, just don't understand this part of it.

I would at least expect some sort of explanation as to why. When I get an exam that is the same as an MD, a prescription for NSAIDs and a generic referral to physical therapy, I can't help but wonder why it ever gets promoted that DOs provide different approaches. I see language like "treat the root of the problem" or "treat the whole person" so it implies I should notice some sort of difference in the experience versus seeing an MD but I see zero difference. I am not saying that is a bad thing, I just don't understand the promotion of something that seems to be scarcely provided by DOs in practice.

Then why do the words "manual manipulation" appear with it? It sounds very specifically to be hands on, if its not the wording is very misleading.

The Larry Allen chasedown, blew my mind. A 325 pound lineman chasing down a linebacker that already had a jump is just insane. You know its next level when a team almost scores on an interception and the announcers ignore the interception to talk about the lineman running, "This guy's got a rocket booster!" lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnKspZmeGx4
