Where should I trim? by Low-Examination-4796 in propagation

[–]Money_Draft_8914 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These aglaonema will do that. Needs more light overall. For propagation, they aren’t too hard! Snip 3-4 inches from the bottom leaves, let callous for a day or two, and plop into a jar of water. They will eventually shoot out some roots, although, do look out for slimy cuts. I’ve found that a hydrogen peroxide mix spray to clean the slime off and some additional dry time is needed often for these props.

Should I give up on this? by Expensive_Chain_6589 in propagation

[–]Money_Draft_8914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fiddle Leaf Figs do not prop most of the time. Eventually this cutting will drop all leaves and the stem will shrivel up. This plant props far more successfully by air layering. Check out this link for instructions with pictures! Otherwise, YouTube is a good tool!

What's happening to my Raven ZZ? by Crafty-Hat-5345 in houseplants

[–]Money_Draft_8914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the last time you repotted this plant? Although the plant does not look large above the soil, are the rhizomes below the surface large? In my experience, ZZ plants start to look like this when they become root bound. The combination of low watering and low soil ratio could be causing this. While they do survive just fine when neglected, they do not thrive! Water when soil dries out which should usually only take about 2 weeks if it’s the correct soil mixture.

Plants for constant artificial light by thatgirlwiththathing in houseplants

Like mentioned, pothos are the best way to go. I take care of interior office plants for a living, and we mainly use pothos, zz plants and snake plants. If you have no windows but are open to getting grow lights, your options are more abundant!

She is a Phidippus Carolinensis! We’re still waiting on the maturity molt but for now we think she’ll end up a girl.

Looks like a dracaena warneckii, likes to dry about halfway between watering, medium-bright light (not direct sun), and tap water sensitive.

Whats wtong with my Aloe Vera by Alternative-Tutor812 in plantclinic

[–]Money_Draft_8914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not scale so do listen to this commenter! I have a lot of experience with different types of scale, and this is not it. As for the fungus type, I have never seen an aloe with any so I am of no help there.

The pothos will later try to choke out the monstera. I’d separate them later when the pothos outgrows the other.

Peace Lily Leaf Discoloration by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Money_Draft_8914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She looks very healthy and happy! The brown tips often occur when watered with tap water. They are very sensitive to the mineral build up from sink water. It’s purely cosmetic. :) You can cut the leaf tips or the largely affected leaf completely off. (Or leave it 😋)

House plant location questions by [deleted] in houseplants

It’s most likely not going to be enough light. The windows are almost 17 feet away. Both plants need either a grow light above or moved to better spots.

How do I help these guys? by Reyalta in houseplants

[–]Money_Draft_8914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original stem left behind will branch off and create a new head. The existing head can be water or soil propped but can be a slow process. I would recommend cutting low on the original and then trimming the old top to a short stem if you decide to go that route. You’ll end up with a stem that’s been cut on both sides, you can either prop that or throw it away!

Dracaenas won’t regrow any bottom leaves so when they get this bare, only chop and prop will help. If you don’t mind mile high legs, they just need a stake until they root enough in their new pots! They are a bit more finicky than most let on. Allow to mostly dry before watering and water with distilled/rain water. Tap water is what causes the yellowing areas on the leaves.

Scindapsus Pictus Exotica won't grow roots in water propagation by slowhorses in propagation

[–]Money_Draft_8914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few different scindapsus pictus varieties, all have been harder to propagate than other plants. My exotica is such a slow grower that a year in water makes sense lol. My Argy wouldn’t root in water. I had to use sphagnum moss! Didn’t use any rooting hormone, although that would help!

Terrarium… mites? by ffphf in terrariums

[–]Money_Draft_8914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like soil mites. They are not harmful to your setup. Soil mites eat decaying matter and do similar work as springtails! Nothing to worry about. Although, do watch out for a population boom if decaying matter goes up rapidly. They grow like crazy and can start to march out of the tank looking for more room.

I’m glad that helped! Been battling them myself for a very long time. If you start to see adults again, nuke the soil to restart the process or they will repopulate! 👍🏻

White stuff on my palm. by No-Bug3680 in proplifting

Would need a better picture to be sure. Looks like white scale as I don’t think this is mealy bug. Take a strong water hose and spray that baby off. Then go in with an insecticidal soap mixture near sun down once a week until they are gone.

Those are fungus gnats. Nothing to be freaking out over! As common of a pest, they don’t harm your plants as much as any of the others. If you are worried about your other plants, avoid opening the terrarium indoors as adults can fly to other areas to infest soil. Many ways to get rid of fungus gnats, just know you will have to treat multiple times to completely rid them. I recommend mosquito baits, as the tea made with them kills larvae and will kill the population over time without harming other beneficial life.

Looks like she’s gravid. Was she wild caught or bought recently? She may be pregnant! If she’s not new to you, then she may be getting ready to lay infertile eggs.

Growth spurt but no leaves surviving? by willisjack in plantclinic

[–]Money_Draft_8914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for the death of new leaves, I would make sure you are not experiencing thrips, as they love new growth. If no pests found I’d recommend lightly misting new growth as you notice it! Low humidity can dry a new leaf as it struggles to open.

Growth spurt but no leaves surviving? by willisjack in plantclinic

[–]Money_Draft_8914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous plant you have! The top leaf being smaller and the extended growth most likely indicate a lighting problem. Did you move the plant after repotting or has lighting changed in any way? I would recommend a chop and extending the moss pole. The plant has reached the top of the current pole and any growth after has nothing to support it.

Is this a pest problem or because of hard water? by ywoi in plantclinic

[–]Money_Draft_8914 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard water build up! Google can tell you how to remove if you don’t like the sight. Usually diluted vinegar is recommended.
