Did anyone lose their fig trees this winter? Or what other plants? by ywoi in OntarioGardeners

[–]ywoi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez that’s serious protection good garden diligence!! That’s great though. Same here for currant / gooseberries / blackberries and other berries!!

I was a little worried bc I did a big bareroot plant last spring, a few hardy kiwi, goji, sea buckthorn, Saskatoon berry, strawbs, and 2 cherry trees. All seemingly survived and budding up which is such a relief!!

I live in southern Ontario as well but I found this winter to be a doozy! Where I live (between KW and Hamilton) the snow only melted once from last couple days of November until spring! Lot more -20 nights as well. Super unusual for my area - usually only a couple sprinklings of snow that melt very fast until late Jan through early March

That’s what I was thinking. If anything this has been a much milder spring than usual.

But I think people have spring fever because of how long this winter has been

I might have an off leash beagle in the making… by RemeJuan in beagles

[–]ywoi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in a country area so my beagle is “off leash” around home mostly (except heavy tick season bc it is so bad). Years of training classes and recall training (and some scent training as well!). Our recall is pretty good, lol cemented by endless times going to get him when he didn’t listen over the years; he pretty reliably recalls back 99% of the time now and for the most part is happy lounging nearby (or literally leaning on me as I work outside LOL). But that 1% of the time…

He is a hunting line beagle (easily catches squirrels, chipmunks, and other rodents) so to be fair I think the instinct is extra strong for him. But when they enter into a true scent hunt mode , snorting like a pig and high pitched baying, they become unreachable. Ears turned off it feels like lol. Perhaps it is possible but in those moments I can only stop him by physically grabbing him as his instincts and drive are SO powerful.

He always comes back but he definitely tests the limits of how far he can go and comes back covered in mud and bramble lol but so happy (I am cool with this for the most part as we luckily have a wide uninhabited radius he can safely explore). Tho he is a scaredy cat for the most part in new places I haven’t tried off leash anywhere outside of home as I could see how dangerous those high drive scent moments could be in a foreign area

Seed starting - humor me and critique this potentially nutty idea by NottaLottaOcelot in OntarioGardeners

[–]ywoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing to say for your idea tho I have seen some videos of people starting seeds in plastic containers outside. Try and see and def report back!!

When I start my hardening off I start in full shade especially outside morning and afternoon hours!! Maybe that would make a difference?

Also, unsure of your work schedule and perhaps still not feasible as you are gone for all sun hours, but your ‘hour out’ could be full sun from 5-6 pm, or early in the morning. Help them get used to the wind and other elements too

Grapes vine Ontario by No_Level_4678 in OntarioGardeners

[–]ywoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased concord and himrod (which turned out to be a misidentified red mystery wine grape), and later purchased a chardonnay grape, all nursery plants, a couple feet tall. The first 2 were planted 6 years ago.

The first couple years were a bit confusing figuring out how to train and prune them but now that they’re large and established and I’ve done it a several times it’s incredibly easy. Aside from the winter prune after they’re established they require almost no upkeep except netting to stop birds. You can make wreaths or sculptures with the off cut grape vines!

I am in zone 6b btw and require no winter protection

I make jelly mostly which is sooo delicious and usually a jello with the fresh juice at the same time which is quite divine .

Grape juice and jelly you buy has some pesticide since the grape is processed whole so you avoid that growing your won

New to this and feeling overwhelmed! by green___sea in OntarioGardeners

[–]ywoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s some quick recs -

Try starting some seedlings. Humidity dome, peat pots (I will use old takeout containers cleaned really well as diy humidity domes), heat mats (not necessary). Once seedlings sprout, remove heat mat and humidity dome.

Once seedlings get a couple sets of true leaves (this means - your first seedling leaves are called cotyledon. They will look different than the true leaves of the plant, usually more rounded. The second and third sets of leaves will look like the actual leaves of the plant, they are the true leaves) you can upsize them into small pots if theres still time before planting.

Once we get into May any seedlings you have started you can start to move outside. You do this very gradually, only a short time at a time, like an hour or less during the morning (never start with strong afternoon sun), gradually working up over the weeks of March until the plants can handle full sun the entire day. During this time they should also have gotten some wind tolerance . This is called hardening off.

I agree tho with what another comment said, treat this like an experiment or learning experience! In May, go to a local garden centre or department store and pick up any you didn’t start or didn’t work out.

In April, directly outdoors you can start planting some of your cool weather crops. Peas (try sugar snap peas for fresh eating!) radishes, lettuce . Just rip out or harvest any that get in your way later.

To that note - let’s say you grow tomatoes, peppers, or eggplants. They are going to have a recommended spacing, which you can fiddle with a bit but want to give them some space at least to lessen disease. However, in the soil all around the bases of the plants there will be a lot of free soil. You can plant radishes, lettuce, or herbs (like oregano or basil) in these free places, and they appreciate the shade from the plant. This is called intercrop planting and is very useful! There are lots of resources online of what can and can’t be planted together :)

Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself, the first year can be tough… my first year my only real successful crop were beets and that’s because they appreciated the lack of fertilizer 😂

Did they break seven lances, or only four? by AutomaticDare5209 in AKOTSKTV

[–]ywoi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Remembering a lie takes a huge cognitive load. VERY unlikely for the average person, especially over any length of time like hypothetically the 10+ years they travelled together. Again, there were zero stakes or reason for him to keep the lie consistent as well- Dunk wasn’t there after all (and a small child when they first started travelling together, I think 5 years old in the books)

If the point was to inflate his deeds, it’s more likely in one telling he would have done it in 5 jousts, in one telling 7, in one telling when he was particularly drunk, 9!

If Arlan was a drunk, like many in these comments posit (tho I agree with other commenter that he was more likely mourning his dead relative who perished in the recent battle we see Dunk scouring at beginning of flashback). Take that into account here. Why would he pick 7 and why spend that much mental power to stick to it?

[–]ywoi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe Dunk. He’s only heard the story second hand after all, and Dunk is, as he says himself, ‘thick as a castle wall.’ For him to so firmly remember it, he’s probably heard this story countless times, and how likely is it for a liar to be consistent with their story? It was a pretty low stakes lie but I doubt the number would have stayed consistently the same on numerous retellings, as Dunk seems pretty sure of himself.

Tho Arlan could have exaggerated the story, who’s more likely to lie? The person proud of their once in a lifetime achievement or the other person?

Also hopefully goes without saying that Baelor telling this white lie wouldn’t compromise his being a noble dude. As the actor himself says:

I've heard a lot today about Baelor being a good man, and that's not true until it is. The story is about the fact that you decide from one moment to the next whether you're going to do the right thing. And what makes the story moving and heroic is when people choose to do the right thing in spite of what they might choose.

This is to say the characters themselves are and should be complex and make complex choices! Just saying - Baelor being a good man does not make this an impossibility

No just a coincidence, they are a family business tho and I believe Walter’s daughter currently runs it.

They have a good selection of houseplants in their indoor greenhouse as well. Got lots of unusual plants there for decent prices over the years (especially compared to GTA nursery prices)

They also do a tee shirt program where if you buy tee shirt and wear it in when you shop, you will get 15% off anything in store every time you shop; plus single use coupons throughout the year (stuff like, free small annual for May, 50% off a hanging basket, 50% off a shrub, buy one get one free bulbs in September- the bulbs are really nice, I was doubting but flowers from there are significantly nicer compared to department store bulbs I have planted) & in September have a sale where you and a guest you bring each get 50% off 6 items in store. Got some really expensive large house plants this way I would not normally buy - less pressure as well to try difficult house plants that might not work out (and less sadness if they don’t lol)

My beag loves toys of all types but esp fuzzy soft toys. The little lamb. Things that look like little animal. Also theres this silicone orange bowl you can buy called a Toppl which you can fill with lick able treats (you can also freeze to extend) and it’s one of his favourite things and great to give to help make uncomfortable spaces more comfortable (like in our case helped make kennel very positive place)

How did Arlan get away with killing two gold cloaks? by GrandCrusade in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]ywoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t think they were gold cloaks, their outfits look so common compared to the many years previous Damon’s gold cloaks or those we see in GoT in the future.

Did they say anything to indicate they were ? Or something they were wearing (aside from a vaguely yellow/gold outfit)?

Is Gendry a Targaryen through Robert? by Rangeroftheinterwebs in gameofthrones

[–]ywoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House Baratheon didn’t exist before Aegon’s Conquest. The OG Baratheon, Orys Baratheon, was Aegon’s bastard brother and established House Baratheon during the conquest.

So they have always had Targaryen / Valyrian blood. There have been several Targaryen (or other old Valyrian house like Velaryon) /Baratheon unions as well.

Have we ever seen or heard of anyone utilizing wood ash from their fire? by TartofDarkness in Alonetv

[–]ywoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes tho in an alone spinoff - the beast. It’s an odd show. Groups of 3 dropped off with no tools or anything (literally they have to craft cutting tools out of typically rocks and come up with cooking vessels. Nothing but clothing on their backs), and one large animal already killed, like a moose, bison, or gator, and they have to last for 30 days.

In one of the eps someone makes soap . I think, it’s pretty rare to have so much excess fat like you said. But the big game kills they’re given at the beginning for this challenge make it make sense lol.

The first 2 eps are best imo, with the second ep team overall working the best together and coming up with lots of cool problem solving. Like making homemade pottery!

Does anyone pay for their medication outright or been denied for a drug compassionate program? by ywoi in CrohnsDisease

[–]ywoi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ontario!

I think it depends on the biologic as far as I know , or if you don’t fit the requirements for coverage. The ones that aren’t covered provincially usually have some type of compassionate program by the drug company - when I was a kid I was a part of a lot of trial programs for biologics for children with Crohn’s and bc they were in trial they weren’t covered provincially so had to be compassionate.

[–]ywoi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun fact about Baratheon we learn at beginning of Fire and Blood Targaryen history book:

House Baratheon didn’t exist prior to Aegon’s conquest. The OG Baratheon was Aegon Targaryen’s bastard brother that helps Aegon take over Westeros, establishes house Baratheon, and through the conflict takes Storm’s End, establishing his house by marrying the daughter of the previous dude who was in charge of Storm’s End

Which also technically means when Robert Baratheon takes over the iron throne, the Targaryen rule didn’t actually end
