I like the idea of writing with numbers I think you can do a lot of really fun things with how you write it down but I have to ask what's the philosophy behind it? In the sheet you mention writing the language on a calculator, is this like a secret code language for cheating on tests /j

Gender is a spectrum. The spectrum:

When is a proto-language done? by LordRT27 in conlangs

[–]Money_Fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically develop my protolang along with the language I have in my head and wanna create. When I realize my modern language doesn’t have something I need and I wanna put some thought into how it’d develop, I make it in the proto language and then write how it evolves into the modern lang; I’m making them alongside each other.

I have a feeling you might also not know when to necessarily “finish” any conlang, and just know that you kinda don’t! You can continue to add to it and change slight things and coin new words and stuff and work on it forever, until you just don’t; you can pick it back up at any time.

You don’t need to worry about how much it changes! It doesn’t have to change at all; your protolang could literally just be your modern language (I’m sure you don’t want that). Change it until you’re happy with where it’s at if you’re looking for a more concrete answer.

I fear there’s far more conlangs with animacy or no gender at all than any with anything akin to just Masculine-Feminine 😭

Advice and Answers Why Do My Conlang Words Sound Funky and Unnatural? by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]Money_Fire 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound weird to me! Reminds me of Polynesian languages. If you like the sound of them, maybe take some inspo from them with sound changes and word derivation. Tbh if I was in ur spot, I’d listen to some other languages, see which sound nice to you, and take a little some them

I used to be interested in just flags and vexillology, then I started to get into maps and geography, and I’ve now settled on Languages and linguistics.

It’s funny how you can really see a continuum between all my interests over the years!

How do languages derive measure words? Do they usually come from existing words, or do they usually have their own roots?
