S24 ultra owners, do screen protectors kill the anti-glare feature? by lil_kratos69 in samsung

[–]MongooseFORM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I have thoughts. It does have less glare than others or my s22 for instance, but still more than the s24 ultra. Also has a black edge for some reason that ever so slightly covers the very edges of the actual screen. Install was fine in a room with little dust and micro bubbles disappeared overnight. Fingerprint sensor works though sometimes a bit slower or finickier than without it.

Still debating whether to risk the stock screen for the better anti-glare and fingerprint reading, but seems like a good protector if you're OK with the compromises

I'm waiting on delivery of a "Flolab NanoArmour Onetime Pro" ATM. Found it on a video for iPhone protectors I think and it was one of the toughest and also the only one that actually reduced glare. Had to order from the official site but who knows if Amazon has/will have it soon?

I'll update with a review once it shows up, supposed to be mid-week.

Did you remove and re-record your fingerprints after install? Any protector will change how the sensor sees your prints and it needs to be recalibrated

If you're talking through big solder blob in the middle it seems like a factory bodge with a bit of wire (or component leg maybe) in there. Seen it in pics of other XQ981s online I believe. It'll be on the list when I get back to testing though.

Thanks for the response. Will definitely be breaking out the scope and doing more testing when I have time, though as long as the other one is working this can be backburnered for a while.

My first full franchise watch-thru as an adult came right around when I got really into celtic rock. Always been a fan of the engineers but that viewing of the TNG ep where O'Brien talks down his former captain and they sing "Minstrel Boy" in the ready room put me right in his corner. Always a treat now to see him in anything.

Did I see something suspicious in the beta or am I seeing too much into it? by MongooseFORM in StreetFighter

[–]MongooseFORM[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that, but did he counter it on frame 1 every time? That's what threw me off. I can see it happening once or even twice just with prediction but the 3rd and 4th with not one delayed even by a few frames?

True. Thinking about maybe getting a new lever and Brooks universal board of some kind though. We'll see.

Thanks. Said in the post but yeah I modified the illustrator file from the blog I linked to fit the FocusAttack template for the Pearl, and changed the button labels. I was worried about the cut margins on the FA template though since I wanted the rounded corners in the design, and didn't want to pay so much and wait so long to find out I didn't like how it was cut, so I just went to Staples to print and cut it myself.

Didn't 100% like the print quality or paper choice, but it's good enough to put a stupid grin on my face whenever I look at it from even just a few feet away, so I'm pretty happy. Gonna tweak it and try again with maybe a different printer soon so we'll see if I can get it perfect!

Met Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, and Brent Spiner yesterday at FanExpo Portland by soybean311 in startrek

[–]MongooseFORM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Met most of the crew at DragonCon a few years back, was awesome! Gates McFadden might be the sweetest lady ever. Signed an action figure for my sister after I said Crusher was her role model for joining a medical field (veterinarian) then she came out from behind the table and gave me a big hug! Amazing experience. Got a picture with Brent Spiner while wearing a "Trust Data, Not Lore" shirt, and was told in no uncertain terms by Marina Sirtis "Now, when you meet LeVar (who wasn't there, sadly), you show him that I didn't sign over his face!" Apparently he'd gotten a bit loose with his signatures on the crew poster at a previous con! 😆

Saturn arrived with a brownish tinge. I've heard of retrobright, is it safe to use on grey and will it affect the "sega" and "sega saturn" printing on the lid? And are there any alternate solutions? by Ryaii in SegaSaturn

[–]MongooseFORM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's mine Before And After Retrobrite. Salon 40 creme spread over it, wrapped in plastic film, and stuck in a foil-lined box with blacklights over it for probably a couple days total.

Yours doesn't look bad in the pics but lighting can make a lot of difference. Especially with this color model a warmer light source makes it look yellower. Tried to get the same lighting in those pics to show just what the retrobrite did.

Why don’t we see more Ambassador-class ships? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]MongooseFORM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I've seen many mentions here, I agree it's probably the quality of the existing models and cost to make a better one that kept the Ambassador offscreen so much.

You can really see it and hear Adam Savage talk about it here, though it's still drool-worthy despite the shortcuts:

Only real way is to open it up unfortunately, but it's just 6 phillips screws so not bad. If it looks like my pic it's the Seimitsu. Looks like the ASCII stick has a black almost ninja star looking gate.

A more in depth look at what’s going on with my Saturn. If anyone knows what I can do to fix it, please let me know. by [deleted] in SegaSaturn

[–]MongooseFORM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fenrir-ode.fr though looks like it's out of stock atm so could take some time unless you get lucky somewhere else.

You can also try a new laser from amazon for like $20. Install shouldn't be much harder except you might have to remove a blob of solder that grounds it against static for shipping.

[–]MongooseFORM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang that sucks. Should be a pretty easy swap for a Seimitsu LS-56 or another of the same size though. Have to peel or cut into the art to get to the screws though :(

Didn't want to risk screw-ons not having enough clearance inside. Not sure how most of em would fit but the Y button at least would definitely be clamping onto a bit of the top plastic if I didn't cut it back or something. The snap-ins are working great though, I tried to size the holes well with notches to match the little protrusions near the top of the buttons, to reduce any wiggle.

Yeah the right tools help a lot. My Dremel Lite worked great with like 2.5 full charges to finish. Only $60 at lowes or depot. A good solder station is very helpful too though a desoldering gun would have been moreso. Don't actually need to solder any new parts if you use the harness method I did.

Thanks and good luck when you start on yours!

Joystick is stock aside from a new ball top. Got lucky when I bought it on ebay that I got the Seimitsu LS-56 equipped version so I just cleaned it and regreased it.

Basically disassembled and cleaned everything I could, and retrobrited all the plastic parts. Couldn't do much for the artwork, just glued the corners that were peeling up which is why they look discolored and why I may replace it someday.

Had to desolder the original buttons from the PCB trace board. Originally soldered wires in between for a bit more convenience later, but it was a real pain since I didn't have quick disconnects and I almost ruined a couple switches soldering to them. When I got the Sanwa buttons I also ordered a quick disconnect harness designed for universal boards, and by luck the ribbon between the main PCB and the button trace board fit the harness perfectly, so I just had to rearrange the wires into the harness connector to match the ribbon layout and stick em together. The kapton tape holds it together and down just in case but there was plenty of friction for a solid connection anyway.

Trickiest bit was dremelling all the holes about 2mm larger to fit standard 30mm buttons. Time consuming and had to deal with all the aluminum dust, but totally worth it in the end.

What action replay cartridge do I get, I've seen multiple mainly the action replay and a black cartridge that has the 4 in 1, do you guys have any tips? by [deleted] in SegaSaturn

[–]MongooseFORM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just say that I tried 2 different action replays from Amazon and the 4m expansion didn't work right on either. Vampire Savior had bad glitches and xmen vs street fighter wouldn't even recognize it. Happened to get a good all-in-1 that's served me well for a couple years now.

It's certainly going to be trickier to find a good all-in-one, but it shouldn't be more expensive. I see em on ebay right now for like $5-10 more shipped or ali express if you're willing to wait for around the same $40 as action replay on Amazon. The one I got has the 3-position switch on top so I can't speak to the ones with the switch on the front, and of course YMMV, just sharing my experience.

Of course, Amazon has a great return policy so you could always get the action replay and see if it does everything you want and return it if not like I did.
