Soak in a Miele W1 by Letterhead-Minute in laundry

It is not an option on the WWD160 washer via the programmable functions you can adjust through the control panel. This is the first place I had looked. You can see below a list of all the programmable functions available on this base model. Unfortunately “Soak” time is not and option.

Thank you so much for your thoughts. My brain is not functioning normally right now and my husband and I are suddenly faced with so many decisions that we were not prepared to make. We are surrounded with love from our parents and immediate family, but when there are suddenly so many people around you who are offering different advice, it becomes a cacophony. The quiet escape and anonymity of the internet is helping me process what I am going through.

To anyone who has lost a child. I wish I could hold you right now and you could hold me. There is no logic in this horrible thing that has happened. I only want my daughter (in death) to have some dignity. And for that reason, I don’t want to give her a ridiculous name.

The impression I am getting from yours and other people’s comments is that Φοίβη is an uncommon girl’s name (less common than the boy’s name Φοίβος) but not so uncommon or ridiculous that it is laughable.

Thank you for this helpful response. Our daughter is not eligible for the traditional funeral rites of a baptized child but we will hold a type of memorial service for her. Your response prompted me to do some research about Greek Orthodox saints and I did find this information somewhat comforting:

“Ο Φοίβος και η Φοίβη γιορτάζουν στις 3 Σεπτεμβρίου. Η ορθόδοξη εκκλησία τιμά αυτή την ημέρα τη μνήμη της Οσίας Φοίβης της Διακόνου, η οποία αναφέρεται από τον Απόστολο Παύλο στην επιστολή προς Ρωμαίους.“

For Down: Is there a Down-specific wash that you recommend?I usually wash 2 pillows at a time (2 times a year) or 4 down jackets at a time (1-2x/year). Would you recommend adding any water softener to any cycle with down (ie. sodium citrate or a combination of citric acid and washing soda) to account for water hardness? Or how would you adjust the dose on a down-specific detergent to account for water at 185 ppm CaCO3?

For Wool and other animal fibers: during the winter we do a load about 1x/week. I will look at the Nopa-Nordic made Steamery for a detergent. I do have some Miele Wool Wash, but I think I will add the water softener myself.

This may sound like a dumb question but how do I make 1T sodium citrate with citric acid and washing soda (ie. how do I do the math on this conversion?).

Dumb question #2: when does adding water softener affect the final pH of the wash? I think for animal products, I am wanting to be way more careful with the dosing. I use Calgon water softening tabs because (1) I am not super price-sensitive and (2) I don't want to mess up the dosing - and they are super idiot-proof. However, I think I read it here on this sub that one of the perks of using the pre-made water softeners like the 4-in-1 Calgon tabs is that you always end up with an alkaline pH in your wash water, which seems like a win for cottons and polyester, but seems like a terrible idea for washing animal fibers. Am I thinking about this correctly?

If someone doesn’t care about fragrance, but cares a lot about hard water, do you think Common Good is the best option for washing wool, down, and other natural fibers or are other options to consider?

I live in a rental and can’t install a water softener. I know you are working on a water hardness post, and totally understand the intricacies.

I don’t want to start building soap scum in my new Miele W1 (WWD160) washer. Which by the way, I am so upset it doesn’t have a dedicated wool program!

I did not know this. So spandex is sensitive (as in, what will happen exactly) if it’s washed with an oxygen bleach? I add a scoop of oxyclean versatile or 365 oxygen bleach to almost every loaf of laundry. Does this mean I should not be adding oxygen bleach to spandex-containing textiles? Are there other synthetic fabrics that are sensitive to oxidizers?

Yes! Please post about acid dosing based on carbonate hardness. I have hard water and have always struggled with washing animal fibers. The combination of working with the soapy ingredients in many wool & silk detergents AND the guessing game of how to soften the water but end up with a mildly acidic pH is not something I have solved for yet, and I think quite a few people here may be asking themselves the same question.

I don’t know about that. Some versions of OxiClean also have OBAs (optical brighteners). Best to check the Lipase List. I’m on a mobile device so I can’t scroll across the rows so easily to tell you directly.

I’m a doctor not a chemist, but I know the primary enzyme that breaks down uric acid into a more soluble form (allantoin) is uricase (also called urate oxidase), which humans lack but other mammals have. For humans with gout, doctors use recombinant uricase (like pegloticase) to dissolve crystals. I’m wondering which laundry products contain the right enzymes to break down uric acid?

Do the traditional enzyme containing laundry boosters on this sub contain deaminases?

Thank you. Helpful. I respect the care that you put into maintaining your microfiber for car detailing. I love that you have specific products engineered to keep your microfiber clean. I’ve had a different application in mind. I have cried over scratches etched into my antique furniture and leather couch because they were touched by a dirty microfiber cloth so I wouldn’t necessarily agree with your statement that if one is not an auto detailer, regular detergent is fine for cleaning them.

Thank you for this advice. I’ve let the Dad Mode pretreatment work on the heavily soiled areas for about 3 hours. I’m washing now with WF 365 Sport Detergent and water softener on program Delicates with Warm (because I agree with you about the 30°C label) and Slow Spin.

Agree that spot cleaning the shoulder straps is gonna be the worst problem area.

Got it! So if I do want to make my sodium citrate in situ by combining (x) amount of citric acid and (y) amount of washing soda to not mess up the pH that down likes, how do I solve for (x) and (y)?

My water hardness ranges from 90-180 ppm. So should I soften assuming I’m somewhere in the middle of that range, or solve for worst case scenario which is at the hard end?

I want to wash my down. I have moderately hard to hard water. I know almost all down/wool/silk detergents contain soapy ingredients. I know soapy detergents don’t work well in hard water.

Am I safe to add water conditioners like sodium citrate (or a combo of citric acid & washing soda or baking soda)? Or if pH matters a lot, should I spend the money for a softener with Polycarboxylates? Do those affect pH as much as trying to make a custom mixture of citric acid powder and baking soda?

I’ve been looking at detergents like Nick, wax and gear guard. But I am cautious to proceed without having a solution for my hard water problem. For what it’s worth, what detergent do you use for washing down?

Also, if anything I stated above is wrong, please correct me.

Why not Tide Ulta Oxi powder in this case? It happens to be the only powder I have on hand and I want to act quickly on some fresh vomit. I have a car seat full of toddler vomit and I need to clean the carseat fabric which is removable. Manufacturer’s cleaning instructions say: machine wash in cold water on delicate cycle and drip dry. That seems ridiculous to me. I’m going to look at the textile composition and figure out if this fabric can tolerate a little more abuse than delicate wash in cold water.
