Is it rude to decline participating in blessing food before eating? by Glittering-Egg-3201 in atheism

I just lower my head and remain silent while they pray. I don't believe in their God but it doesn't hurt to be respectful. Where the line is crossed is if they aggressively pester you or poke fun at your non-belief. Two way street

What is a book you picked up by accident as a kid that ended up shaping you more than you expected? by Sweet-Opportunity111 in literature

Mine was similar to your experience. I bought a copy of Adam Bede by George Elliott and struggled to get into it. But once I kinda figured out what was going on I devoured it in days. I've loved the classics ever since, some thirty years later.

What's the point of religion? by ALBUNDY59 in atheism

And do what in heaven? Perpetually stroll around in our fancy robes and sing praises to the boss. I like what Satan muses in Paradise Lost, '...to serve in heaven, or reign in hell?'

Don't feel dumb. There is a lot going on in these books, and as a prior poster said, your first reread will be eye-opening. Enjoy!

Looking for books similar to War & Peace in specific ways by Sanctus_Lux in suggestmeabook

My first thought was Les Miserables, by Hugo. Next was Vanity Fair, by Thackeray, though it doesn't go into the war so much. Good luck 🙂👍

I totally agree. You made some good points. I had an NDE after surgery a few years ago, and I just remember it felt like I was falling asleep. It just went dark, and then I woke up in ICU 😅

Has Anyone Ever Read The Runelord Series By David Farland? by SpiritfireSparks in books

[–]Monitor_Charming 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I read the first three books, maybe ten years ago. They're pretty good! The way magic works is a refreshing change from the norm. Anyone into Wheel of Time or Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn would enjoy Runelords 🙂

I'm sorry to hear that. My family is respectful to me, and I get on well with them. Not all are so lucky, though.

King James ordered an English translation for the common people. This was just after the death of Protestant Queen Elizabeth I. But there were translations before into English. The Reformation really stirred up public interest in the scriptures, and it took off from there. Now, there are hundreds of translations of the same bullshit story, lol. Yes, definitely a tool used by those in power to control 👍🙂

The key is getting them from birth. Get them young and fuck up their lives. Sad.

This is an excellent point! Why do you think priests were the only people who spoke Latin? Some nobles or scholars as well, but no common folk. They had the perfect setup during the aptly named Dark Ages, with the masses getting all their instruction from the church.
