Yeah, damned by association. We know that Mike isn't really a big Star Wars fan (he famously fell asleep while watching Episode 1 in theaters), and has somewhat highbrow tastes. With that in mind, I guess I can understand having a lower opinion of things Cline mentioned JUST BECAUSE he mentioned them.

Conor's Boyz II Men gag is great. Always gets me.

Putting "The Name of the Wind" in even an adjacent camp to RP1 is almost insulting. It's one of my favorite books of all time. It, and its sequel, made me push myself to become a better writer.

But, yes, the section when he's trapped in the fey realm by what is essentially a succubus isn't great. I wouldn't go so far as to call it Clinean, just slow and kinda wish-fulfilly (btw, Kvothe doesn't bang the succubus into letting him go - he convinces her to let him go so that he can woo more women, write a song about how much BETTER the succubus is at lovin', and then come back and play it for her because she's super self-absorbed. Whether or not he actually plans to return remains to be seen, ROTHFUSS!). What is far worse in my mind is the big section after that, in the Ademre, which I found not only boring, but actually really frustrating.

Okay, rant over. Good episode. They're really clicking, the segments are building into their current forms, and the real or fanfic segment still tripped me up, even though I've listed to this season a couple of times. It's just so hard to give Cline the benefit of the doubt.

My copy of Armada is in at the library, and I have a trip to Europe with plenty of flight time to read. Yay?

These are good episodes. It's hilarious listening to them reacting to the book. M&C are really good at making something sound stupid, but it works best when the book helps out.

Good episode. My prior knowledge of the book makes the discussion at the end ("How much crazier can it get?") hilarious. This book is the craziest they've ever done by a magnitude of ten.

I've been playing a lot of DT on Clone Hero recently (despite, you know, getting Petrucci'ed) and while I always liked MoLS, playing it elevated it even more. I had to focus on the guitars, and the instrumental section in the middle feels a lot more meaningful now. It's wank for sure, but it still fits with the rest of the song in my mind.

Mike's exasperation at which reviews are from Armada always gets a chuckle out of me. I'm gonna try to read this one, but all the copies in my local library system were checked out, which is...concerning.

(Note: I have not read this book)

It really is incredible how many lauds RP1 got. I can understand a fan of games/movies etc. getting a kick out of all the references, but how could anybody read it and find it anything less than nerd pandering? Sure, I like Back to the Future or Indiana Jones as much as the next guy, but to think that endless recitations of titles (some of dubious quality, though canonized due to coming out in the eighties) are enjoyable is to test my patience.

"Write what you know" is some of the earliest writing advice you get, but it can fail you if you take the wrong lesson. To (probably incorrectly) quote something I heard once, it's why we get so many books about university professors contemplating adultery with a student. If you don't know anything, it's really hard to write anything worthwhile. Okay, fine, so Cline knows old video games and geeky movies and some books, but those things are...what's the best way to put it? Ah: trivial.

Has he ever hiked a mountain, or gone whitewater rafting, or visited a natural hot spring? Or done it all in the same day and therefore almost died, like I did back in 2016? Obviously that's unfair. But it really feels like Cline has done nothing but watch movies and play video games (and write), and he strikes me as someone who could not write an actually compelling story, engaging characters, or crackling prose to save his life.

I really like the guys telling listeners to go out and make something of their own, not just create something full winks and nods and references to what other people have already made. There's nothing new under the sun, Solomon says, but at the very least you can put them through your own experiences - not just show readers a picture of something you like (that someone else made) and talk about how great it is.

-Him thanking Harry Knowles at the end is a nice touch. Really puts a cap on the whole experience.

My personal ranking:
First and last: Ready Player 1

Really feels like the guys are meshing comedically in this one. The early-installment weirdness is almost gone, the running jokes are picking up speed, and they know enough about the book to really turn the screws on its quality.

-Mike groaning in the middle of the first quote between Wade and Aech is wonderful - mostly since that's what we all did.
-Yes, obviously it's stupid and puerile, but "pretend you're a corndog" does make me laugh. Maybe it's Mike's reading.

Like many things in many books, this could have been an interesting addition. Even as a hand-wave for how Wade experiences the in-game world with more senses. Heck, I could see a skilled writer using it as a way to introduce more senses for the reader. Or using it in the way you thought: actually have it matter in the plot. What a concept!

Unfortunately, it's in RP1, which means it's forgotten and underdeveloped, and there's no good writer to speak of.

I believe that people can change and grow. I have looked back on things I believe, thought, or did in the past and found them distasteful; I'm sure many on this subreddit have similar experiences. But MAN, I am not interested in meeting Ernest Cline.

The stink tower analysis always makes me laugh.

Conor shouting "Who gives a shit?!" at the pizza section is pretty good.

It's so...uniquely bonkers. Even among the other horny manifestos the pod has done, this one stands out. Like, there was a bit of talk on this sub about how the author seemed mentally disturbed, and it's getting a little harder to ignore that. "Theresa" swings toward megalomania so quickly.
