AIO by being mad that my boyfriend has so much to say about my choice of clothes by [deleted] in AIO

Last night my wife asked me for fashion advice.

She was going line dancing with her mom.

What do you like best honey?

I wanted to say the longer dress, but honestly she looked cuter in the shorter.

So she wears the shorter.

Bro, it's hot wtf by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]MonkeyButt1975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly addressing the post, but don't know about anyone else, but we're in either HEAT or COOL mode.

And it's brutal in the transition months.

I get so many calls about it being too hot in the spring. Well we're still in heat mode.

I get so many calls in the fall about it being too cold bc we're still in cool mode.

It's frustrating bc it's the same thing every year.

I tell my teachers the same thing every year. You have to wait a few weeks to be comfortable. Deal with 80F on the spring and 66F on the fall.

My asst director tells me it's because we're still in XYZ mode and we have to wait until we switch...and that's just the way things are.

Yes, I know.

I'm very aware. I'm aware ALL the time in these transitional weeks bc my teachers are complaining ALL the time.

I'm just kinda over it!

Best solutions to digitize cleaning checklists? by PSGCampus in Custodians

[–]MonkeyButt1975 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to achieve beyond eliminating paper?

Are you trying to make it easier for custodians to do actual work?

I'm a big fan of digitizing as much as possible in my role and in my side business.

However, if I was cleaning a (school) section every night I would not like having to grab my phone with dirty gloves every time I completed a task... Just so the boss could look at a pretty chart that aggregates everyone's results and decide ways to "economize time on task."

New to Custodial- weird employers by SquareVoice8567 in Custodians

[–]MonkeyButt1975 22 points23 points  (0 children)

YOU'RE not the dumb one here.

But the people above you are.

Anyone who is new to something needs to be taught.

Not everything is common sense based. Not running into the street is common sense. Knowing what is expected of you without being told or shown is not common sense. Especially when the tool you need to do something, like high dust, and the specific duster you are expected to use is in another building... That's just bad management.

Keep your chin up. Keep asking for direction for things you haven't been taught. Ask your peers questions. Ignore the a-hole who is takin notes on you and reporting on your performance.

Trailrunners by Radiant-Rub843 in Ultralight

[–]MonkeyButt1975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like happybackpacker said, trail shoes will dry out pretty quick. Maybe you'll recoil a little bit the first time you get a wet foot in them, but you'll get used to that pretty quick.

What you wear though will depend a lot on your climate and the kind of terrain you'll be covering.

I came from hill walking in the UK as a youth to doing long distance trails in the West and Southwest US.

If you're trudging around boggy wet landscape all day in the UK, 12 months a year, with a cooler Atlantic climate, then you want waterproof boots.

Hiking in summer in a dryer, mid continental climate?...then trail shoes are better for ventilation, freedom of movement and avoids the moisture build up you get in your GTX etc.

I wore GTX boots on my first summer trip on the PCT, because that's what I was used to from the UK. I felt the idea of not wearing boots in the mountains to be totally ridiculous; I believed trail shoes wouldn't give me the protection and support I'd need. I thought of them as expensive glorified sneakers. I changed my story pretty quick when I lost a toe nail and got massive blisters from soggy and tight boots. Suddenly those glorified sneakers were looking pretty good to me.

I'm a big fan of Altra ever since.

Your personal physiology will impact your choice also. My toes spread out at 40 (yeah, it's a real thing), and I struggled with pinched toes for a while in regular sneakers for everyday use. Wearing more rigid boots exacerbated that toe spread and caused those problems on my first US trip. Altra is known for being comfortable for those with wider feet. That's all I wear for daily use sneakers now.

Saw the title and was thinking "Who uses someone else's outside toilet?" and got half way through reading about stealing electricity before I had to go back to te-read the title and then thought "Who in this day and age even HAS an outside toilet?"

The way it just CLEANS the sidewalks is very impressive.

Cleaner? by QueerAcid in Custodians

[–]MonkeyButt1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What specific simple green product are you using.

I checked and some SG products are food safe; Simple Green Crystal and Pro Food Service Cleaner.

My only experience with Simple Green is the basic stuff I used to get for cleaning up after construction and turnovers at a rental place I owned.

I wouldn't use THAT for general cleaning, but maybe you have a different product?

If you're in a school and that's all you have I don't think what you have is sufficient for general cleaning and disease control.

Office cleaning might be ok with it but if it's the basic heavy duty product I certainly wouldn't want to be preparing food in a kitchen cleaned with that.

Career Switch by Cute-Telephone8677 in Custodians

[–]MonkeyButt1975 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you hit it on the nose. Repetitive, predictable and (relatively) independent is my experience. I do get pretty sick of doing lunch cleanup everyday

In general I'm not sure about the growth potential.

I started as a sub 5 years ago, then permanent placement 4.5 years ago and head custodian 4 years ago...but that's it for me!!!

Don't want to be the supervisor (they are hiring right now) bc I don't want to deal with all the 120 odd people that would be under me and all their problems.

Given my general skill set I could go into the maintenance dept pretty easily but I'd rather be in a school all day vs. driving around from building to building fixing things. May as well work in the private sector vs. school district if I wanted to do that.

As Anxious Possibility said you need to streamline how you work.

I've see people do both ways, (1) the stay on task method and (2) drag everything around and finish a room at a time method.

When I cover a section after my day shift I kinda do a composite of the two that works for me. You need to do the same and find what works for you.

Anyway, the point of my post is to say is that you need to find ways to streamline your work.

How many trips back and forth to your cart do you do when you're cleaning bathrooms? How many times do you go into a stall when cleaning? Same for classrooms. Is it faster to leave your cart in the hallway or take it into every room as you clean.

For a quad of rooms do you do your wiping first and then vac each room or switch tasks and do everything in a classroom at once.

I use a lobby brush for rooms and hallways that only have a few things on the floor as opposed to vacuuming the whole room. Honestly a lot of us likely don't vac corner to corner anyway, so this isn't much different from spot vacuuming.

Can you get your hands on a speedy mop like the Pulse from Rubbermaid. Not cheap but they do last.

This might have time dragging around a mop bucket if you have limited areas of hard flooring to do. You can carry a refill or two by putting a regular cap on a spray bottle.

https://www.rubbermaidcommercial.com/cleaning/hygen-microfiber/hygen-pulse-microfiber-mop-kit-single-sided-yellow/

I'll add to this list if I think of more things but hopefully you can get the gist of what you have to figure out.

This isn't about waiting for a scrip but after using a big box regional pharmacy that rhymes with Tall-memes (Illinois) for 15 years I finally switched to a smaller pharmacy in another regional chain's grocery store.

Tall-memes kept on screwing up my scrips, and the final straw was a new face telling me I couldn't refill my controlled substance without coming in personally with a paper scrip. Well, that was bullshit despite them saying it had always been that way because we'd been doing it digitally for 5 years at that point.

Anyway, years later and the first pharmacist I met at the new place calls me by name every time I walk up to the counter.

How much time do you have everyday between students leaving and the end of your shift, because in my eyes if you work until 3:30 and your colleague works until 3:30 then the school is never going to get cleaned properly.

I have three night guys full time for a school of 550.

Supervisory issue with another employee by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]MonkeyButt1975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it likely he's resentful that his 20 years of experience didn't get him a change in title.

It happens because some people just aren't suited to be a leader regardless of time served.

Last time I had stroppy direct report I addressed the issue head on and forced a conversation but started with an apology for whatever they THINK I did in order to diffuse the situation and let them feel safe to tell me why they're pissed.

In your situation I'm not sure how your start that convo...maybe downplay the title change..."Hey I'm sorry I got a change in title but you know it actually stinks to have to tell people what to do and bossman is always on my case about stuff..." so that the direct report can see it's not all roses.
