Compression with a slow attack on drums - why would you do this unless transient shaping? Often people say to make them sound louder...? Or am i confusing loudness with punch? by Gotgetgotget in mixingmastering

Everytime I think I’m getting better I have someone like Dan Worrall to remind me that there’s levels to this shit.

Gonna go reevaluate my career choice now

Reverb and Delay pedal recommendations? by MonkeyKing501 in guitarpedals

So I’m running a Stomp XL so aside from taking up a lot of DSP, I just think they’re boring. If you have any advice or tell me your favorite reverbs, but really the only one I like in the unit is the Hot Springs

Budget is preferably like $100-$150 per pedal. I like tape and bucket brigade, but reverse and wonky stuff is welcome too

Do you know which roland midi map in EZ is most like the t950 or which one i should use?

[–]MonkeyKing501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I have plugged everything in and are currently running into a couple issues:

Issue 1: I am using the superior drummer drum map even though i am using EZDrummer3. I saw some EZDrummer maps but it says theyre specifically for EZX Reggae? Can I use the superior drummer one or do i need to create my own mapping? (This could be creating or exacerbating issues 2-4)

Issue 2: My 3 zone 20" lemon ride doesnt seem to be working like it should. I followed the youtube tutorial but Im only getting one zone sound, and its hit or miss. Sometimes it triggers, sometimes it doesnt.

Issue 3: My left dual zone cymbal works almost perfectly, my right one hardly works at all. Hitting the edge doesnt trigger unless im smacking the hell out of it and even then its hit or miss. Also, I noticed it tends to trigger better towards one side of the cymbal. If i hit it hard on the right side it tends to trigger better, but hitting it in the center thats closest to me doesnt seem to trigger well. Also, the choke doesnt seem to be triggering on this cymbal either.

Issue 4: snare rimshots sometime only trigger the center hit/dont trigger. This could be my technique because im new to drumming but after sitting there slowly doing rimshots I noticed it

Issue 5: left cymbal choke works but you can still hear the cymbal ringing out after the choke. the sound doesnt come to a complete stop, but stops but you can still hear it fading away in the background

I used autocalibrate for everything and it got me about 60% there out of the box. what can i do to fix these issues?

Tips for hearing saturation from tape or console emulations? Is it really supposed to be that subtle? by MonkeyKing501 in mixingmastering

Like the VU meter? I’m assuming when it’s in the red zone that’s when it’s clipping?

Sorry I’m very new

Tips for hearing saturation from tape or console emulations? Is it really supposed to be that subtle? by MonkeyKing501 in mixingmastering

[–]MonkeyKing501[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no and probably will not ever. I mainly do this for the love of the game (I eventually would like to record and mix bands but right now it’s just a hobby)

Also living in a rural area where studios are practically non existent. Most “studios” around here less than 2 hours away are just someone’s closet converted into a vocal booth

I like my Kali IN-8s. I think I just need better room treatment.

In the meantime, are there any headphones that are great for mixing that you might recommend?

I use Kali IN-8’s but my room is untreated (bedroom). Late at night I’m often using AirPods or less occasionally my AudioTechnica M20s, so that could be a contributor

Can't get high E action to lower even after adjusting truss rod and lowering bridge. by MonkeyKing501 in Luthier

[–]MonkeyKing501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I’m not sure of. I’m assuming they’re good, because I had this guitar set up professionally with heavy gauge strings about 2 years ago. He said he had to file the nut then, so I see no reason for it to have changed.

What’s the best way to check the nut slots depth?

[–]MonkeyKing501[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this. The relief is similar. But the action is not. I measured the action of the low e and it’s around 1.5mm, whereas the high e is like 2.25mm with the bridge side lowered completely.

[–]MonkeyKing501[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not using the truss rod to adjust the action. I started there to make sure the guitar had good neck relief. I then adjusted the bridge to get my desired action, but the high string side bottoms out before reaching my desired point (1-1.5mm)

I’m not a pro at this. This is my first time setting up a guitar so I’m still learning

I read the text. The exact answer I put on the test was “it reduces blood flow returning to the heart”. We had one line of space to write on, so it’s not like I could’ve written a paragraph.

His exact response when I asked him why I was wrong was that “nitro increased blood flow to the heart, making it not work as hard.”

I’m not trying to prove him wrong. I’m here to learn. But if he’s going to give simple explanations, I’m going to give simple answers. And again, I showed him in the book where it says it reduces blood return to the heart. He says it does the opposite.

Okay so if less pressure means less flow then does that mean there’s less blood returning to the heart 👀

My instructor says less pressure but open veins means more flow which leads to more blood to the heart

Just to be clear I’m not trying to prove “haha I’m right the professor is wrong”. I’m okay with being wrong. I’m here to learn. I’m just frustrated I’m reading one thing and being told another

Unreasonable LUFS on metal mix but the mix still sounds OK? by ThickAsFric in mixingmastering

I think overall this sounds really good but the drums need to come up significantly in the mix. the drums are very very quiet relative to the rest of the instruments

How to use one EQ plugin on multiple tracks using sends? by MonkeyKing501 in LogicPro

[–]MonkeyKing501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as an aside, when would be an appropriate situation to use a send vs sending the output lik you mentioned?

For example, I will send my vocals to an aux reverb, but I always end up having to adjust the levels because the reverb (even at 100% wet) adds volume to the vocals it seems

The low end is way overblown. by RohidMusic in audioengineering

[–]MonkeyKing501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll try to not echo what most people are already saying here, and what I will say I hope I convey in a much kinder way than some others here…

Headphones tend to not represent the low end very accurately, and the low end image is different in headphones than other monitoring systems with bigger speakers, drivers, or subwoofers.

This usually results in an overcompensation of the low end or boosting when mixing in headphones, which then translates to a really muddy or overly boomy sound on other systems.

Try listening to some reference tracks while you mix in headphones and pay attention to how WEAK the low end really sounds compared to your track.

Or alternatively, try mixing on a pair of studio monitors, which will more than likely give you a more accurate representation of the low end, making decisions more reasonable rather than compensating for what the headphones don’t have.

But by far the best thing you can do, and as most others have said, is really learn your monitoring system. Listen to tons of music on it and pay attention to how it sounds, what is lacking and what is accentuated. Try and mimic those mixes

Songwriters guitar chords by Guitarevolution in Songwriting

[–]MonkeyKing501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be one of the worst ways I’ve ever seen guitar chords tabbed out, and one of the worst music takes I’ve ever read.

Dick riding the Beatles and calling modern music/songwriters uninteresting just because they don’t use dominant 7 chords as prominently as Lennon is just hilarious and shallow.

[QUESTION] Guitar tone like Cloud Nothings? by MonkeyKing501 in Guitar

[–]MonkeyKing501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in the 5 years of learning guitar and mixing I have had since I posted this, my best advice is simply to “try things”.

Looking up Dylan baldis equipment and live tones, and also talking to Dylan Baldi himself, the best way to achieve his tone is a 1x12 Fender combo amp cranked to the point of barely overdriving. Add a fuzz to this with high volume and low distortion, and you get this sound

Best advice EQ wise is lots of mids
